i dont camp, and have no camping in my mall, i too hate to filter locations on false traffic.

In the 1st months i came to SL i was not prepared to dedicate any money to it, so at nights (*and while also downloading) i would use to have 2/3 clients camp, with this money i bought clothes , used it for uploads etc.. , even when i received the L$300 stipend

In my mall i have encounterd many starters who do the same, often even camp to pay their 1st weeks of rent. But it seems the general feeling on the forum is that most campers only camp to convert L$ to US$.

curiosity killed the cat, so there you go, a poll

Yes, I camped when I was a n00b. I admit it freely. Even though I had purchased about 5kL$ when I started, I used to sit my AV at camping chairs while I washed dishes and such. Also met and got to know my oldest SL friend while we sat and camped and chatted with each other. :)

Do I camp now? Nope, have other things to do. Am I against camping in general? Eh, sort of, since it seems that camping has mostly been taken over by bots. :( Not a lot of conversation there it seems...

I camped for the first three months, mainly while i was reading up on SL talking to fellow campers, what they did here, what i could do here, I probably made about L$4,000, I remember always being narked that a woman who join the same time as me was making that an hour with pixel sex. All my 'earnings' went back into SL, my first overcoat at O&E L$175, my first hair at Cake and my first set of skins by Max, a lot went into gambling, I probably lost more than i won, though I did once win L$800 on a lucky chair.

Then I discovered I could buy Lindens, so thats what I did after that. I have meet a couple of other players who it took a while to realise Lindens could be bought too.

I tried a camping chair my first week, found it to be a boring waste of time.

Same here because I didn't go premium until a month or two after I joined SL.

camped for 5 minutes as every nub was doing it back then
saw a bright light coming from the sky like a creditcard company had back then and decided to skip a couple years of my teen years, grow up and have enough money to do what i wanted directly

3 weeks later i held 1/4th of a region :p

I don't think anyone on the forums thinks this. The main objections to camping appear to be false traffic figures and camping bots, who don't put anything back into the economy.

I actually used camping to raise the funds to rent my first shop-space, mostly as a test to see if it could be done. Took a lot of patience (I kept a book on my desk and read or watched my iPod during) but it sorta kinda worked, as a getting started method for curiosity's sake, leastways.

Never camped. Wouldn't have the patience for it anyway.

I did once, sometime in my first month I got on a dance pad that was something like 2L for every 10 minutes....I got on it and then after about 15 minutes I got off and it didn't pay me anything. Never did it again. I remember I had purchased all the L from the Lindex that I was allowed to as a noob, had spent it and wanted more money, so I thought I'd try it. That was before I knew about SLX, I think I ended up buying a 6k package of L on ebay that night after camping failed. Thank goodness nothing bad came of the ebay purchase, I didn't even know it was risky at the time...but it was shortly after that I learned about SLX and became a premium member so I never had money problems again.

It was the opposite for me. Figured out how to buy $L on the 1st day, I think. It was a while before I understood about camping. I TP'd aboard a boat that sold pets, and I asked someone who was kneeling and scrubbing,
"What are you doing?".
I'm usually pretty shy, I don't talk to people unless they say something first, but the curiosity was killing me. He whispered,
((I'm camping, Isabeau)), as if that explained everything.
"You're camping? On a boat?"
((They pay me to be here.))
"Oh, Okay."
I felt bad, like I was too rich for my own good. Here I was shopping for a 'pet' while this guy was on his knees scrubbing, just to get by.

I've never camped. For some reason, it just looks sad to me. I don't mean this in a sarcastic way, just in a visual way. If it gives newbies a place to make friends and a little cash, then that's great! :)

Like others, I camped when I started while I read up on SL stuff. It was also at a time when real people were camping instead of bots so I actually made some nice friends while doing so.

But, as others have stated, I quickly became bored with it and decided that I could just spend $5 or $10 on Lindens and be done with it.

Your poll doesn't have a choice for my camping adventure. After a lot of time exploring (just buying lindens as needed), I discovered alts, and made a couple.

One day I began to wonder why campers do what they do ... so I decided to have my alts earn their keep. I joined camping groups, found a couple of camping web sites. Actually, I found some new stores that had cool stuff - like Lost Dog - and some interesting sims, while camping. I was surprised to find that my 2 alts not only made their own spending money, they also paid my little rent. I'm in the US, so the nightly electricity for a laptop cost basically nothing. The computer I used during the days/evenings was on all the time anyway.

Then camping bots arrived. AIEE! The best camping spots began to disappear. Average L$/minute payout went down. Campers no longer talked much. Sometimes you could report obvioius bots to the camping owner, and they would kick them. I played with bots ... unsat them and took their spot, killed them, orbited them, to see what they knew how to do. I watched as the sophistication of their names, clothing and programming evolved rapidly. I found the libsl dev groups, and rapidly learned a lot about the open client community.

Then a friend of mine asked me to model at her store, and one of my alts went to do that.

Then gambling was banned, and overnight my very favorite camping spot, a little Italian casino with a fun owner, tight-knit clientelle, a great exploder, good payouts and a real fun cheap craps table, disappeared.

And I decided I knew enough about camping :) But I love that I did it, because I felt ring-side for two big events in SL: the onset of bots, and the gambling ban. And it got me to look at the open source dev groups.

When I first got into SL I camped once or twice, but I quickly learned that "IT AIN'T WORTH IT"...you probably spend the same amount of money in electricity as you earn camping (or more)...I can't see a reason to camp when it's so much cheaper to just buy 5 bucks worth of L$

Nowdays if I want L$ without spending RL money it's time to make & sell:)

none of these options apply to me.
Answer: i camped to satisfy my curiosity, never for income.

I camped in the beginning just to see what it was about.
In April 2006 second life front page used to have a map of the grid with postcards on it.
Many of the postcards said "Camping Chairs" I could see this map even before I joined SL. I really wanted to know what that was, so it was one of the first things i checked out in SL. I won't go so far as to say it was a reason I joined SL, but it was one thing i was curious about after poking around the 2D second life site.

Incidentally, the second thing i searched for was "Adoption".

I have constantly camped.

This month will be the first month where camping will not be my largest piece of income.

One of the first things I did in SL was try to chat with a camper. I saw the ".. has made 1L" and asked "So.... What did you do to make that money"... He didn't repond and a lady somerhere said "We are camping." I rolled my eyes... Moved on... and setup my payment information. (^_^)

Same here. I figured, if I'm logged in, I want to be DOING stuff, not sitting there like a bump on a log.

Nope. I mostly sat on a plywood platform over a friend's land for the first few months, learning to build and script. When I came up with something I thought was good enough to sell, I started selling it, and then I had money.

I have not ever camped, and have never had anyone camping from me yet (Will once I finally finish stocking my store lol...)

I see no point. You can make more from tips hosting, dancing, or as an escort.. and I can do all of those perfectly well. I've actually only danced twice, one of which was at the Hangout lol... so meh..

I build. And I buy L$ myself. I see no reason not to.

I don't know if you'd call it a camping place but GT's Sandbox used to have a random money orb that paid people who were working in the sandbox. It was a great arrangement as I was usually there for several hours building junk and I used almost all the money for uploading files for things I made. As for the regular sit camping I never really had the patience to sit and do nothing for long periods of time and sitting afk always seemed like a waste of computer resources.
