Should I feel sad that I received a negative rating?

I looked on SLX today and I got a couple votes less than 5 stars :(

No negative feedback though. I felt very....sad but I realize it could very well be someone thinking I'm cutting into their wedding business.

What do you guys do when you get negative ratings, I guess there is no way to know who left it?

Don't feel sad.

I don't hand out 5 star ratings on SLX very often. My usual is about 4, unless the product is truly delightful. I won't go to three or less, though, unless there's something actually disappointing about it.

(BTW, I'm not talking about your stuff. I don't think I've ever bought anything from you. Yet, anyway.)

I was upset for about 10 mins. Then it dawned on me that I cannot please everyone, everytime.

The positives I get FAR outweigh any negative feedback I have had from my products. I just learn now to take the rough with the smooth and always try to improve on my items.

Is there an explaination of what the different number of stars mean? I took a quick look and didn't see anything but I certainly could have missed something.

Normally I think that 4-5 stars is good, 3 is neutral, and 1-2 stars is bad. I wouldn't worry about thinking that anything less that 5 stars a negative.

You need to have at least 3 people rate your product before it will show the stars that they chose.

You can't please everyone. I wouldn't be too upset about it. I myself would rather be upset about hours of hard work for third world country sweatshop wages. I myself very rarely rate something higher than 3 stars.

There are people who rate things negatively on SLX because they don't get its limitations. I've seen product demos get bad reviews on there just because they are demos. This could be a similar reaction. Random freebie seekers get peeved that what you listed is really a service, so there really isn't anything to "buy" (never mind that you do have it properly listed as a service). So, don't take those ratings or reviews for much unless the reviewer bothers to offer a substantive criticism.

QFT! I taught in an adult ed. computer department at a Junior College that also had corporate accounts. My feedback was generally always extremely positive, to the point that I was asked to be the "sample instructor" when we were trying to get a HUGE corporate account. (I live in the Orlando area...anyone guess? lol) We did get it. :)

And with all that...what would I focus on? The one or two people who said something negative.

I recently received a negative review from someone on SLX for a product he claims he did not receive 7 months ago, I tried to satisfy him, searched my sales records from 6 to 8 months ago and could find no record he purchased anything. I contacted him asking for help verifying his purchase, but gave up after his nasty response, see below. Some people are not worth the trouble.

I'm sorry you had a problem with a product delivery. I only today 3-10-08 stumbled across your comment. I do not recall ever hearing from you before this. I would be happy to send you the product if I can verify your purchase. I searched my sales records from 6 to 8 months back and can find no record of df buying anything. Please provide me with the transaction ID number and/or the exact date/time of the purchase so I can verify it, and I will be happy to send you the product.

To the OP: Everyone's opinion of what qualifies as a five-star product varies. I can't comment on yours unless I'd tried it myself (and I don't even know what it is).

I wouldn't rate many items as five-star unless they were perfectly designed, beautifully made, robustly scripted and thoroughly tested, and, to top it off, very well priced. Five stars is perfection, or as close to it as humanly possible. A must-have item with a bit of a 'wow-factor' that sets it apart.

Well-made items that do everything I expect get four stars. I give a lot of products three, not because there's anything wrong with them, but because there are loads of things that do the same, or look as good, for the same price. This might be a bit harsh, but I think of it like hotels: a five-star product needs the proverbial luxury suite with big-screen TV and lobster dinner.

Thanks all for your comments, I guess the fact that I've put so much into something that I offer for free makes it harder. It would be nice if people had left some comment about what they did not like. So far my only constructive criticism has been from me going around and seeing what others are doing.

Maybe you should charge a small amount. Some people think it is worth nothing unless they pay for it.

SLX has merchants who get alts/friends to uprate their product, and merchants whose jealous and angry competitors buy and downrate the product.

On one hand, customers really should account for low ratings, because it's rather cowardly to do otherwise. On the other hand, some merchants may be abusive to customers who write out a review that's anything less than perfect.

Some customers are fanboys and will five-star a product even if they notice flaws. Some customers will downrate a product while blaming the merchant for SL's fundamental limitations and flaws. Some customers will happily one-star a product if they send a message to the creator over a problem (which SL then eats) and claims to be ignored.

You get the idea. SLX ratings are a mess, so it's best not to really worry about it.

Verkin's point is very well-taken.

I once saw a freebie personal hovertext system on SLX that had been given a poor rating and negative review by someone who said "This sucks because it's no-mod! What use is a personal hovertext system if you can't modify it to personalize the text?" That user didn't understand that you change the text via chat commands, not by anything you need mod permissions for.

You can't always know why users give poor ratings; sometimes they just don't understand what the product is for or how it works.

I certainly wouldn't worry about a 4 rating, which hardly strikes me as a negative rating! I don't know what the item is, but I'd say all 4s and 5s is a pretty good showing.

FWIW, unless I've felt a product really did need some type of improvement, I've not left written feedback when rating something.

I also believe many people do not like to gratuitously hand out the highest rating available, even if they have no problems with a product - I've been guilty of that on occasion, where a product is "nice", but not "Great!!"...no complaints about the product, but nothing to rave about either.

Be happy you got some rating. :) Even though I regularly make sales on a daily basis on SLEX, most people seem they can't be bothered to even rate at all. I'd take 3 stars over nothing at all.

I have a little freebie house that has gotten some low-ish ratings and I finally understand why - the freebie teleporter that comes with it. A lot of people do not understand how to modify the notecard and reset the script. I should tinker with the script but I hadn't had the time, really, so that as the notecard changes the script would reset. It's not that hard, but I have discovered that some people don't understand the coordinate system (one source of problems), others think they need to mod the script (another source of problems).

I think I might yank that damned teleporter out and make them go get one! Feed the economy! lol.

You are right Arch. Some people can never be satisfied. Maybe he even had the wrong vendor. I had a similar problem in RL recently with a patron who claimed she never received her season tickets to our theatre. I searched all my records, and for the payment she said that was sent and had cleared her bank. She wasn't very nice in dealing with me, but I remained patient and said we would check all records. When I called her back the next day, I discovered it was another arts organization she was referring to..not us.
