Strife, you're a star :)

Thanks for this - finally got round to downloading it for the PC and it's great!

Now /me wonders if it will work on the Mac at home...

Should, nothing about it that is PC specific (that I know of), just Firefox specific (it probably won't run in Greasemonkey clones).

New version, shrinks long URLs and strips img tags where appropriate (otherwise the text of the tag gets displayed). You can download it from:
http://home.comcast.net/~mailerdaemon/bbcodeintext.user.js

Using Strife's BBCode Greasemonkey Script in Opera
07-13-2007 20:19
Here's what I did to use Strife's BBCode in Opera:

I created a folder in My Documents called "Opera User Javascript". (no quotes)

I copied Strife's script into the "Opera User Javascript" folder with the filename bbcodeintext.user.js

I did Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options, and selected the folder I created in the first step above, where I had just put the the bbcodeintext.user.js file.

I accessed Opera's config settings, which I did by pasting opera:config into the address bar and pressing enter.

I put "user javascript on https" into the search box, no quotes, which brings up the "User Javascript On HTTPS" settings.

I put a check in the checkbox.

I clicked the Save button.

Opera users, please let me know if this doesn't work and I'll see if I can fix it up to where it does.

Note: you should be able to go to the correct Opera config section by copying opera:config#UserPrefs|UserJavaScriptonHTTPS and pasting it into the address bar and pressing enter.

Thank You to SuezanneC for posting the configuration steps for Opera. I followed her instructions, with the only exception being: as an additional last step, to allow the new configuration to take affect, I closed Opera then re-opened it.

Thanks SuezanneC and Strife !

Posted a new version, this one handles URLs better and slightly smarter parsing for images. SLex links should work now.

And, yes, YAY! I can confirm it will work with Firefox on a Mac as well :D

This javascript has stopped working in the Opera 9.5 beta.

I can't see any reason why, or any mention of a problem with user javascript in the comments about the beta.

Good question. I can see 3 URL's in your signature.

Just did the latest Opera 9.5 snapshot upgrade and now I this script is working again.

Sensual, you have sl-forums.com in your signature - that url goes to a "parking the url" search engine site now. Your urls in your signature don't work for me.

maybe just enclosing the url with the bbcode, like

[ u r l ] http://sl-forums.com [ / u r l ] , without the spaces, would work.

The script requires BBCode to be properly nested and balanced. I considered making it smart enough to identify improper nesting but decided that would require too much work and frankly I don't like encouraging bad coding. That said it does support some bastardized BBCode as it is. I've tried to support most peoples sigs.

Me too. When I saw that Cristalle did it, I figured that she's smarter than me, so if she did it, I should too. :)

Just uploaded a new version with a tiny fix that should remove extraneous spaces from urls that vBulletin insists on inserting.

This appears to work in the Flock browser. Instructions are just the same as for Firefox.

Flock on.

Suez that Flock browser you mentioned. I've never heard of it, so i took the liberty of looking it up. Before i download to try, do you know which engine it uses? (IE, Mozilla, opera, exc) I hope it isn't IE. I've disabled IE on all my computers. Can't stand how vulnerable it is.
