What's in a Name? or, the story of Alt...

I have alts I have created for the purpose of having a good creative name, I won't deny it. I do log on as them too. I don't have a single name in SL that doesn't serve some actual purpose. One of them I use to work undisturbed, and the name pretty much says that I should be left alone, I don't want to talk to you. Based on the limited # of group membership slots we have, and my quite varied interests in different activities, I also pretty much have accounts segregated by the types of activities I participate in with them. For example you won't see my fishing alt joining any educational groups, he's not here to learn, he's just here to fish. Yngwie is primarily a general-purpose avatar and can't stay focused on anything.

I didn't have an alt until I realized that's how to have more than 25 groups, an alt can be in the ones you just want notices from!

Then later for my own groups... So I wanted the same initials and to be recognizable in case my regular account couldn't log in for any reason.

Now I test things too, but active? /me shakes her head... Not at all, I have yet to IM or chat with anyone from my alt, and don't need to log in but maybe once every few months?

I have only this one see no need for an Alt in all the time i have been in SL. As for the name I wanted my lastname to be wombat but this was as close as i could get

I missed a chance to have my RL name. It was available at the time; but I wasn't sure how I'd feel having strangers say it or also of legal ramifications should I begin in-world business(es) some day.

Still am not, so just as well.

It was too much trouble to get my last silly named alt revived.

If my RL name ever came up, I'd grab it just to have it, and just park the av. Better than having some idiot out there taking it and getting my real life self a bad reputation on the internetz! I don't have a common name, so hopefully it wouldn't come up in the list, but I've seen some pretty strange ones, so it just might!

Currently, I have a variety of Puppets. I should have given them each a different first initial, for the lucky chairs, but I opted for an army of Puppets instead.

This is my RL name.

I am the Alt, created to go a different way in SL than the Main. In a short amount of time though, I took over and the original account seldom logs in anymore. I now use that account to test things and to be the second person in my land group and to be a member of groups that I want notices on.

I do also have a male alt, originally created on a dare to see if I could RP a guy - now I only use him to help adjust pose balls. I have a few other accounts because I wanted the names - one of which has not even left the orientation area.

No alts here. One of me is enough.

Oh man, do I have alts.

99% of the time I'm Carl Metropolitan. But I've also got "Carl Henderson", which I just had to get because that's my RL name. I use him to chill out--he's the cutest little Victorian bunny rabbit, too--or occasionally model for me.

I've got the following alts linked to my account for NCI:

NCI Golem -- Master accounting/land holding alt for NCI
NCI Badger -- NCI Education Department accounting alt
NCI Titanium -- NCI AdNode accounting/payment alt
NCI Alter -- NCI FreebieNode server owner alt
NCI Princess -- NCI event posting alt #1

NCI Acronym -- NCI event posting alt #3

Why so many?
1) to limit access to the NCI funds, and to avoid co-mingling of NCI funds with the personal funds of people who handle L$ for us.
2) to allow the same jobs to change owners without lots of stuff needing to be moved from one account to another,
3) to allow NCI to centrally post all our events. Currently, each account is limited to 5/day--but NCI sometimes has as many as 12 or 13 classes or events a day, and
4) NCI Golem owns all our groups/land/money so I can someday pass on the responsiblity as NCI Executive Director--and NCI Golem--to someone else. Additionally, one person on the NCI Board of Directors has the NCI Golem password, so if something should happen to me, NCI does not grind to a halt, or even be forced to cease operation.

Finally, I have a handful of alts that I'd used in the past for QA testing on NCI--mystery newbies--that would go around to various NCI locations. These were effectively abandoned after a week.

That's a lot of alts, but on the other hand, I don't have a Real Life, so I'm entitled

Ok I have Cash she holds well my cash she is the banker. And dang she dont like to give up the money!

I have Katrina she is my perm checker and well holds my stuff that I build as a hopeful backup.

and then I have another that i just use to explore.

None of them have any friends so to speak. So I dont have the probs of intermingling friends.

And then I have me that is what you all see lol. Hope she is fun most times

I wish I had, now. I didn't realise you could have more than one acct. I took the "make sure of your name it is yours for all tiiiime" part of the old sign-in, too seriously I guess?

I should've done what you describe above, if nothing else. I'd have had an option later to use it for real, but oh well. Someone else has it now. And of course, SL last names are limited ed. like a Criterion dvd.

I guess I'm the boring one here. No alts.

But I AM an older av.

Some of these posts do point out the benefits of alts though.

I might just have to create a female one.

Then I got a few more so I could create a group mind character... a single alien critter in multiple bodies.

Then I discovered that having more than two alts logged on the same sim from the same computer makes all but two disconnect. There's probably things I can do to fix that, but it's just too much like work.

Try using different viewers.

Like two in the LL viewer, and two with Kirsten's viewer.

Oh, I'm sure the real solution is using different ports. It's not that I can't do it, it's that it's more hassle than I feel like getting into.

The worst part in getting it working is your alts will start badgering you to buy a quad core CPU because their frame rate sucks.

Well i am an alt ,and I want my creator to make my boobs smaller.They stick out like a saw..........well boob.
He say's it's so I can try his crappy stuff on,to see if it fits girls. IMHO no girl would be seen dead in tweed.

Is that a new feature? I've had 3 logged in at once, a number of times, working on animations, poses, or multi-party scripts. Not recently, though -- SL got to the point where I didn't have enough memory to handle 3, and haven't tried 3 since I got my new computer. Last time I did that was probably client version 18.

Weird. This does not happen to me. I have put 7 alts in the same sim to test performance without any of them being disconnected.
