Two ways turning off typing animation?

I had been told two different ways to turn off the typing animation.

1. Preferecnes/textchat/play typing animation

2. Advanced/debug setting/playtypeanim

What is the difference between these two? Am I supposed to do both?

I'm pretty sure they both do the same thing (i.e. you only need to do one.) It's just that, prior to the option being added to preferences, the only way to do it was through debug settings.

Most of the "Advanced Debug Settings" are just the internal XML-file names for regular preference settings.

god I hate when people turn it off... I never will... I say something or ask something of a av and if I see no typing motion I figure they are afk or speak another language or simply rude so I move on and ignore them.

I'm with Toy on this one, for two reasons. (1) Only one of my AO's four standing anims/poses allows the typing animation. I'm often discussing something with a customer, who can't see when I'm typing. I feel that they must think I'm ignoring them or something like that. (2) I don't like to walk away when someone is typing something to me - especially customers who are usually strangers. But at the end of discussions, I have to do exactly that when someone's typing anim doesn't operate. I wait a few seconds to see if they are tying something further, but then I have to move off. Sometimes they were typing and I turn back again, but seeing it would make it much smoother.

Mine's turned off. But my blazing speed has saved me from appearing rude in our encounters...I think.

Are you in that much of a hurry that you can't wait a few seconds for a response?

I wouldn't mind the lack of the animation, but it also mutes the tappety-tappety sound. So there's no visual cue and also no audible cue that the other person is responding. Then their words appear 'by magic' in the chat window and I sometimes miss it, then I look rude because I didn't notice their response.

It also makes me think of ESP or something... like they are magically beaming their words into my head without having to 'say' / type them.

Anyhow, I won't say I 'hate' when people disable the typing animation, but I get uncomfortable because I don't know if they're talking or not, so I don't know if I should be talking, or if the conversation is over, or hasn't begun, etc etc. and it's hard enough figuring that stuff out under normal circumstances.

Break your sentences ...

into short, manageable phrases ...

with a few dots at the end of each ...

to show you're still talking.

That way ...

you don't have to look like ...

you're practising air-piano.

True Lindal hehe I have a small PDA attatchment that makes me appear to be using it as my typing animation, there's ways to make the typing motion creative

Mine's off. I don'y mind what others do, either way. Makes no difference.

Mine's off....but I'm not rude by nature....it just annoys me.....especially the sound and the way it interupts other animations. I also can't stand the snapshot animation

But...I do have a cool writing tablet thingy that I can use instead.....but of course the feature has to be turned on in order for the writing tablet to perform.

Now there's a thought too......there ought to be more interesting and fun animation gadgets to make the typing anim. a little more unique to your avatar....and not so invasive or otherwise annoying. Could be a fun challenge for all you scripters/creators out there.

I have mine off also, for the same reason Milla stated, it interferes with other animations.

You need have a little patience with us slow typists who have to go back and correct their mispellings.

I made a steampunk keyboard that materializes under your hands when you're typing. I think it's in the "freebie ring" giver in the Coonspiracy store in Noonkkot...

I turned mine off just recently because it was driving my neighbors crazy that I hadn't.... lol.

There is a cue; "Doomsday Sorbet is typing..." appears while composing a longer message.

Same here. I haven't found an alternate typing animation that I like. If people don't want to talk with me because I don't wave my hands around like I'm having a fit, I will just have to find a way to deal with it. Oh, the shame... (sob)

Use a voice animation as your typing animation and play with people's heads.

Edit: and a typing animation for your voice animation.

I'm not in-world to check, but I think if you disable the snapshot sound using Advanced menu > Quiet Snapshots to Disk, it will also disable the snapshot animation.

How about that Star Trek "tap your chest icon to activate the communicator" gesture?

(something you'll never see on Star Trek:

"Computer, locate Captain Picard"

"The Captain is taking a pit stop, can it wait?"

My alt has a crystal ball that appears when she types. She runs her hands over it in a summoning gesture and letters float around it.

*LOL* @ the snapshot anim. It's annoying to me, now, that I have an understanding of what the avatar consists of; in the beginning, I thought it was cute, and was the only (first) way I knew Treasure had teeth, and damn pretty teeth, too!

That typing animation just breaks my immersion in Second Life--it's distracting. I don't like it.

I'm patient, so I wait for someone to type his or her response. I don't assume they're being rude if they have the animation off.

Only if I have to wait a long, long time for their response do I assume there's something wrong (e.g., lag, afk for some reason, etc.).

The only time I interpret an avatar's behavior as rude is when they don't respond to me and fly or walk off.

What I'd like to see in the chat channel is the "xxx is typing" wordage that's used on the IM channels. That, I think, would solve the problem of people getting upset while waiting for a response in chat.
