Hey everyone,

I am a student of economics and computer science at the University of Göttingen, Germany and I am writing my bachelor thesis on "The Influence of Virtual Worlds on Business Models: The Case of Second Life".

I am conducting a survey to find out how people interact with businesses in SL and if it has any influence on business models.

You would be providing me with valueable insights regarding Second Life, and I am offering a thank-you-lottery to anyone that completes the survey with 1x L$5,000 and 2x L$2,500.

The survey only takes 5-10 minutes and is all-in-all pretty simple.

The link to the survey is:
http://www.eSurveysPro.com/Survey.aspx?id=4c412154-da89-43ed-b197-6161a942d141

I would greatly appreciate if you spread the word to anyone interested, because it will only be running for a maximum of 2 weeks and the quality of my paper will depend on the number of respondents I get.

Thanks alot!
Max

It's not as short as the survey I did a few days ago.

I think if you aren't betting anything, it can't be gambling. It's just a little thank you for helping me : )

Ah, I thought it would be 5-10 minutes as I only needed 2-3 minutes on a test run (but I probably flew over alot, as I knew the questions). Feel free to correct me if it is longer.

yeah but you are giving something to be in the "draw" so I dunno

gambling is a thin line... *shrug*

doesn't matter to me anyway, not gonna do the survey (and I am guessing many others won't either)

TOS applies to SL - not to external websites.

yeah but the lottery is within SL as in the winner gets paid in lindens

if that were the case all these old casino owners would set up slots via websites... wonder how well that would go over...
(i am sure it could be done)

It seems that survey was designed to favour your bias toward a positive outcome.

I insist on a recount, with appropriate controls. And pie.

I almost filled it out, but I've no trust in contests.

I decided I had better ways to spend those minutes.

24 up untill now. So anyone taking part has >10% chance of winning!! >;(^._.^)<

But seriously, I still need about 10 more replies pretty bad, if you know anyone that wants a chance at some easy $L, shoot him a message.

The survey will probably end in the next 3-4 days.

I wonder if professors are getting bored reading all these unimaginative papers all these survey kids are writing? This person says he is only needs 35 responses to his survey to write his paper? I didn't take statistics at university, but that sounds like a pretty small sample to me, considering all those bots that are now in world at any given moment.

MaxSimon -

You wrote a very nice explanation...were gracious in your request....even threw in a sweet little marketing tool for it....and it appears your spelling and grammar has passed the test of our local bitter old codger who would rip you to shreds.....even assuming that English is not your native language.....that alone is a feat in itself, especially when making a survey request. Do you use the word codger over there in Germany? If not....I can explain. It's a term often used in the South in the US.

I took your survey just to see what the subject was.

I like to know that the person doing their thesis has actually put some effort into tooling around SL and immersing themselves just a bit....to get the feel for it.....before they compile the survey. Rarely the case. I remember thesis writing....and it was far more involved than plugging a survey into the Internet.

I do a lot of shopping in SL....I don't know of any corporate owned or RL companies that offer products. I know many have a presence here....but the ones I've come into contact with, were here for name recognition alone....no products. I did come into contact with one....and they were rather rude to me....but don't' remember them offering actual product. The other one I came into contact with were not selling product... it was a nonprofit doing fundraising.....experience with them is always topnotch.

There wasn't an option for saying that I have not had contact with companies offering product. And that info alone, would be something someone needs to know before compiling a survey. And it's not like I don't get around.

Did you look around and find these actual companies? Who are they? The fact that someone who has been here for over 2 years has never made contact with one.....is sort of important in your observations.....don't you think?

Taylor- Just to explain what I meant before:

I really -needed- 10 more replies, that doesn't mean the survey will be especially good or statisticly significant as soon as I get them, it's just that I really can't do much with <30 responses (or so I've been told)

Mickey- First of all I'm glad you took the time to fill out my survey. Thanks!

To address your worries, while I did spend some time in SL, exploring, snagging Freebies and whatnot, you are right insofar as that I never stumbled upon any real world company operating a succesful business selling in-world goods.

On the other hand, I have heard that a minority of companies have had in-world stores in the past where they actually sold stuff (adidas sold shoes, american apparel sold clothes).

Alas, they have all closed their gates in search of luck elsewhere, but I was wondering if any of the local bitter codgers from around here had, at some point, had contact with any of these mythical stores. : )

But MaxSimon....point is....my answers won't mean anything....because your survey asks questions based on the fact that I have actually purchased product.....which I haven't....so null and void on mine.

There's your survey and thesis right there.

There is only one bitter codger....and he doesn't have time to shop.....null and void....on a variety of levels.

I have gotten 29 full responses up untill now and will be closing the survey very soon. Anyone that still wants to take part should do so now.

To everyone that has already taken part, thanks a ton! I will let the winners know through a forum PM!
