I have one specific new tenant who has had significant problems on one specific sim of mine. The sim statistics are all near perfect (dilation 0.99-1.0, sim fps 43-45, physics fps 43-45), and neither I nor anyone else on that seem has had any issues there.
When she has problems, the symptoms are: - Cannot see adjacent sims. Three other sims of mine are visible from this sim, but when this tenant has her problems, the other sims vanish from her view. - Cannot access About Land information - Cannot load Groups - In-world items and avatars do not rez completely. - Difficulty teleporting into the sim.
She says she has had this problem on other sims, and only in the past month or so. She claims to have spoken to LL support, who recommended that sim owners restart the sims she has problems on. This did not make any sense to me, because things like the group list and item rezzing involve the asset server moreso than the specific sim you're on (or so I thought). But on Saturday, as a test, I restarted the problem sim, and lo and behold, when the sim came back online, the tenant said everything was working perfectly. And things were fine for her the rest of the weekend- but half an hour ago she notified me that the issues have popped up again. And I am not the type to restart sims unless it's absolutely necessary...
This does not make any sense to me at all- why would she only have these problems on some sims? Why wasn't anyone else on the sim having the same issues? How can a sim restart make loading your personal group list work better?
I am going to contact LL about this, but fear it won't go anywhere, since it's not really MY problem. Anyone else have insight or experience with this new weird issue?

Hi Wildfire Diagnosing a users computer issues remotely is sotra like asking a brain surgeon to tell you how to do a lobotomy over a cell phone with no signal. With that said its could be any number of things most are related to her computer. I would suggest this: I see many trying to run SL on the barest minimum of equipment and then rant and rave that SL should be fixed when in fact its their puter that is the problem.

I had this happen myself in December, and it included extreme difficulties with TPs. I'm willing to bet your tenant is on satellite or wireless. She needs to contact her ISP and work with them to resolve the issue. Not being able to see other sims is a clear indication that something isn't going through on their end...or so I was told by LL. ETA: I should mention that my ticket on this is still open, and seemingly being ignored. The ISP worked with me and opened all ports on their end and I opened all ports on my end, and that straightened out *most* of the issues. After about a month of this ongoing problem...it just magically seemed to clear up. A trouble ticket is definitely in order.

HoneyBear, when she described her symptoms to me, I was convinced that was the issue as well- but she is adamant that she only has the problem on some sims. And she said the problem did go away when I restarted my sim (until this morning at least). The problem is really challenging my understanding of the grid and how people connect to it.
The user is in the UK; I don't know how well SL generally performs for UK residents in comparison to USA folks, but I know a lot of UK SLers and haven't heard of this specific problem before.

Likewise...it was primarily my home sim. In fact, for about 2 weeks, I couldn't leave home, unless I logged off and logged back on using the sim name as my start location. It sucked. But eventually (and after some tinkering by my ISP)...it just went away. Mostly. Since then, I'm good 99% of the time, but sometimes TPing is still an issue. Of note, my ISP says that none of the tinkering they did should have affected SL at all. The Lindens were suspiciously quiet about the whole thing - in fact, the ticket remains open and unresolved. One of the Lindens even chased me down (name escapes me atm) to ask if it had been resolved. Data Linden asked for my logs. But nobody has contacted me since. Seriously...she needs to file a support ticket telling them about this.

Very interesting subject...I thought it was just me a month ago..or a SL laggy type thing. Got onto concierge who suggested it was my end with my net provider (it was only happening intermitently so some sims i had the issue, others not, the next week other sims and so on, fairly random) Sooo I got on AOL...and double checked with them what connection speeds I had, were they throttling my connection etc etc etc..they said it was most definately not them. However..I had reason to call them again about a billing issue and whillst sorting this out, the chap mentioned I was infact NOT on the connection speed I was paying for as it wasnt enabled yet in my area (Id been paying for it for a YEAR!) But..on the 28th January, they upgraded the local network so I now get the higher speed connection...and guess what>? (crossing fingers, chanting and spinning around on one leg) NO ISSUES NOW! Id say its most probably your residents issue not your sim... oh forgot to say , Im in the UK

From: Love Hastings Could it be a connectivity issue with a specific LL location? Can a sim restart cause it to jump locations? A restart does cause a sim to pop up on another physical server, and it CAN cause the sim to hop to a different real-world co-location facility (I have documented this occurring at least once), even though sims are not supposed to hop to different facilities except as a last resort. I just spoke to Concierge and they are convinced it's the user's connection too, and think the tenant is confusing the intermittent nature of the problem with being a sim-specific problem. I might try moving her to a different sim to see what happens.

