http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6945425.stmClassical music lovers around the world will be able to sit in a "virtual" hall to listen to an online performance by a leading orchestra. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic will perform what is billed as the first professional music concert in a "virtual online world". An orchestra spokesman said it was important to explore and embrace new technologies and audiences. The cyber event will be seen by visitors to Second Life website. An orchestra spokesman said it was important to explore and embrace new technologies and audiences. The cyber event will be seen by visitors to Second Life website. Liverpool Philharmonic chief executive Michael Elliott said: "Orchestras today are committed to reaching out to make their music more accessible to encourage new audiences. "That means exploring and embracing the opportunities presented by new technology. For us Second Life allows us to tap into a potential global audience. "It's also a lot of fun and it certainly adds a different dimension to the more traditional visit to a concert hall." The event is planned for 14 September. Question... anyone know anything about this? Broccoli

Apparently, they don't realize the limitations of SL regarding the number of concurrent AV's in any given sims. I predict a big reality check barrelling down on the organizers...

Don't know anything about it but i am very impressed and would love to be there.
Do we need to buy tickets or is it free entry on a first come first served basis?

I have no idea, I only copied the article from the BBC website sorry. I would hope that the developers handling this build would be sensible enough to mention silly things like "avatar limits on a region" before all this began production. It seems to have been done by an organisation called "Fusion Unity" which I've never heard of before. From their website: "Second Life is a registered trademark of Linden Labs - and we are so very greatful for ther help and vision to develope the idea of Second Life." *snort* spelcheck anyone? Seems like it's "ticket only" ... http://www.liverpoolphil.com/content/HomePageFeatures/SecondLife.aspxBroccoli

It does seem they realize there is an avatar limit as the site states there are limited spots. I registered so hopefully i will win a ticket (fingers crossed).

From: Brenda Connolly Depending on what the program is I may look into it. Website lists: Kenneth Hesketh A Rhyme for the Season (world premiere) (5 mins) John McCabe Symphony Labyrinth (world premiere - BBC commission) (20 mins) Ravel Shéhérazade (19 mins) Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances (35 mins) Vasily Petrenko conductor Kate Royal soprano Vasily Petrenko opens his second season as the RLPO’s youngest ever and first Russian Principal Conductor with a welcoming flourish from the orchestra’s Liverpool-born Composer in the House and a new orchestral work from the prolific Huyton-born composer John McCabe. Labyrinth is inspired by Williamson's Tunnels in the Edge Hill district, and, says the composer, ‘is in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the city where I spent my early childhood’. Soprano Kate Royal, who has enjoyed a meteoric career since winning the 2004 Kathleen Ferrier Award, is the soloist in Ravel’s ravishing Arabian Nights-inspired song-cycle Shéhérazade. Rachmaninov originally titled his three Symphonic Dances, ‘Noon’, ‘Twilight’ and ‘Midnight’, underscoring his autobiographical intent by quoting the radiant Resurrection Hymn from his All-Night Vigil (to be performed on 28 February 200 . Tempting! I'll have to check the site and so forth.
It's encouraging to see more forays like this into SL.

It's encouraging to see more forays like this into SL. Whilst classical music isn't really my kind of thing... it does at least show that there is more to SL than sex and (previously) gambling, which is what the media tend to usually portray. Most of us, of course, are already aware that there's plenty more than that around - unfortunately those outside don't. Broccoli

Hehe yes, it's the typical "sandwich the unknown premiere with a well-known classic or two" approach to orchestral program design. Still, this one may be worth a look. Yep. It's perfectly understandable. Any opportunity foer new music to be heard is good. I've heard some real gems and some real duds this way ovre the years.

I've already signed up for my ticket. But they're doing it on a random lottery system. Here's the URL for the sign-up page: http://www.liverpoolphil.com/content/homepagefeatures/SecondLife.aspxCuriously it's being held in one of the Manchester sims.

Not the first time

Not true. They need to check their facts before making this claim. A US orchestra called Red [an orchestra] did this earlier this year (2007). Here's the link to the press info on their website: http://www.redanorchestra.org/news-details.cfm?Section=News&NewsID=28I was there. It was pretty cool. Princess Ivory

Thanks Broccoli, I have signed up hoping for a ticket myself. This is great, and a nice way to get SL further out there and to reach people who are not necessarily gamers or even use the internet much in general other than work.

You'd have thought the development company would have passed this out to the various SL media to let us know - I haven't seen any advertising at all about it and it's not really that far away timewise.
I just hope that they aren't showing SL on a 'big screen' at the meatspace event, and they get a visit from the same group responsible for the famous "Anshe Chung Penis Incident" ...

Avatar limit?
08-14-2007 13:04
Is there really a 40-avatars-per-region limit? And if so, is it something that can be got around any way?
