Wow, how many alts is that now? 10? More?

I hope they've all voted for the Hippos.

I've always thought a Library of Notable builds would be nice, having photographs of all, but rezzing just one a month.

It would be interesting to see some of the old, long-gone builds again, but many of the early ones are gone forever. Some of the post-RezFoo builds might be lurking in someone's inventory, and of course there are new builds all the time.

It's not a bad thing to just appreciate things while we have them and then move on, however.

So, we've lost the Starry Night sim, and the SS Galaxy will soon be making her final voyage.

Do you think that LL should work with designers of those types of sims to procure the build and keep it alive, effectively creating a "National Treasure"?

Or is it burdensome to expect them to utilize apparently precious simulator space for them?

If they were smart, which I doubt more and more, they would invest in retaining significant attributes such as these. And should have started doing so years ago. Sadly, I suspect they are now in a serious downward economic spiral and may not be able to make the investments necessary.

When Renaissance Island recently lost its initial funding source, the organizers took this action. They appealed to the group for donations--and spelled out exactly what they needed. Enough of us responded that funds were raised within a week to make tier for the next quarter. They also threw a benefit-concert, the profits of which went into a tier account. The organizers are still looking for other non-SL funding sources, but if none emerge, the avatar-sponsorship model may have to do.

They didn't offer mugs, by the way, but they did offer a special group title for a sufficiently large donation.

There are also a few philanthropists on the grid who tend to quietly support projects.

Though a bit fewer now, since tier is so stratospheric.

What about some kind of yearly Linden Awards - the best builds get nominated and the winners get free or discounted tier for a year. There could be a Showcase category for current and former winners, helping them to get traffic and business to stay afloat after the free-tier year ends.

Good idea. I'd make the vote be per USER, not per avatar, so that people couldn't game the voting system.

If LL was interested in this concept at all, they would have started with Privateer Space. Instead, they sided with the griefers that wanted it shut down... Banned the girl that owned and built everything on the sim. Made it impossible for her to handle her resulting billing issues, and eventually let the griefers win by finally shutting the sim down. Only if it were a democracy. SL isn't a democracy.

Well, there's be cries of FIC to the skies if it wasn't at least reasonably transparent. And even with that, there'd still be planning. You'd be much more likely to get people trying to "build to" what the Lindens would want, and then if it becomes popular, making up a reason why they couldn't continue funding the land, to push the Lindens into a decision to sponsor it or not, on pain of a weeping drama-filled shutdown with placard waving and petitions if they don't.

From: Desmond Shang
If these builds really matter, I mean... *really* matter... get 30 people together to cough up 10 bucks a month indefinitely. Or 60 people to give 5 a month. That will float a region no problem! You could get stickers or something, or a mug to show your support.

Or maybe it's not so important... and there really aren't 60 people out there who care enough?

The issue is the regular commitment, I think. Nobody wants to think they'll be in a situation where they have to pay for something they enjoyed very much a few years ago, but no longer really visit, but they have to keep paying because without them the tier will be US$5 short and even that is enough to have the whole sim taken down.

FIC was damaging enough that it changed some Linden policies, I doubt they would want it back.

There have been so many wonderful builds over the years and there will be many more. I missed seeing my fav by 2 years. One of the first private regions was Krittannia and some of the very best creators came together to depict Heaven and Hell. I am partial to the Heaven part which was created by an absolutely charming mermaid named Myradyl Muse. The pictures in the links do not do justice to the scope/ scale or beauty. I was fortunate to see a slideshow presentation by Myradyl a couple of years ago in SL.

Here is an archived New World Notes page on Krittania:

http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2004/05/notes_on_kritan.html
(EDITTED Sorry to have made you suffer Ghosty!!!)

and some pics:

http://www.kyoot.net/gallery/krittannia

and the wiki page:

But to get a clear idea of just how much you are missing by just seeing the pictures, pop over to Myradyl's Mermaid Sanctuary, her home in SL:

Would be great to have them exist on the Beta grid. Sort of a Lost Worlds Feature.. the Grid-Go-Back feature.

Pah! I concentrate on the important things! So important, in fact, that I can't tell you what they are. But they're important. Very important.

Why? Because they responded to their users? FIC wasn't something nice and wonderful that a small group whined about anyway. Although it has about 5 different meanings and some are still relevant so that's kind of a truism...

I think a great many people would be disappointed in what builds LL would consider worth saving vs what builds residents consider worth saving as "National Treasures."

If you think it's worth saving - donate tier to it. Otherwise all you're doing is whining about something you got for free going away.

Actually, this would be a great compromise! I'd love to see many of the great things supported and at least having them on the beta grid would not only save them, but encourage people to use the beta grid.
