my reply to Desmond's question is no, the court of public opinion is no good - because it can often be particularly bad.
Especially if someone resorts to stupid stupid name calling.

Doesn't it just seem like a rather bad idea, to bring an ethics issue to the table here?
I think a lot of folks who bring issues here end up, not with a rational discussion of the ethics involved, but with a good sense of how their opinion stacks up against the societal norms. Unfortunately, the society here in the forums is not necessarily completely representative of SL society; but many forum posters recognize that fact and give nods in the direction of that difference.

So, bottom line:I think it can be helpful for folks to reality test in the forums when they have a "wtf?"reaction to something that happened inworld.

But, as others have said, such threads invite personal opinions, so inevitably turn into a train wreck. But the first few pages are often useful, I think.

Your mother was a gerbil. And your father spent his time running on a wheel.

Someone had to start the name calling.

Did any one else find it odd that Des asked the court of public opinion if the court of public opinion was any good?

I believe it is. I rely on up to 3 forums, Twitter, and my own blog to get a better understanding on some subjects. (^_^)

Many here know that I was involved in a situation that I believed to be much larger than myself. Personally, I would have never been able to live with myself if I internalized the issue and made an arbitrary decision based on information limited to how I weigh the matters on my own. (>_<;)

So, I took it to two forums, in a very lengthy post, that was not without controversy. But, I don't regret a single word or action that came of it. In then end, multiple communities were allowed to speak and I was able to weigh my own decision based on the feedback I received. (^_^)

The result was surely imperfect, but, I think it was bound to be. In the end the community impact was minimal and I was able to go back to doing what I can and being what I am. (^_^)

If left to my own devices, I'm convinced the situation would have turned out to be FAR more disastrous. (>_<;)

That said: Thank you, Resident Answers, SLU, and my blog readers. (^_^)y

Okay Shang, what did you do and where did you do it?

There's a well-known Igbo proverb that goes something like this ... "when the child is talkative, the mother has one less waterpot"

You gotta hand it to the Japanese.

http://billsmovieemporium.wordpress.com/2009/07/06/review-heisei-tanuki-gassen-pompoko-pom-poko-1994/#

"The animation is beautiful, raccoon balls have never been displayed in more epic fashion."

http://www.xopl.com/blog/2006/01/26/tanookinuts.html#

"Pom Poko is an anime film from Japan about shape-shifting raccoons with magical balls."

I'm not making this up, you know!