If it were sim specific, everyone would see the issue. Given it seems only she's seeing the issue, it has to be something on her end. If she's in the UK, it could easily be problems with the trans-atlantic trunk and/or her service provider. I've noticed over the years that the UK seems to have a lot of issues that other regions don't.

Wireless shouldn't be a problem as long as the signal is good, and if it's not, you'll have more widespread problems than these. People keep claiming that wireless is bad for SL, but I've yet to hear a specific technical reason that holds up (other than simply bad signal).

My particular ISP also blocks P2P (irritates the crap out of me). And whether its the ISP or not, you have to be able to prove to LL that the issue is their's, so thus, you have to get your ISP to look at things.

Within the past couple months I've been seeing those exact problems. But... Only in the Hanja and Ahern welcome area sims. My last few visits to Hanja have been somewhat bug free. Moving has been difficult... But, to TP into a situation like this ain't fun:::

I have had these problems also...but they are sporadic and seem to be SL issues. I would put it down to bad day at the grid.

I've had something like that happen for a day recently and in my case it was definitely not a computer or network issue, as my alt could see and walk into the neighbouring sim, while at the same time for me it was just a void -- nothing to see, could not walk over the border. I could teleport there after some tries, but if I left and went back to the neighbouring sim, I still couldn't see it. The problem went away either the next day or with the rolling restart, I'm not sure which.
So, not computer or network, in this case. It could still be a viewer issue somehow (I'm on 1.21 and my alt on a 1.18-based one).

Oh. This is why the adjacent sim in Nautilus City looked like a void for a long time. I couldn't figure out why no one was complaining or why it just wasn't there. It probably is something with my computer. And I've seen this issue elsewhere. Every once in a while.

If the person hasn't tried already, then next time the problems manifest I would suggest they try resetting their router/modem, and clearing their DNS cache to see if that helps. It wouldn't hurt to run whatever maintenance routines they have on their computer as well, to ensure there's nothing blocking or interfering with the network traffic on the various ports SL uses.
When you restarted the region that most likely moved it to a different server, and if the person was having dns/router problems with the first sim, then changing servers bypassed the problem without actually curing it -- allowing it to gradually catch up with them on the new server.

My wife and I share a connection, two computers, one router. I have experienced the "no adjacent sim" problem a couple of times now, and she had no problems at the same time, so it seems to be client specific. I can fly out over the "non-existant" area as if it were open water sim, still get chat, etc. Fly back out of it even. Strange occurrence...

I'm afraid that this is one of many items in a string of coincidences that came together with the rollout of the 1.25.x server. (T_T)

Dead Sims
02-10-2009 11:52
Hi all, i'm the tenant involved in Wilds post Will give you all the symptons first ...bare in mind these follow my Av being kicked from sl suddenly with the LL pop messege that issues with sim etc 1. About land info is totally blank to me 2. No media controls whatt so ever 3. time out when try to tp out of sim 4. Any adjacent Sim vanish..few times have been able to fly outside sim border which is kinda trippy 5. Groups vanish from group list i am still able to rez objects from inv and everything inv related loads fine and chats works fine also... have no lag...Like an almost perfect running sl...lol I have tried all the things uggested by LL , resetting router etc, numurous things yet still the problem occurs...it happens on both regular SL client and also RC client I am also not on a satellite or wireless connection...my connection does not drop that i can see when the kick from SL happens...we all know how dropping connection gets you kicked eventually....but this problems starts with a sudden kick. And yes so far only thing that seems to bring a sim back to life for me is a sim restart...even logging over night..logging back in next day...the sim will still be dead to me First occurance of this was about a month ago but seems to be getting progressivly more frequent any ideas would be apprciated....and i'm not just moaning at SL because my system is slow etc....this is a new problem and my system is fine...the gap between my System and SL..who knows ,,,Thanks in advance all

TTL. Being in the UK, the user would be in prime login time for her area (between 11am SLT is 7PM local time). Find out if this occurs around the same time each time. I agree this sounds like an ISP issue but may only show up of higher bandwidth usage of her local region.

Well the OP may want to contact LL to have them check the server that the sim is running on. Maybe there is an issue on that side of things. I had a similar problem once but it went away with a relog so I never had a chance to really troubleshoot it.
I say if you were running fine up until a month ago... has anything changed on your personal PC? New hardware? Software? Have you checked the performace to make sure it's not spiking on CPU or RAM?
