Should I feel sad that I received a negative rating?

I looked on SLX today and I got a couple votes less than 5 stars :(

No negative feedback though. I felt very....sad but I realize it could very well be someone thinking I'm cutting into their wedding business.

What do you guys do when you get negative ratings, I guess there is no way to know who left it?

I will now ask the required stupid question. What is SLX?

If the person gives a reason for the poor review, consider it useful feedback; perhaps you can use it to improve your product or make better ones in the future. I sell some one-prim statues on SLX and OnRez, and somebody was unhappy with the fact that they are just pictures rather than 3D prim sculpture; I took that to heart, and made the description more clear so people know what they are buying. And I gave the poster of the negative review a refund, because he had a legitimate complaint. (The original complaint is gone now -- not because I wanted to purge it, but because I had to re-create my SLX inventory due to a magic box problem.)

If they don't give a reason, or just say your product is not to their taste, live with it. You are never going to please all the people all the time.

1. It's impossible to satisfy everybody all the time
2. Negative reviews/votes are usually born out of (ligitimate?) frustration with a product, removing the frustration is 90% of fixing the problem.
3. It's better to have 300 4 star votes then 2 five star votes.
4. The creator is 9 out of 10 times the biggest critic, seeing every little negative thing as an affirmation of their own slanted perspective.
5. Negative constructive feedback is often 10 times more useful than general positive feedback.

Happy selling ;)

I admit, I'm usually pretty cool with the negative feedback, if it's constructive. I've learned more from a good critique than from "Ooooh, that's pretty!"

And yes, most creators are their own harshest critics. I have my husband look my more 'doubted' pieces over before finishing them, because sometimes, it's really hard to just step back and look at the item from the 'outside' when you've been paying attention to the details.

I have no idea what the stars mean at SLX. I got a 3 star rating from someone, lovely write up though so I consider that more important than the rating.

I just hate it when people give a bad rating or review that has nothing to do with the product itself, or when they misunderstand the product and bad-rate it without ever contacting the creator for help. I see this all the time on Amazon, too, actually.

A friend of mine got a negative vote and a nasty IM because the media texture he was giving away FREE as FULL PERM would not give the buyer full media rights to land he did not own. My friend offered to refund him the $L0 LOL

You have to take into account the intellect level of some customers when you get rated :)

Just thank your lucky stars you don't need to actually deal with them face to face in RL.

I'm glad to get any feedback at all. I wish we could get feedback to items sold in-world too. I suppose you could ask for it but I think that would be too bothersome for most.

No I don't think you should feel sad if you receive a negative rating. If your product receives all negative ratings then I think you need to seriously take a look at your product.

And with all that...what would I focus on? The one or two people who said something negative.
I'm a professor IRL and it took several years of experience before I stopped doing that.

Well I only have gotten ratings on the freebies I have on SLX, and most ratings are 5 stars. Just one person rated a freebie table with 3 stars instead of 4-5, and I did find that weird. I mean, it is a freebie! What can be wrong with a free table that looks exactly like the picture?

Myself, if I am happy with what I purchased, I give 5 stars. Because I know many people use those stars in a decision to buy the product, so the more 5 star ratings the more chance a merchant has in selling the item. Only if a product I buy does not do what it promises for example, I rate less then 5.

If someone buys my stuff on SLX and wants to be helpful, I much rather have an IM or an SLX review then 3 stars. The stars don't tell me what to improve, only make it harder for me to sell the item as people might think it has flaws. Not if the 3 stars are in the good company of 25 high ratings of course ;)

My few linden, Marcel

Recently after much putting off voting and clearing that page I did it.
I must confess those I didn't give 5 is because I used the product more then once or couldn't figure it out.
Truthfully at one point I just didn't bother with where the star was at just wanted it gone off the page.
It wasn't slam on the creator their product just wasn't that rememberable to me.
I make things too but I don't sell them because I am perfectionist, none of my stuff is yet to standards I want them to be. Then there is dealing with customers...its okay if its one on one thing for specific thing but it might become a nightmare if it becomes hundreds of customers all wanting something from me.
Truthfully its not my idea of good time.
I think though it might bug me if someone left critical comment or vote if I did sale stuff.
I am texture artist, there is little to no real protections and I am just not interested in dealing with system.
Personal I hadn't really thought about the creators in the product page I was voting on just got tired of looking at it.
I didn't remember or some of products I could never to get to work or soon as I used it they got all messed up with me tinkering.
Also for someone who doesn't really shop much and has hard time finding things in folder....
Lot of times it doesn't just show up or the folder doesn't open the folder, and if you're inexperienced with this its often very confusing how to retrieve the items from inventory.
For those who don't have this problem or can figure it out easier, it may not be big deal but to those of us who aren't too bright about this we assume we never got product or can't retrieve what is in folder.
It may have shown up but the user doesn't for whatever reason know or is able to find it due to numerous factors, often involving inexperience, lag, asset server issues.

Thanks for all the responses. As I said I'd love some feedback. I'm like crazy with this hobby....I'm doing this for free and I stress over every detail and personal attention when it comes to people's weddings.

You shouldn't feel sad. You should feel outraged and should thirst for vengeance.
