...I will let the winners know through a forum PM!

The survey is now closed. Thanks to everyone who took part!

I have sent each of the three winners of the TYL a friend invite in-world with the message "I'm the guy from the survey", so if you got one of those you just need to add me and I'll send you the prize.

I'll probably check a few times untill the last time next sunday, so you should add me ASAP if you got one.

Thanks again to anyone that took part!

Taylor- Just to explain what I meant before:

I really -needed- 10 more replies, that doesn't mean the survey will be especially good or statisticly significant as soon as I get them, it's just that I really can't do much with <30 responses (or so I've been told)

Mickey- First of all I'm glad you took the time to fill out my survey. Thanks!

To address your worries, while I did spend some time in SL, exploring, snagging Freebies and whatnot, you are right insofar as that I never stumbled upon any real world company operating a succesful business selling in-world goods.

On the other hand, I have heard that a minority of companies have had in-world stores in the past where they actually sold stuff (adidas sold shoes, american apparel sold clothes).

Alas, they have all closed their gates in search of luck elsewhere, but I was wondering if any of the local bitter codgers from around here had, at some point, had contact with any of these mythical stores. : )

Most RL companies fail horribly because they don't "get it". I have never seen an av older than about 3 weeks wearing RL branded goods. As far as I can tell, they tend to operate under the "Build It And They Will Come" myth - they don't bother updating content very often or doing anything else that would encourage potential customers to hang around or return (like, say, having staff on hand to chat). In that sense, it bears marked similarities to the internet in the 90's: everybody wanted a website but they didn't know what to do with it.

RL comanies also run into problems because while they can see there are people here, they have no idea where we are from, how old we are, what our income is, etc. etc.

Oh, and then there's all the salacious press coverage we get from time to time - that scares them off a bit.

Added to which, we have in SL loads of really marvellous NATIVE brands who thoroughly understand the market here. They make stuff which works well in SL because they have been residents for a good long while. RL brands really struggle to compete with that. They should treat it as a newly discovered country with a fully developed culture of its own if they want to succeed (tho personally, I'd be happier if they just buggered off).

Good luck!

p.s. have a trawl through the videos on the metanomics site for some good in-depth background. (google it - can't be bothered to look for the link)

p.p.s. I didn't do your survey, sorry.

random prizes for participation do not constitute gambling. they don't even constitute a raffle.

time is not considered legal tender.
