From: Katheryne Helendale It's the principle of the matter. When interacting with a real person (or an avatar with a real person behind it), it is understood that the person can log the things you say and do. But this isn't an avatar controlled by a real person, so expectations are different.. Obviously they're different - but they have no right to be. For the thing to be online, that means there has to be a client running on some computer somewhere, that the person who operates the computer could be looking at, at any given time. In fact, you're bound to interact with real people at some point, since in order to do things like change the avatar's clothing or proportions, height, etc you have to contact a company rep who will be accessing the running client for that particular avatar in order to do so. From: Katheryne Helendale There is also the matter of feedback. If I say something that you find offensive, you will likely tell me that, or give me some indication that I said something wrong, and I can stop or change course before real damage is done. I don't get that kind of feedback from a bot. That's true, but it's likely that the bot will not take offense at anything. I'm sure some at the company might, but I reckon they have some guidelines on what is or is not appropriate.

From: spinster Voom I have to delete her whenever I log off, which feels deeply wrong. We always ... yes this is ridiculous ... make sure our cat is inside before we log off. <- nuts. .

Where did I put that 10' pole of mine? You know, the one. Anyway, I touched on this controversy at http://marianne.secondlifekid.com/

From: Imnotgoing Sideways Good: "Is your avatar over 18?" - "Why yes, it is."
Bad: "Is your avatar over 18?" - "What's wrong with you? Why are you accusing me of being a kid?!"
What's your answer if someone just asks "How old are you?" That's the wording I expect to be used the most.

Honestly, I'm not sure what that bot creator is thinking. I mean are they some kind of expert in behavioral psychology that they can weed out the bad people? Are they maybe a retired FBI profiler turned SL bot maker? Honestly if your product requires screening like that... maybe you shouldn't be selling it.
Oh well. That whole vetting process cuts both ways as the OP has shown. How many normal people do you think have been turned away simply because they take offense at the line of questioning? How many smart perverts have managed to get by?
Maybe the seller should just change their whole plan just sell bots in adult form but give the buyer all the options to change the shape, clothing, etc.

Assume 18 (^_^)y" Bad: "What made you ask such a question? Isn't it obvoius?! Can't you see?! I'm this short in real life! I'm just trying to keep it real!" =^-^=

RL Frankenbarbie. Completely anatomically correct sex doll. There are many different versions to choose from. Creepy, eh?

Strikes me as a bit weird that the creator is named "Naughty Dreamscape" - as well as selling stripper bots from the same business. Gee I wonder how the press gets the wrong idea.

What, dare I ask, is the point of this monstrosity??? Go to youtube and key in the words "real doll." There's been documentaries on the topic. There are also "real babies" for women who crave the feeling of being a mom, but either can't, or are too old, or have empty nest syndrome, etc. Docu on that, too. It's all on youtube. SL isn't the first place people went looking for a virtual spouse or family.

A few years back my ex and I had a sl daughter and she was a loads of fun. She's all grown up and is now under a new alt. I did the prim baby thing and that talking tummy got on my nerves not to mention all the inventory stuff it generated. I hardly wore the thing. I have friends that have huge sl families and I am a part of a few. My sl sister was fussing one day over how her 2 daughters were using up too many prims for their room and their son didn't hardly have any. As she was telling me this, I was thinking wow that sounds so rl, the woman taking up more closet space than the man. Then I was thinking well after raising my own 2 kids irl and having the freedom of being a empty nester, do I want to be bother with having children in sl.
When I first read OP first posting I was like ok, I think this would be kinda of cool. After reading the article and comments on the Herald as we well as those posted here, I decided against. That 899L/weekly payment is a turn off. I understand the need to maintain servers, but that to me is expensive for a REALLY fake child. Also, the interviewing process to me seems quite invasive. I went through the interviewing process with an adoption agency and found it quite amusing. From reading some of the questions asked for these types of bots, well.... IMO I find them to be intrusive. It comes across to me as ok you are labeled as a paedo until you can prove otherwise. I find that disturbing because this is a "bot", no matter how advance it is, its a bot. I'm not going through all that scrutiny for a 899L @ week bot.

Nothing wrong with silcone dolls, much easier on those with a latex allergy. I often thought Nike should do a model, advertised with the tag line: Just Do It.

Just Do It. I didn't say anything was wrong with the silicone dolls themselves and understand those with latex allergy may have to use them. I personally, (note that I said personally) found the guy that has two of them as creepy. Did you see the special?

Anyway, this whole experience has taught me a very important lesson.
If as an animated character in a virtual world, it is naturally assumed that I am a pedophile because I want to adopt a computer generated image of a little girl, controlled by a basic computer program, what would happen I tried to adopt a child in real life. I would probably go to jail or be killed.
That is why everyone natural assumed that Michael Jackson was a pedophile, just because he liked children, and that is something no big man should do. No, big men are supposed to spend their time chasing women and engaging in brutish behaviour. That is what being a man is all about, according to society!
