From: Wildefire Walcott Oh and there's an obvious alt user who frequents my money tree. The entire avatar name is only different by one character, and if you look in my transactions history one always follows the other. This person never talks to anyone though. What is wrong with this? Are money trees a one per (RL) person things, or a means for building traffic?

From: Amity Slade There's nothing inherently wrong with creating an alt (in fact, Linden Labs allows for it to a certain limit), and there is nothing inherently wrong with using Second Life for roleplaying, and there is nothing inherently if you use different alts to associate with the same person even if that person doesn't know the real-life connection between the alts.
But if you know that a particular person does not want a friendship/romance with someone who uses alts like you do, but you do it with that person anyway, you are just dishonest and uncaring, and that's all there is to it. Either (a) admit the connection between the alts, or (b) stop associating with that person using your various alts, or (c) continue being a jerk because there's no law against being a jerk. I'd say these are valid points. The most disturbing possibility is probably the case where a "dumped" friend tries to come back into the dumpers life as a "different" av, primarily to seek vengeance. If this was the OP case, then there's quite a different approach needed.

From: Tid Kidd Tidd Kidd: "What's going on here?" Tid Kidd: "It's a discussion about alts" Tidd Kidd: "Ooh, what's an alt?" Tide Kidd: "It's another avatar created by an existing resident" Tid Kidd: "And a lot of people here are talking some of the biggest load of rubbish you ever heard" Tide Kidd "But you can say that - you're only an avatar, so no-one is going to take offence in RL are they?" Tid Kidd: "Oh but some people think an avatar is just an extension of a RL self" Tidd Kidd: "But surely, some people are exploring and role-playing aren't they? Tide Kidd: "Oh you mean like a mixture of reality, fiction, exaggeration, fantasy, all rolled into one?" Tid Kidd: "And THAT's the most sensible thing anyone has said here yet!" Tide Kidd: "But you won't get the 'avatars are just pixels' people to agree with it, so you're on a loser there from the start" Tidus Kidd: "Listen folks, why don't we just say that there are as many approaches to the SL experience as there are unique residents?" Tid Kidd: "Only don't forget to add to that number..." Tidus Kidd: "Add to?" Tid Kidd: "Yes, the residents who successfully manage to play two or more distinct personalities within SL, and no-one sees they're the same person" Tidd Kidd: "And, don't forget the alts that are identical to another resident and no-one can tell them apart!" Tide Kidd: "Single White Female? Oo-er..." Tidd Kidd: "Why did no-one respond to the post you spent so much time on?" Tid Kidd: "It's like I told you - people are simply too busy shooting off their pet theories to pay much attention, and far too busy looking for something to irritate them." Tide Kidd sighs Tidus Kidd: "And British irony is WASTED in these forums anyway..." Tidd Kidd: "Let's all go for a drink! Whose round is it?" Tid Kidd: "Not mine, I paid last time" Tide Kidd: "You never! It was me!!" Tidus Kidd: "Hold on, just WHOSE is the main account here? Don't forget who keeps you all in cash around these parts. Any more arguments, no more transfers..."

I had an alt who was dating a guy who was also my alt. He would sign in, she wasn't around, and vice versa. Finally they/we/I got so pissed that he/she/I wasn't around when she/I/he was, that he/I/she left him/me/her.
Now I just refuse to speak to myself.. it's way less aggravation.

From: Oryx Tempel The more I read of Lindal, the more I respect her. I was just thinking about how much some of her posts really get me to do some deep thinking.

Hmmmm. I had someone accuse me of being an alt the other day. I just don't get why. People are so suspicious these days. Jeez.

Creating an alt for business, consensual RPing, or group functions is completely different then creating an alt to fuck with someone emotionally.
Creating an alt is a completely legitimate use of the platform.
Creating an alt to be an asshole isn't.
See the difference?
Tid/Tidd/Tidus wins my vote for Best Poster to this Thread.

This forum isn't for general discussion; there are many Resident Sites where this discussion is appropriate — Resident Answers is for Resident-to-Resident help. I'll close this thread...
