Skin/texture for invisibility.

Can I apply a fully transparent texture to my avatar (or 'skin' object or whatever) so that it becomes completely invisible?

(I want to use a non-humanoid avatar, so I first have to hide that horrible primate body LL's decided to trap us all in. "Your world. Your imagination." My ass.)

You have to use prims with the invisiprim script.

Newp, you have to hide the av with invisiprims and probably an AO that scrunches it into a little ball. Bonus points if the av gets stuffed underground where no one will see the telltale distortion from the invisiprims.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Is this your special way of saying 'no' (the sad, but direct answer to my question)? :)

I'm already using "invisiprims", but the trouble is they don't get rendered for people using too small a rendering distance and they can frakkin' see me in there (I've been caught in a screenshot recently, so I know for sure this can happen). That's why I thought maybe if my very skin had been invisible this would've never happened. (I so hate that humanoid thing they stuck me with. Grr.)

:D You've gotta be kidding. I never walk, I'm up in the air all the time, that sort of thing wouldn't help one bit. (But thanks for trying.)

So what's that "AO" thing you mentioned and how do I get one? (So far I've only edited my appearance to make the avatar as short as possible. I didn't know I could "scrunch it into a little ball", that would be great. And I wouldn't need 4 different invisiprims to hide all the bodyparts like I do now. :P)

Say what now? So it's a SCRIPT making those prims invisible? Here, I thought it was just a fully transparent texture... that's what gave me the idea of applying one to my avatar in the first place.

If you apply a fully transparent texture to your avatar as a skin, what happens is you see right through it (it's transparent after all) to see the default Linden avatar skin beneath it.

AO is short for animation overrider, which is the same device people use to change the default walk, sit, etc, to something less hokey. In this case, you'd want to make your av as small as possible in all dimensions - not just height - and then use an animation which folds the av in on itself in the AO. I have no idea where you would get the animation, I just know how it works from looking at the Tiny avs I have in inventory.

If your desired av wasn't super tiny, and you had the proper AO, you probably wouldn't need to put it in an external box. These, for example, are about knee high on a standard avatar and use few, if any, invisiprims:

... which is exactly what I'd be trying to replace, as I clearly said (by describing the ultimate effect I wanted).

Ouch. If I understand you correctly, that would look even weirder if someone caught me without my invisiprims. First I thought I could make myself into a literal, geometrically-perfect 'ball', not just have my humanoid avatar curled up in the foetal position. :)

So there's no solution for what I want to do. Damn.

Look in your inventory's Library folder, under Clothing. Inside the "Cardboard BoxBot by Grendel's Children" folder there is something approaching what you want. It's called "tiny-zig Body Crusher BASIC1.71(S)" and it will crush your body down. Whether it will be into the exact shape you want, I don't know. Worth a try, though?

Something like that must be possible, though, because I've seen small avatars that look like floating eyeballs. So there must be a place that sells the kind of AO you want.

The new ruth avatar in latest RC viewer is completely invisible except for the fact that it gives off particles. If you turn off particles you can't see it at all. I wonder if there's a way to make yourself invisible that way.

If I am not mistaken, rendering your avatar invisible is against TOS. But............I have been wrong before.

I've come across something called a "body crusher" before and that did what Ann Launay was talking about: it just sank my avatar into the ground to make it look shorter. No good for me. I'm floating in the air all the time.

Hmm... maybe someone knows how the invisiprim script works and they've just applied it to their body? Man, am I in serious need of learning how to script...

Well, I'm only trying to get it out of the way so I can put something totally different in its (visual) place. It's not like I want to be floating around SL as a disembodied 'spirit'. :D

prims with the invisiprim script
Hmm... I've looked at that invisiprim thing again, but I don't see any script in it. It just has a weird texture that shows as fading from white to grey, from left to right (in the menu at least), and if I replace this texture the prim loses its 'hiding' properties. That's why I assumed there was something special about that texture.

I've checked out those body crusher things again: it seems the one I had actually didn't sink my body into the ground, but "packed it up" by bending the legs back into the torso and bending the arms into themselves at the elbow, so that the palms enter the shoulders. What made me think it was just moving my body downwards but leaving it intact was that the minute I lift off the body "unpacks" even though I'm still wearing the crusher object. The other crusher, however, the one Skell Dagger suggested, continues to work even after I lift off, so I can use that to look like a floating torso with a head and arm stumps even while I'm flying. :) It's not so bad, really, it's like I'm an ancient statue. :p And at least it'll allow me to downsize my invisiprim and make everything else around it look better.
Thanks, Skell!

The invisiprim script re-orders the way the viewer draws what is on the screen. You cannot make a truly invisible prim without it. You can delete a script from a prim, and the properties of the prim will remain. So if you had a true invisiprim but with no script, chances are the script was deleted to reduce lag.

Piece of cake! All you need to do is build your avatar into a custom viewer and convince everyone to run it.

Ah, OK, I didn't know that.

don't really wanna look into the TOS to check, but i'm pretty sure it's not, cause your green dot is always there, as well as your name floating above your head, so you can't really be completely invisble.

also, if you're using invisprims, all someone has to do is zoom into you and look "inside" the prim to see you

Becoming this cloud depends entirely on your hair texture being d2114404-dd59-4a4d-8e6c-49359e91bbf0, the texture on the Ruth hair. Drop me an IM if you'd like a copy of a hair with this texture on it :D

Er, no.

It's what you do while that's invisible that's the problem, not the invisibility itself.

That's not the point. It's about getting rid of the humanoid body in order to _replace_ it, not just to stay invisible.

no they cannot... at least i've never seen that happen unless it glitches.
from \some\ angles an invisiprim might make the name tag invisible but if you pan around the avatar it comes into view again.

i think it's actually obscuring your 'hover name' thing that's against the TOS
