Transcript available: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SL5B/Transcripts#Closing_Keynote_-_2008-07-07Now you can *see* statements like From: someone So the first is, in the earliest wave of pioneers in any new disruptive platform, the marginal and the dispossessed are over represented, not the sole constituents by any means but people who feel they don't fit, who have nothing left to lose or who were impelled by some kind of dream, who may be outsiders to whatever mainstream they are coming from, all come and arrive early in disproportionate numbers. And From: someone And what do we do with all this power to imagine and actually create a world. For all the fascination we have with the power of technology, I have come to believe ultimately it is what is in our hearts that determines the uses and the impact And so this is my point, it is really a choice to work to make things better, just as it is a choice to do things which have a negative impact. And so I want to encourage all of us to see the opportunities and to raise above kind of pettiness and personal complaint and to reach for the best and highest within ourselves in making what we can of this opportunity. Negative customer feedback = Petty. Woo Hoo.

"the marginal and the dispossessed" LL couldn't care less about their creative "pioneers." Now they will try to bribe them with a booby prize of some fake money pitance, that they can just coin. It's scummy. SL jumped the shark and whatever future it has will just be tainted with scams and rampant nonsense. But they don;t care. That is why they have been trying to give it all away after they make their money. Now drink their poison Kool-Aid

Actually, I don't surpect any of LL's "Pioneers" would be the ones they'd offer such an award to. I see it more going to outsiders coming in to make the toys Mitch wants. The real question: when does the "clarification" of Mitch's speech hit the blog?

The real question: when does the "clarification" of Mitch's speech hit the blog? The way I read it, it was *definitely* not for the "oldschool pioneers", but *specifically* for the new "pragmatists" who could find something *intelligent* to use the platform for.

I agree, but it is a verbal ploy to associate the creative "pioneers" with this act of hypocritical benevolence. Really I saw all this coming and the pathetic thing is that they will not be held accountable by their user base, because the user base won't have the courage to unite, walk out and leave them with their scammers paradise of the future. Its all a big con-job. I am going to dump my 2+ year premium account right now. It's done. Im tired of caring about it. It's a misuse of what could be a technology to help the "human condition" They really only care about their own financial condition and pretending they are visionaries. They are not visionaries, they are imbeciles.

From: Marianne McCann The real question: when does the "clarification" of Mitch's speech hit the blog? Oh yes.. expect it. Or it will just be left as is like when Philip made his slap at us: From: someone Asked to explain the appeal of Second Life — which has no game-like aspects such as points-scoring, winners or losers — Rosedale said: “The only thing that SL users have in common is that they have a lot of time.” Users in big cities such as New York or Los Angeles were least likely to spend time in Second Life, not only because they were busy but because they had less need to escape to an alternative, anonymous world, he said.
“Bad weather, oppressive regimes, poor economic conditions — that’s what makes an SL user.”
http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/04/21/new-linden-ceo-could-be-named-within-weeks/I don't recall anyone official back peddling his latest brain fart then.

I can certainly see how 3D avatar touch and feel, as Mr Kapor envisages it, will enhance inworld teaching that requires hands-on work. That would really useful.
While corporates may find it, umm! more corporate, to use the RL avatars, I think many students will get bummed out if the school they goto enforces the uniform code and they have to goto class dressed as themselves.
Still, Mr Kapor was talking from the heart about his vision. And thats kool too. He's also a techie so he wasn't overselling it I don't think. Not to any other techie listening he wasn't =)
As for LL/sl being the future platform for the b2b metaverse? hmm! I thought I saw a set of triplets on IBM/sl today.

I would have thought you would have loved this. It is right up your alley. Telling all of us that we have been using SL wrong. But there is no changing the "human condition", not out of charity and benevolence anyway. The driving force behind human advancement has always been and will always be greed. We aren't evolving toward some rainbow filled world of sugar drops and moonbeams like you seem to desperately want.

After reading that... I can almost understand where the mindset came from to [respectfully decline] child avatars. Here's my own condensed version of what I see: From: someone Get real or get out. Sorry pal... I'm here to stay! (^_^)y

The real question: when does the "clarification" of Mitch's speech hit the blog? Just as soon as Torley can come up with a line of BS powerful enough to try to obscure the WORDS Mr. Kapor used and the utter disdain he holds for the people that MADE SL. Might be a bit, but It'll come.

Might be a bit, but It'll come. They have Torley busy working on the videos on how to perform open heart surgery simulations in Second Life as we speak. Or maybe how to do a hostile takeover of a company using your avatar.
