A very good thought. I give two alts a full perms copy of everything I make, just in case.

Dearly Darling,

What an excellent idea! I don't have an alt but I do have several RL Sisters and a Great Niece here. I'll make a package for each of them. Losing textures from inventory IS frustrating! And if the little varmits are indeed out gambling and whoring around... I don't want virual herpes or bastard prims in my inventory when they decide to come home.

You all have a lovely afternoon!

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

jeez, if it isn't one thing it's always another. First thing this AM; before I found out my textures had went on walkabout, I was sorting a freebie box. I had a couple of items that wouldn't delete. But were gone when I logged back in; in an attempt to find my wayward textures. Now I'm walking into and over things that aren't there.

I bet voice gets a patch before the day is out.

it would take an eternity to upload, label, and categorise 1000 textures. an amount of time worth far more than a packet of cigarettes.

inv items often reappear after a random amount of time though.

True and true...

But what my point really was (and I was not very clear about that, I know) in any online game/community (and that are quite a few by now) I have been part, I lost items... due my own mistakes, bugs, system failure, you name it...

I lost my complete flower seed collection once in UO (and let me assure that there was a lot of time involved in that). And yes, I said some very nasty words about that...

But in example of the OP... does 4 us$ plus time involved, undo all the fun there is here in SL?
If I would think that way, I should have left any online game/community I am/have been involved in very fast. I lost some very expensive items.... (arrggg... my Shroud of Shadows in UO, my Avalon robe in L2 (when they were still rare)). After that it happened some times I accepted that a risk I had to count on.
But main reason for me to be in an environment as SL is to have fun. And yes, I know people have businesses here, but I still hope that most of them are here mainly to have fun (and business can be fun) and not only to "make money".

In my RL job (I am in business) I have also to face back luck and misfortune... but that doesn't make me change my job at all.

So back to the OP.... does the little amount of 4 us$, even with the time involved to handle them, to drop SL? I may hope not...

ps. I am happy the OP has her stuff back.

Morwen.

On uploading textures:
If you design them yourself *always* keep a local backup. If it isn't for the chance of texture loss, it's for the fact LL compresses any texture to JPEG2000 (lossy), so if you want to reuse it, to create a new texture, you don't want to re-download and use the uploaded texture, but the original one stored locally.

On losing inventory:
There are 2 kinds of inventory losses:

1. Database loss ( an item or complete folder is completely gone from inventory). This means that the original assets are probably still around, but the specific inventory entries in the SQL database are gone. LL can try retrieving this, but they usually don't.
Backing up inventory to alts or keeping them in world will avoid this problem.

2. Asset loss ( an item is still in your inventory, but as soon as you try rezzing it, it says 'item not found in database', this one is actually more common). This means the actual asset (texture, sound etc.) has been either lost of accidentily removed by the 'garbage collector'. A process where assets that are no longer referenced in world are deleted from the asset server.

Fixing this problem by LL is sometimes possible, if it's caused by accidental garbage collection, as the 'garbage collection' has a failsafe, where stuff isn't deleted immediately, but as in the former case, LL usually doesn't fix it.

Saving items to alts/putting them in boxes etc, will not immediately fix this one. The item is gone for everybody / everywhere. Although keeping copies of items in world could maybe prevent this asset loss, as the more references out there, the less chance it's actually 'garbage collected'. (On the assumption, the item is lost due to garbage collection instead of some random delete/harddisk wipe etc. on the asset server.)

One last remark. Sometimes SL loses the 'connection' between asset server and grid or database server. This can make it look like assets have been lost. So, if you get the dreaded 'item not found in database', it could be just a temporary connection loss / server down etc., and stuff could be fixed in the long run. Often waiting a little while will fix it.

:( *rubs my tembles with the tips of my fingers in slow agonizing circles* We dont want to talk about how much money is lost in inventory items disappearing do we? *thinks of a few bills she could have paid with everything that has gone poof*

There is no SURE safe way to make sure your items dont wander off, and NO they dont always come back. After losing over 100kL in items, yall can understand why my last sim got sold. LL has enough of my money. I could care less about voice, fix yer asset server issues...oh...please?

