You've got to be careful swallowing when you have the rings in your mouth otherwise they'll take longer to get back in a clean state.

I've most often had other people to do my computer stuff for me but my last computer was fun and got me in sl.
Now I wanna look after my next one.
So what do I use to keep my screen clean?
I live on teh Atlantic coast (salt air) and then continental climate so temperatures differ. And then I travel tons. So it gets dusty and dirty.
Any preferences to share with all of us?

The #1 best thing you can possibly do to keep a computer clean is to go to Best Buy or somewhere and get a can of compressed air and an antistatic wristband. A couple of times a year pop your computer open and dust with the compressed air. Make sure to use the wristband and touch the metal frame inside the case once in a while. Static is very, VERY bad for computers. The compressed air also works great for cleaning between the keys in your keyboard and other impossible to reach places. There are also static free wipes you can get that are basically a Wetnap for electronics. You can just use the standard Windex and paper towels for the screen. Works just as well on Windows Vista as it does on house windows. Just make sure you don't use too much or it'll drip on your keyboard. If it's a laptop I have no idea. I've never tried to clean an LCD monitor before.

Not if you take the battery out (this is a laptop, isn't it?). But you might commit suicide when you open that laptop and find you just broke it bad. :)

OK, so I take out the battery and push stuff tighter down. Seems simple enough.

Well, you unplug it first of course. On desktops that is. I wouldn't try it on a laptop. I'm not even sure how to go about opening a laptop and I'm pretty sure that would void your warranty anyway.

I don't end up needing to clean my monitor... but I do find that I need to re-paint my ceiling every couple of months.

Well, a half cup of alcohol should give you a nice start to the morning, Maggie. You remidn me of Laurin and Deira on teh forums. They're the Gin Queens.

Jig - I'm off the G&T now - I _did_ tell you! Nothing but the best malt from now on - even tho' with all the hassel I've had this week I'm in need of a double brandy right now! (No - not to clean my screen with _ i use a little antiseptic surface cleaner on a very soft cloth for that.)

This season why not treat ourself to a bottle of Cointreau or Drambuie? I used to drink tons and tons of Tia Maria on ice. But I sleep now.
Nighters all.

I wipe gently with a microfiber cloth periodically (like, when I see dust on the monitor when rebooting and realize how filthy it really is!). If there are spots, I get the cloth slightly damp, but try not to press hard against the monitor, just rub lightly. I like the idea of using a q-tip around the edges; I'll have to try that next time. I will probably get that damp with a little water first, to get the fuzzies to stick to it.

As for the alcohol - I prefer rum. A sip out of the glass for each swipe across the screen!

Mmmmmm - if I wasn't snowed in, I'd be out buying some! Well, I have a nice bottle of wine stashed away here. :)

Cleaning laptop screens with windex is a bad idea. About a year ago, someone had a bottle of that stuff sitting on their desk, so I decided to snatch it and clean my computer screens. As I watched the little trails of liquid snake down the screen taking the dirt with them (yes it was on, real men don't need to turn the power off), I thought I was really smart until the trails reached the bottom of the screen, wrapped around it, and started snaking back up the screen on the inside. Oops came to mind, but nothing started to spark, smoke, or sizzle. As I quickly removed the evidence, all that remained was a nice white semi-transparent halo on the inside of the screen cover.

I never told anyone, but now that I am leaving the company at the end of the year, I bet the next user will do some head scratching trying to figure out what that halo is and how to get rid of it.

If its a Dell, I can open it & clean it. I usually do when I'm replacing parts in someone's laptop.

They REALLY need a better design for laptops cooling fans. OR at least make it easy for someone to open to blow the dust out.

Whenever I'm sent somewhere to fix a laptop thats "over-heating", most of the time the heatsink is CLOGGED with hair & dust.

Actually.... The amount of static required to kill a computer circuit is LESS than what a human can feel.

To REALLY give your Laptop or LCD Monitor a good cleaning:

#1. Get some 200, 600 & 1000 grit sandpaper

#2. Wet sandpaper & sand the screen in a clockwise motion.

#3. Sand with each grit, from 200 to 1000 till the screen is clean.

#4. Call the manufacturer and see if you screen is covered against PEBKAC errors. :D
