From: Scylla Rhiadra Yeah, I KNOW they are different. For one thing, I f**king despise APA. I can't STAND parenthetical references inserted into the middle of a text:
"As noted by renowned expert Jig Chippawa (_To Hal with You All_ 2008, p. 27), the Residents Answers forum is an enormous waste of time, and, moreover, a lousy way to pick up guys (79)."
I really hate that MLA has gone this way too,
And I did NOT start this! As for lunch in Yorkville, the really HIP restaurants (Chippawa, "What Is Hip," Post #51) are now in MY area of Toronto anyway. I'm not exactly a fan of APA either. It is really uncomfortable citing websites as reference in APA, since websites generally don't have page numbers; but it's what my school uses, and thus what I have used exclusively for the last 2+ years, so it is what I'm most comfortable with right now. Chicago... Does anybody outside of high school still use that style?

Chicago... Does anybody outside of high school still use that style? Some scholarly journals do, I think. I've always been required to use MLA, because it seems to be the standard in the arts. I think citing web sites is always going to be a nightmare, in any style. And the more so because "web site" can now mean things as diverse as electronic texts, blogs, listservs and . . . yes, forums!

From: Jig Chippewa I prolly know much more about this than Pep but I just dont let him know that. Probably not . . . Pep ( . . . but if your belief makes you happy, who am I to puncture your balloon?)

I believe that the most critical aspect of referencing is to get the name of the author correct. Pep (otherwise it's pointless, and even insulting.)

From: Scylla Rhiadra I can assure you that London is definitely NOT Hip. Not even a bit. On the contrary, London is the single most significant source of "hip". Halifax is most definitely *not* "hip"! Pep (and you should be more careful with the completeness of your references; the original need not be differentiated, but all copies should have their locations indicated.)

From: Jig Chippewa I also despise APA and it always reminds me of trash cans in sad alleyways for some reason. MLA has indeed gone down the drain this year - I was sadly disappointed in its recent changes. I think Queen Street has some pretty Hip places BUT I prefer The Danforth when I am in TO. Hip are cool Sikh restaurants. Lets be honest and say that maybe Hip are now restaurants and bars in Hamilton (up around Mac or environs and in Hamilton main with the new gallery), London ON, and even further afield than that. Halifax is Hip. I thought I was ahead of the wave eating in Sikh restaurants in London in the early 80's . . . Pep ( . . . but I'd never have guessed then that Canada would take a quarter of a century to catch up. )

Serious academic institutions refuse to allow references to websites or any other ephemeral sources which can not be reliably replicated.
