I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! All the pictures that come up on the main web site are corny as hell! People hugging in front of a space house, people cuddling by a sunset, two chicks shopping for generic shoes in bad dresses. ENOUGH! Who does a honkey have to get in touch with to ask for some non-fruity pics on the front page? I'm too embarrassed to refer any friends to the page because of this!! On the other hand it's a good way to keep people from getting in trouble at work! SL isn't just shopping and finding an internet girlfriend! It's building your own stuff and making your own games be it a first person shooter or RP or WHATEVER! Why can't you show that as well?! If anyone has an email address to whoever I should talk to about this that can actually do anything I'd really appreciate it.

From: SqueezeOne Pow SL isn't just shopping and finding an internet girlfriend! It's building your own stuff and making your own games be it a first person shooter or RP or WHATEVER! Why can't you show that as well?! I would suspect you would write to support, or open a support ticket. A JIRA would probasbly be worth doing, as well as hitting the office hours of Lindens involved with the website. I don't think you would get much change, however; I believe the goal *is* about shopping and finding an internet girlfriend. At least that is the sort of things I s'pect "non pioneers" might want. Or at least what someone thinks "non pioneers" want. I personally agree with you, and would prefer more options be shown -- or at least simply more rotating images. Oh, and just cuz, here's my idea of a fruity piccie: Mari

From: SqueezeOne Pow SL isn't just shopping and finding an internet girlfriend! . /me blinks. It's not? Seriously, I think the pics are suposed to be of random, middle of the road type people doing generic things 80% of the population does at one point in time or another. This way, someone new to SL can achieve that look or better in just a couple of days and feel like they have acomplished something. I don't mean for that to sound cold or jaded, it's just an early goal for new players; look as good as the website screenshots. This may not be what one would consider their final look but it beats the hell out of the OI newbie look.

I think they should have an avatar with her hand extended, those little dots blinking from it, and a plywood box with the placement arrows on it a few meters away on the ground. Boy, that will get them coming into SL in droves.

I think they are going with the safe images because they want to attract a more mainstream audience and those images do show things that you don't normally see in most MMOs.

I believe that clasically the front page pictures have always been posed by Lindens. At one stage they weren't - they were submitted by residents - but this led to a lot of complaints about favouritism and the effect this was having on resident businesses. That's the reason for the generic malls and dresses shown - to avoid advertising any specific person's products.
However, I think the main reason for the pictures being as they are is that they're intended to "sell" Second Life, and thus things on Second Life which make money for LL. Shopping makes money for LL because of Currency Linden and the LindeX commission, plus the high probability that a resident L$ seller will use their income to pay tier. Having a house, etc, makes money for LL because they'll pay for land.
It might seem odd but the builders and creators of SL have always been a minority compared to the rest of the userbase. Plus, of course, a person doing their own building may well be very limited in what they can achieve, which they don't really want to show!

It's hard to illustrate someone building and creating in a picture. They pretty much are just standing there with some prims floating in front of them, or they are in that awkward "edit appearance" mode. It's fun to watch someone who's good at it, but that's because you can see them manipulating prims, etc.
Yumi - it's not surprising. It's great for buildiers, though! They should want as many people as possible in SL who just want to shop and socialize. That's the customer base!
At any rate, I think the pictures could be much better. A few of them are ok, but the poses and camera angles are sloppy and the avatars themselves could look better. I don't care what avatars look like in general, but for the models who are representing the parent company, they should be much better.

Then the newbie steps off orientation island with their expectations of a safe, comfortable experience and finds a world full of sex beds, adfarms and screaming LOLCubes. I'm starting to like the pictures on the web page.

Instead, you can send them to http://www.secondlifegrid.net/ and they could click on the JOIN button that goes to a non-fruity page on secondlife.com. It seems http://www.secondlifegrid.net/ also rotates their main pic as well, but there's less fruit, more filling.

One thign I do note about these front page images: All average looking adult humans, no?
Not that I expect to see kid avvies playing on the main page (wouldn't that be someting!), but it does surprise me to not see some greater variance of SL form. A furry would be nice, but even showing people from Caledon, or elves, or heck, just something different from the "go and be suburban people" look.

Picture taken. Posted. Heil Hitler salute on front page. That'll draw them in.

Yeah yeah....I'd like to see some of the more creative elements of SL integrated in those pics. To me they seem to undercut how amazing it really is. They are too bland. (is this a friday thread, cause it seems like a topic we could really run with on a friday.) Maybe we should post images that we'd like to see on the web page.....not litarally, but the 'types' of things. After all...we do represent the public masses that have been drawn to SL in the first place. For me....it was a brief blurb in Playboy that caught my interest. But an image of some amazing build would absolutely have drawn me to SL.

Pictures of really amazing builds don't even need avatars in them. There are some amazing places in SL. Not that Paper Couture isn't amazing - please don't lynch me, ladies. But maybe show some of the really stunning work that some people have done rather than a bunch of average looking avatars looking at shoes (althought the upskirt angle on the one shopping pic always makes me laugh.)

Given that they're now touting this as a more social networking engine, I think we'll only be seeing more of these kinds of pictures.
But it's better than the Rambo-esque style of pictures that could be on the main page. Do we really want to encourage the griefers?

I don't think I've ever been to Paper Couture. If I have....I have no clue....I shop only when I want something specific.....I can't stand browsing (IRL either, I have to have a mission, get in, get stuff, get out LOL)

How about some pics of Xcite products?? Or Prim Babies? or Yiffing? Ok, seriously, maybe something like the movie tie-ins or various companies seen in SL? What about different areas like Japanese gardens, or Amusement Parks?

It amuses me that the picture on the log-in screen is always of land and trees. Never a person, a building or anything - very odd.
Anyway - I propose a weekly or monthly competition for that front-page of the website!
Each week or month, hopefull photographers submit their picture of something that sums up SL for them. It has to be PG (of course) and not a blatant advert for someone (no store names on show etc). They include the names of the 'participants' and here it was taken (SLURL).
The Lindens draw one (or more) out each week/month and it is the picture - complete with the names of the participants and the photographer. You could also get a small prize (how about a sl necklace or something?) and a big of glory!
Good for moral, fun to take part in and provides the Lindens with cool pictures to entice new residents.

I've had a black screen for a log-in screen for several weeks now. Before that it woud show the landscape at different times of the day, depending on what the time was inside SL.

There should be a picture of a naked girl tied to a bed being done by a horse. If you want to be honest about things.
OK, I kid. It doesn't happen that often. One hardly ever comes home to see two complete strangers doing that. Hardly ever.
