The only way to truly hide an av that I've seen is the way that they're telling you...use a crusher script, and an invisiprim, and tuck the result under ground. Your nametag still shows, though.
The first time I ran into this was when I met a plant at Waterhead. He was hanging out in the landscaping...you'd never have noticed that an avatar was there except for the nametag. We had a nice, but quite surreal, conversation.
By the way, the only reason I posted was because of the OP's name. It's the first time I've seen any other Recreant besides our Trout.
Hey, Trout! You gots relatives!

Actually, an invisiprim script does nothing more than load a special (cloud like) texture which behaves differently than 'normal' SL textures. (I'm not sure what it has been used for by LL in the past, i think it was the 'gray cloud' texture used for objects still rezzing.) To make it invisible, it's scaled in such a way that one of the transparant pieces of the texture is magnified to completely cover the whole side/object. The reason we use a script to set the texture, instead of simply dragging the texture on the object is because nobody has the actual texture in his/her inventory. I have no idea what would happen to an avie if this specific texture is used as skin, as it's not available as inventory item. (At least to my knowledge, it should be theoretically possible to create a db entry which refers to this asset by using some libsl tricks, but i've never investigated it.)

From: Agnos Recreant Can I apply a fully transparent texture to my avatar (or 'skin' object or whatever) so that it becomes completely invisible?
(I want to use a non-humanoid avatar, so I first have to hide that horrible primate body LL's decided to trap us all in. "Your world. Your imagination." My ass.) No can do... See thread: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/14450-like-what-makes-me-so.html
