In this thread /327/6f/249398/1.htmlThe issue was raised as to whether a cheesecake is actually a pie or not. It has the properties of a pie but the name says cake. So an official poll to determine this as a matter of fact needs to be run. Please vote with your heart, be honest Of course an explanation of your reasoning is required...

Actually its a pie because it sits within a crust, where a cake can stands on its own. Its kinda like a tomato being a fruit….hard to accept but someone made that decision long before we were around. So even though its called cake….its pie!

BTW -
These threads weren't even allowed in the old general. Even under the most easy-going of the mods there.
They were allowed in the old off-topic (sandbox) section though.

Although cheesecake sits ontop of a crust, it is not supported by or surrounded by the crust - a proper pie has crust beneath and up the sides, and may or may not have a crust on top as well. Whereas a cheesecake has the crust beneath but not necessarily up the sides, and it does (or should) stand under its own weight. Personally, I don't think it's a pie. But I won't call it a cake either- It's Cheesecake, a thing unto itself. Edited to add: Chocolate Grand Marnier with Mandarin Oranges -Atashi

Now see if someone leaves the sides off a cheesecake...well its simply not a cheesecake as far as I am concerned.....it's it's a mutant cheese something

you evil evil people....im stuck at work, no lunch, with my mind drifting back to my kitchen and the ingredients to make a cheesecake just sat there...at home....out of reach hmmf.. But a cheesecake is a thing in and of itself...like others have said. I dont think it is a pie. but it doesnt fit my ideas of a cake...its both: 'Some types of cheesecake are custard pie, rather than a true cake, which can lead a novice baker to cheesecake failure.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesecake

it would be called CHEESEPIE if it was a PIE!!!! the real question should be what kind of cheese do you use to make this cake? can you make an american cheesecake and mozarella cheesecake? or is the whole thing just a scam and it is a pie with no cheese in it? The world may never know.............
