Hmm...doesn't get around the permissions issue, Guv'neh Shang. But I'm thinking they could be programmed to work only when within the same sim as the vendor. Must think further. @ Mr. Graves, thank you for the kind words, and glad you like the pony Must take a trip to Eldamar, it sounds like!

Thank you, everyone, for all your suggestions. I am going to follow up on every one of them. And Bucephalus and I would relish going on a Forum Cartel ride whenever it happened--- although frankly, I don't think I'm the one to organize it, since I still haven't found Caledon. (Serendipitously, I did find an almost perfect piece of property trying, though. SL magic at it's best! But that isn't enough to give me the reins... I'd be glad to help in any other way, though.) Last night I rode through the streets of Provence Coeur at sunset. I think exploring SL on horseback is going to be perfect...

From: Virrginia Tombola There might be a work around on this: I'm playing about with the idea of creating horses that only work in a specific sim designated by the owner (which should prevent someone from riding out with a freebie horse). Still, as I pay for my groceries with horse sales, I am very very cautious about this, and I am certain the other horse makers would be, too. I believe one of the horse vendor's demos work this way. Not sure if it's in the sim or in a particular parcel. Either way, I think it would be a great product to make available. Maybe the price point would be a bit higher, but the idea of making "loaner" horses available in certain locations would be worthwhile, I think, and could really enhance a properly build sim's recreation.

If you're still looking for places to ride you could always try to the northern shores of Lake Barrowdale, in the the Barrowdale sim. I have a couple of residents who love to trek through the mountains on horseback up that way.

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau ...since I still haven't found Caledon. One of the Caledon residents can give more precise info here, but just type in "Caledon" in Places on the Search tab, or bring up the world map, type in "Caledon" in the sim location and a whole vista of land will appear to which you can tp. From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau Last night I rode through the streets of Provence Coeur at sunset. I think exploring SL on horseback is going to be perfect... Sometimes on a whim we'll ride our horses wherever we happen to be (if it's empty...still want to be respectful to others)...inside large stores, etc. We had fun trying to navigate a circular staircase on horseback once!

Isle of Wyrms and the surrounding areas have some great parkland you could trek round. I think someone already mentioned Straylight. There's also the Beauty sims, which while famous for a different kind of pony, are very pretty and well laid out. When I was there it was very quiet with nothing eyebrow-raising going on Probably not a good place to take the kids, but unlikely to cause offence to the broad-minded. <<edit>> My apologies, there is a dress-code and code of conduct for those sims.

I realize this is a bit different than the above group of "ponies" but it reminded me of one of the first rides I took when I purchased my first steed. It was on the riding trails of the horse farm I still can't recall the name of (I really have to start going inworld before posting...lol). Anyway...I see a green dot approaching and hear clip-clopping so assume another rider is approaching. And there was...sort of. She was the first centaur I'd seen in SL.

From: Nika Talaj I have the inverse question. If your home is near a nice place to ride, and you would like to be able to "loan" a horse to guests who don't have their own horse, is there any solution? We have a corral full of horses, but we're the only ones who can ride them! (all of them are notrans).
Most of the horsemakers have clever solutions to this for their demos ... only good for a number of rezzes or a period of time. I would love, for example, to be able to buy a horse that I could make trans copies of, each of which was not copiable and deleted itself after 4 hours. . The first horses in SL were like that, you could make as many copies as you wanted, but after an hour they would poof if the owner was not on it's back... the change to how it is now came about when they started being attachments rather then vehicles.

From: Virrginia Tombola You're not the first person to ask about something like that, Nika, and I've been thinking about solutions but so far my bubblebrain hasn't come up with one.
A demo vendor is set up by the merchant, so that's easy enough to get the permissions right on. But for me to give you a horse that you could give out more than once, I'd have to send it copy AND transfer. Now, it would be no mod with X number of rezzes , but if you give this copy/transfer item to someone and they don't use it up, they could also give out an unlimited number of horses (I thiiiiink....permissions make my head hurt to be honest)
There might be a work around on this: I'm playing about with the idea of creating horses that only work in a specific sim designated by the owner (which should prevent someone from riding out with a freebie horse). Still, as I pay for my groceries with horse sales, I am very very cautious about this, and I am certain the other horse makers would be, too. I actually just resolved this very problem with a product line i'm working on that was trying to serialize in an external database but because SL constantly changes keys had no anchor to be properly communicating with the database... while your not working with a database, the solution would work for you aswell. if your curious on the solution for it send me an IM in game.
