Or lose all perspective.

A lot of people do that when they first start chatting on the internet.

Marriages get ruined, stalkers and weirdos get met, etc -

because people are unable to get a perspective on how socializing on the internet should be related to their RL.

I kinda skipped a lot of the normal newbie steps - i think.
I got adopted by the hangout and have been a part of the place ever since my second month...I seem to have become a fixture and fitting of the place lol.

In addition to Brann's point, there is a stage where something forces you to step back from SL and realise that you do have an addiction....I am going throught that this week...

/me goes and sits in a corner, rocking back and forth, mumbling to herself....

Have you ever taken one of those "Are You Addicted" tests? Not just SL, either. Everquest and world of Warcraft all have these.

Do you feel you are spending too much time in game?
Do you feel guilty about how much time you spend?
Do you wish you could spend more time whith your family?
Do you try to hide how much time you spend in game?

The trick to breaking the addiction is to quite feeling guilty.
Worked for me :)

The final stage is posting on forums, not even being inworld, and coming off as superior-sounding as possible... grin

Don't those people make you sick? Never become one...

Oh, wait. Doh!

It's all just a cycle isn't it!

Its a whirlwind - suddenly you are more popular than you ever were!

You have so MANY friends now and they all want to devote time to you and are happy when you log on , etc ,etc.

And those you love online somehow understand you better (probably because you've spent 5 hours a day communicating with them for a month - something you never did with your RL partner ... )

I'm jaded to it all now, I had my long moment of lost perspective in the 90's But I think it happens to most people.

In the beginning.

Think a lot of people go out of their way to be friendly to new people.

Blingtard: Aren't I glorious in my glitter and high fashion? I spent over $15k L on hair, skins, shoes, clothes, bling and accessories for this avatar.

Homesteader: I have a McMansion that spans half a sim. Come sit on my 200 prim couch.

Builder: I can't believe people build 200 prim couches. What idiots.

Non-human avatar: Dear Gods! I look just like every other avatar in SL. I need to do something creative.

Anti-shopper: I no longer care. I refuse to wear shoes or change my clothes more often than once every 6 months.

Flying Spaghetti Monster: wax on...wax off.

I've been hitting "Non-human avatar" more and more frequently, LOL. I'm still working through "Builder."

LOL there was no grid when I went through that phase.

Just chat rooms and the only Instant messenger program was ICQ.

And then one morning, you weep because you can't get 5 uninterrupted minutes alone...

Yeah .. LOL

I wonder how often that happens.

People carry over Online to RL because they "have so much in common" and "we spend all of our time together" only to realize after a few months that person is excessive clingy and needy.

Or just ... wierd in a way you never could have known by how you interact with them online. I mean lacking basically the entire context of someone's life and then assuming that you can drag that person into your own life successfully seems like a tall order to me under the best of circumstances. I know that it has worked for some people, but it just seems very tricky to me at the very best.

1. Hi, I'm new!
2. Oooh, everything is shiny and cheap!
3. Buy everything.
4. Buy land.
5. Oooh, land is not cheap!
6. Start building.
7. Start selling.
8. Hey, now I'm earning that money!
9. Oooh, everything is expensive!
10. Stop buying.
