Paranoia over pedophillia

Yep it took a lot longer for gay couples where alowed to adopt a child then it was for single women in the netherlands, even longer then same sex mariage and even now a lot of countries will not assist in gay couples adopting.

Well, unfortunately, a really significant proportion of the men, in SL anyway, DO spend their time "chasing women and engaging in brutish behaviour." And yes, it is culturally determined.

This doesn't justify the tendency to stereotype men in this way, but it goes a long way towards explaining why it happens.

Please don't misunderstand me, and think that I am suggesting that all men are like this; I wouldn't even want to suggest that a majority are. But it is common enough to have generated the stereotype.

And I am, of course, well aware of how generalizations, even well-documented ones, become falsehoods when applied to individuals. And I DO know many men, in RL and SL, who are admirably free of this kind of thinking. (In fact, MOST of the men I know in RL and SL are free of it, because I don't much care to associate with those who are not.)

I thought id set the record straight about KidsBots and some of the questions brought up here.

1) We do NOT record Local Chat. Our kids are able to use ALICE Technology to respond to IMs that they are sent, on their own. These IMs to the bot are stored by ALICE and can be accessed if need be. We also have a record of any animations that they use. We have no interest in watching conversations all day long of people we dont even know.

This helps in the event that it is reported to LL or to us, that the bot was used in a manner that may be against the TOS. Also, really, when you IM anyone in SL, you are taking the chance that the IM is logged on the user's computer. Its an option that everyone in SL has in their options.

Again, Local Chat is NOT recorded in any way. This was told clearly to the origional poster, but he decided to post otherwise here.

2) Our bots are kid AVIs. Its just that simple. We dont want them involved in ANY adult situation. We have taken many precautions to ensure that they dont... From perminant skins with clothing painted on them, interviews with potiental adopters, how to report bad conduct info on their profiles, etc.

LL's TOS is very specific what child avatars can and can not do. We have to take measures to make sure that we are in compliance in order to stay in business.

3) There are lots of great avenues of adopting a kid in SL. These certainly arent a replacement for kids with real people behind the avatar. This is just another option for people to enhanse their SL experience.

Note: The origional posters adoption was denied for two reasons:

1) He was a single guy who told us he wanted to use the bot to "Pick up the ladies". I didnt feel that that was what our kids adoptions are intended for...

But the main reason...

2) After being asked SEVERAL times if he accepted our TOS (which is designed to keep our kids save and in complance with LL's TOS), he kept dancing around to avoid saying yes. After asking over and over, it just didnt seem like a good fit.

99% of our KidsBots adoptions are completed easily. But if anyone refuses to acceot our TOS, there is no way we can complete the adoption.

Since I do not know your business well enough, I cannot say much about it. Except one thing: Use an alt for this line of business. Your nick (plus your other live of business, if I remember well) combined with child bots is asking for trouble to happen.

I can appreciate that Mercel. But I have been around here a long time, tons of people know me and know that im a stand up person. Unfortunitly in business, we can please everyone.

My name here is what it is, I made it long ago, and unfortunitly SL wont let us change it. People who hide their businesses, usually have something to hide. I believe in my products and im not gonna hide from them. Thats totally not my style.

Even though the poster left out why he was denied and lied about the chat being logged, most likely cause he was upset he was denied. Im kinda glad he posted it. Yea, it will cause a little drama in my life, but it also shows that we do, indeed, intend for our kids to be used for good purposes.

On that note, this will be my last post about KidsBots. Enjoy SL everyone, thats what this place is supposed to be all about.

Well, I am totally clueless because I thought the children on SL were played by adults... bot you say? hmm... is this like a little prim baby or such that cries and such? Tells you when it has poopie diaper and whatnot?

How coudl one abuse something that is programed to only do certian tasks?

We at Virtual Ability, have the Alice technology in a monkey. His name is Bob and he's on our orientation island, chatting up new residents as they come by on our training course, as they learn to walk, fly, open a box, etc. He swings from a tree, grabs a banana, peels and eats it as he chats up the new residents. These bots really arent that terribly interactive, although they 'learn' somewhat, based on what is said to them. Mostly they repeat/rephrase whatever it is you said. (For example, every time anyone says 'LOL' to our Bob, he responds 'I'm glad you find that amusing'. Because 'LOL' is a trigger for that response. He can be frustrating, and has had several people cuss him out, because his responses are so ambiguous and generic. He also throws stuff back at you like if you ask him, what time is it, he'll respond, What time do YOU think it is? lol. He's fun for a minute but I wouldn't want a kid chatting me like that, would get old pretty quickly. Just an opinion on the Alice technology, really, not looking to have kids in SL anyway.

I had to Lol a bit at that one. This is why I take outraged threads with a teeny grain of salt.

"Naughty" is far far away from a sexual term and best worn like a badge for kid AVs. It's right up there with "brat". Ooh... "Naughty brat!" (^_^)y

I don't get the appeal of avatar-bots, at all.

I can definitely see the appeal for playing around with an AI, but that would mean having scripts I could play with myself, not relying on some company to control them.

If you want a kid without the hassle of being a full-time RP parent, why not just adopt a normal child av and be up front about the fact that you don't want to RP full time? I actually gave up on running my child av largely for that reason -- she wouldn't have been available more than a few hours a week at most, and the adoptive parents listed all seemed to be looking for a full-time RP commitment. I would have jumped at the chance if someone had said they only wanted a part-time kid. If there's a market for kid-bots, I'd imagine there's a fair few people who want to be part-time parents -- and probably the same number of people who'd like to be part-time kids.

And I'm seeing more and more employee-bots these days too. Other than for themed greeters like Treasure described, why not hire real people? More trouble to manage, sure, but less trouble from people who don't realize that av is a bot, get annoyed when she doesn't answer their questions, and then go badmouth your business elsewhere. It's not like there's a shortage of people who'd be glad for a job that isn't camping or stripping.
