From: Brenda Connolly A better analogy may be having that steak in a Posh Restaurant or a Greasy Spoon Diner. I may have a better experience in the nice place, especially if someone else is paying, but if the steak isn't any good, then I won't be coming back. Style vs Substance. Some of the best meals of my life were in out of the way, greasy truck stop dives where big-haired waitress's named Hazel or Velma called me "Sweetie", told me to call my mother, and never let me see the bottom of my coffee cup. If LL could even walk up close to that kind of substance it would be a start.

http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2008/04/moment-of-truth.html :- "There was a time when code submissions were readily accepted, then they were more and more cherry picked and these days, as far as I can tell, they are ignored at large, even if they are addressing the most basic and obvious problems like crashes (and I am not at all speaking of GUI changes)." Control freakiness has taken over in LL. I see this feedback from a talented and generous contributor I see the policy decision to cripple services rather than limit logins to a level that can be supported by the current infrastructure. I see muppets. They're everywhere.

From: Virrginia Tombola I see no reason why I shouldn't have been allowed to attempt to use the older client, at least. A simple warning (such as I used to get) that I was using the outdated client would have sufficed.
The reason is that the SL protocol changes over time, as LL adds new features to Second Life and makes improvements in the network code. In the Olden Daisies before the het-grid, all viewer updates were mandatory; they didn't maintain any support for old versions of the protocol at all. Now the server code looks at the version number of your viewer and (if necessary) makes adjustments in the way it talks to your viewer accordingly. Maintaining support for older viewers is a drain of development resources, and LL doesn't want to have to support that old code forever. What probably happened is that the 1.20 server code dropped support of the protocols used by viewers older than 1.18.5 (or perhaps 1.18.2), so your Old School viewer (based on 1.18.0) doesn't work. I would guess that 1.18.5-based viewers probably have another two or three months to live; after that it will be 1.19 or later, which means that all Nicholaz viewers will be useless unless he can be enticed to come back and do a new one.

Mmmmm, I don't think any enticing will be possible after reading his blog post. Frankly I'm amazed he lasted as long as he did given the lack of support, kudos, or even a simple thank you from LL. I hope he knows how much many of us appreciated his contribution.
I for one will use his viewer until I just can't anymore. After that I guess I'll just step quietly into the queue with the rest of the drones, doomed to finally submit to the unyielding will of the Release Viewer Deity and hope for mercy.
*sigh* Dang. I'm cranky today.

*sigh* Dang. I'm cranky today. They did give him kudos last year, when they actually paid attention to open source contributions. He was the Contributor of the Year. And I'm with you on holding on to BE-v. It's way too stable to give that up.

Yeah, you have to have BE-v in a 1.18.5.3 client for it to work.
I had been using EC-b actually until the web login got killed, then used BE-v until this. I since grabbed Boy Lane's Windows Cool Viewer, since it still has Nicholaz patches in it and the old UI. While it seems there's a slow memory leak somewhere, it's at least decently usable, and I still have BE-v in a seperate directory if I need it.