"SL is to have fun" yes, and I have a lot of fun building and texturing things. I love to create, but I hate starting all over again; although I do quite often as I'm learning, or go back and redo older items once i have learned more.
But these on going, apparently not impotent enough to fix problems are really putting me off.
Not so much the problems, but that they apparently aren't getting fixed.
I have also been told one way to lessen problems is to not carry so much in your inventory. That the less you carry the less of a chance you have of having some problems.

And I know I have looong hair, but the last time I was mistaken for a women I split a guy's lip. Well he grabbed my butt. Of coarse I still wonder about that one, as I have shoulders like an ox. :)

Well, I look at it this way....

1000 x 10L = 1000L$ = 4 us$ (roughly) = 3 Euro (roughly again).... One glas of a good wine? Not even a package of cigarettes over here (and I don't smoke).

What are we talking about.... So concerning money we talk about nothing.

Morwen...

Tell that to the guy who threatened to grief me with sound spam unless I payed him $50L, cheapskate....:)

There are a number of people who make various organizers - I use on by Cortex Designs made by SunenRec Ayoob. I have the copyable version so I can keep different categories seperated.

Yup, I store my home-made textures both on my hard drive and on a flash drive... you never know when your puter's gonna take a dump.

But you made these textures, so they started life on your computer. When you uploaded them, the originals remained on your computer. Unless you deliberately deleted them, they should still be on your computer.

What I am missing here is why this means you have to start all over with these 100+ textures. Do they not still exist on your hard drive, so that all you have to do is upload them again?

(I understand they did reappear in your inventory, so that's good ... but if they had not, didn't you have back up copies on your home computer?

To the OP I feel your pain. Its annoying, I have had it several times. It is one of down sides of being texture maker or doodler.
It may show up again the ones you downloaded if it works.
I can't do bulk uploads even though it says its a option.
There been few times I uploaded texture was charged for it or thought I was then some failure happen and poof no texture.
I am still trying to figure out how to create system so the important files i.e textures I can always find on hard drive.

The truly sad thing is some of the inventory loss issues in JIRA date back to APRIL.

I had a Texture Previewer/Organizer custom made, and it is copyable...

Preview 25 textures at a time on the main panel, I think it's one if not THE biggest Texture Previewer in SL and it only cost L$500.

It's very efficient, easy to use and slick, comes with a note card/manual.

If you want a copy, contact me in world.

Is it possible that when inventory disappears, that it could eventually come back? I think that's happened to me briefly, but things return to normalcy. I'm not talking about going to your L&F...I mean, straight back to your inventory where it should be.

I hope you are right... I have so much stuff in inventory I have never noticed anything missing before until I went to plant an apple tree last night... I bought enough apple trees from Lilith Heart to make a nice orchard and they are gone from inventory, the only one left is the one I planted in Chodron :/

Up to now (touch wood), things that have disappeared from my inventory have always reappeared the next day.

Sorry, I am extremely angry. Logged in to SL and half the textures in my inventory are gone. Well over 100 that I spent 10L each to upload. Yes I waited an hour and they never loaded. Logged off, cleared my cache, came back and waited another hour. They seem to be quite gone. And I will not spend the Ls to upload them again. Why? so they can just evaporate again?
So I am done spending Ls on anything; save rent, in SL till these inventory bugs are fixed.
Which means I will no longer be spending anything in SL because it is quite apparent the only bugs the Lindens are interested in fixing are Voice bugs.

Out of curiosity just how many Ls have you lost in inventory evaporation?
Yes that includes the no rez disappear from inventory items that merchants don't replace; I'm not saying all merchants don't replace these items but there are those that wont.

It's an Inventory Bug, i had almost All my Image Files Vanish on me once, Textures AND Photo Album. Wait a few Days, if it Doesn't return, File a Bug Report, and Keep on to tech Support, they aren't Gone Forever, LL just needs to Know they are Missing, and that you are Adamant in regards to getting them Back. There isn't much that We in the Forums can do for you besides telling you to Keep at it. I've seen it Many times before, and it Ends well in all but the most Catastrophic Server Problems.

Angel.
