Two ways turning off typing animation?

I sell a Scroll and Quill Typing animation that I made. If anyone has a different idea for one, let me know.

I've seen that used by a hobbit. It's very cute.

Seagel Neville uses something similar: a clipboard and what looks like a biro but I don't know if it's an item he sells.

What I'd like to see in the chat channel is the "xxx is typing" wordage that's used on the IM channels. That, I think, would solve the problem of people getting upset while waiting for a response in chat.

The problem with that is sometimes "xxx is typing" gets hung up despite the fact xxx isn't typing at all.

I'd like to go a step further and turn off that nod the av does just as I hit return to say whatever. Anyone know a way to do that?

That typing animation just breaks my immersion in Second Life--it's distracting. I don't like it.

I'm patient, so I wait for someone to type his or her response. I don't assume they're being rude if they have the animation off.
I don't assume they're ignoring me

Only if I have to wait a long, long time for their response do I assume there's something wrong (e.g., lag, afk for some reason, etc.).

The only time I interpret an avatar's behavior as rude is when they don't respond to me and fly or walk off.

What I'd like to see in the chat channel is the "xxx is typing" wordage that's used on the IM channels. That, I think, would solve the problem of people getting upset while waiting for a response in chat.

The Mystitool tells you what the people around you are doing. (T)=Typing, (W)=Walking, (F)=Flying, etc. Only thing is it doesn't tell you they are necessarily typing to you. They could be immersed in IM with someone else while you stand there waiting for a response. It's somewhat handy though.

Otter Monitor puts a "*" next to people who are typing, if you have a recent enough version (like, hmmm... at least the past year).

Unfortunately if they turn off the typing animation, then devices like the Mysti tool don't get the update and can't tell you the person is typing. (overriding it with an alternative animation doesn't do this, just turning it off completely.)

I've always thought that the typing animation was annoying and was very happy when I discovered that it could be turned off. I've looked for alternative animations and, at least for me, they range from "just as annoying" to "much worse".

I encountered the "look like your talking when you type" animation just last night and until I figured out what it was I thought that the person was using voice and then typing too which made no sense since it was just the two of us and I never have voice enabled.

No, I'd much rather just wait to see what people say than watch them type or play an alternative animation and be subjected to the tappity noises while they do.

Pity they couldn't turn it around in how this is implemented then - in other words, have the setting determine whether *you* see the typing animation and hear the sound, regardless of anyone else's settings. The way it works now is the setting only determines what your viewer sends / doesn't send to everybody else.

In other words, for folks who don't like the typing thing, they could disable their viewer from rendering it for themselves and everyone else, but for those who do like the typing thing, then they could leave it turned on for themselves and everyone else. That way everyone gets the experience they want.

The current setup means that people who don't like it still get subjected to it from other folks, and those who do like it don't see it from those who dislike it...

For what it's worth, my understanding of the system is that when you start typing in chat, the viewer sends a packet which is basically a 'start typing' indicator, then when the chat has finished, the viewer sends a packet which is a 'stop typing' indicator. These indicators are what tell the viewers in range that said avatar is typing (this is what the Mysti and other scanners detect.) If you have disabled typing in your viewer, I'm pretty sure that it simply does not send those two packets, so the other viewers around you don't play the tappatappa noise and don't render the typing animation.

My alt has a crystal ball that appears when she types. She runs her hands over it in a summoning gesture and letters float around it. :D

Oooooooh.....where did you get it?

That is just TOO sensible of an idea. Given the way you explain the start typing and stop typing packets it seems like it would not be all that difficult to implement.

Creator is Feras Nolan, he has his shop as first of his picks. Since he has it reopened apparently, I have no idea right now if he still has the orb for sale. Good luck, it is a highly cool thing.

I seem to recall reading about a gadget that puts a cartoon chat bubble over your head when you are typing. Anyone know what I'm talking about or where I might find it?

I have stand animations in my AO that override typing. Newbies are constantly walking away from me as I type a response. Now I type a fast reply like "Well..." and then I type the rest of my message. I like that idea of client side typing disabling.

The default typing animation is just plain stupid looking to me. I have a 'writing in book' animation and a set of hand puppets that look like they are talking. But I don't like them all the time and I have to turn the setting on and off to use them and that is a pain.

I usually type fast enough that folks usually think I am ignoring them. If I have a lot to say, I will break up the sentences.

Same here. I haven't found an alternate typing animation that I like. If people don't want to talk with me because I don't wave my hands around like I'm having a fit, I will just have to find a way to deal with it. Oh, the shame... (sob)
I have a throwing fit / waving arms around animation - I like it.

Maybe I should figure out how to substitute that one in for typing.
:D

I disabled my typing animation because I thought it looked goofy, on me. It's perfectly fine if others wish to use it. :)

In a one-on-one conversation, held in open chat, I'll sometimes enable "chat bubbles" - that way, I can see if my chat companion is composing a response or is otherwise occupied.

I know I am guilty of longish responses :o ...and am working on breaking them up into more manageable pieces of text.

If the person you're talking to has disabled typing animations, do the chat bubbles come up while they are typing?

+1! :D

I like knowing when people are talking. But we all have to deal with situations where we can't know anyway (e.g., when a sit or AO anim is too high priority for the typing anim to show). So, it's a matter of personal preference. I do wish there was a better way to know whether someone was typing. An asterisk in their nametag would be nifty (as an option!)

As an animator, I usually make anims so that typing doesn't show unless it looks natural for the pose. However, I occasionally find I've omitted a wrist joint setting, and see one hand flapping where it wasn't intended. Sometimes it adds an amusing feature, though! ;)

In any case, I use a version of ZAHO that supports typing anim override, and I use VISTA's override anim that gesticulates. Folks seem to get the idea pretty quickly.

Break your sentences ...

into short, manageable phrases ...

with a few dots at the end of each ...

to show you're still talking.

That way ...

you don't have to look like ...

you're practising air-piano.
Haha, long ago, I was in the habit of doing that, and lost an SL job interview due to "inadequate communications" (from a French speaker whose command of the English language was amusing, to put it lightly). Ah, well.

This is what I do. In particular, if I have to type out something long, I break out a short introductory part followed by and ellipse...

...so that the other person is aware that I'm composing something.

I turned off my typing animation very early in my life because I found the image of someone typing into thin air a bit - well, weird and noobish.

Thanks Keira, but I'm not a Tiny. If the text in the bubble is modifiable that would work, otherwise...

Permissions are listed as copy, mod, so should be workable.

It's the only one I really found with a quick search, most are afk bubbles and whatnot.

Not sure how feasible that would be, particularly if you're standing in a room full of talkative people. The "xxx is typing" messages would overwhelm the screen if you're at an infohub.

Something that would be feasible, and shouldn't be hard to implement since the mechanism is already in place is to have (Typing) appear in the person's tag, just like (Busy) and (Away) do now.

Thanks...he still had it and I love it :)
He has other typing overrides too, one is being a painter and the other, chiseling it out on a stone tablet...too cute :D
