5 reasons SL sucks

SL sucks because I can't...

Teleport between sims, I crash if I try. I can teleport intra-sim, tho.

Import anything, thus no real building can happen.

I can't use Voice. It's turned on, been turned on for a long time. One day, it just stopped and never came back.

No Group chats, they all error out right after they start, and end with the error. The error has a button that I have to click 6-7 times before it will go away. At least I can get some of the Group chat in the History, but once the error sets in, it's all over.

I can't buy more than 1,000 Lindens at a time. If i try, I'm told I can't do that, go to the web site. I have to request 1,000 more than once if I want more Lindens.

I used to be able to do all those things, but not since last December 2007's update. I have the latest viewer, no ups no extras. I use a MacBook, OS X 4.11, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GBs RAM. I'm a Mac tech, so I keep my personal system maintained.

I used to pay for my SL account. Never again! So, of course I can't complain to the Lindens. I'm thinking they've done it all on purpose because I don't pay.

Yes, there's a faction in LL following the tenets of "Dorothyism" which is targetting all the Wheelers.


I take it you've tried the cache clear and relog bit? Have you tried a different viewer?

Those vengeful Lindens.......they got your number and will never let you be in peace again.

Is today "Whimsical Literary Reference Day"? I did not receive the memo

All I saw was 5 reasons SL sucks and some brief reasons why........not a request for help.

Clear cache, reboot your router and/or modem, check your payment information on file (for any mistake or change), call LL on the phone for your inability to purchase more than 1000 lindens at a time, try another viewer, uninstall your present viewer and reinstall again.

Have you tried the Mac forum here?
I have heard that there has been a Mac memory issue with SL. Check those forums.

Although I complain about many LL behavioral/ethical issues, I have to say in all fairness, that SL itself, is currently working pretty fine now on my $8000 Alienware ALX computer with Vista, since the Nvidia drivers were fixed some months ago.

For the most part it works, there are bad days and times for stability .. but considering the amount of stuff in the system that people own and create that is going to happen.





Hon, humanity has behavioral/ethical issues because none can agree on what is proper behavior or ethics.

Some places it's ethical and proper behavior to clear a plate to show you enjoyed it... and yet in others you want to leave just a little bit to show you were satisfied. Some take offense if they see the bottom of your shoe when you sit, and others they don't.

Why they suck for me right now...
I have a support ticket out to convert a regular estate to 4 open space sims. That costs 100 dollars. I cleared the sim in preparation for the conversion. Tomorrow will be the 15th day waiting for them to get to my support ticket. 15 days, half a month is $150 bucks of lost tier time. If you look at the land store and the estate management tab you'll see they changed some of the tier dates for the sims. They made some of my sims tier earlier than before. One 8 days, one 6 days earlier. Thats another half month or $150bucks lost tier. I'm not counting the sims that changed 2 or 3 days. So this month, because of waiting and tier date changes I'm down 300 bucks of tier and 100 for a service I'm paying to wait for. It's just a bit frustrating sometimes. I still love SL and all that it allows me to do. Just a little frustrated at a few things this month.

It happens to some, not all. I dont have that happen. Usually it is because of someone's computer or connection, but this isnt always the case

Mean you can import anything you like but you cant build? You have to go to places that allow build, like sandboxes.

Yeah, that happened to me too. I had to get a newer version of sl and it came back, but i never actually use voice much. I type mainly.

That happens to me too sometimes, but not always. I just click it once though and it goes away.

Odd. I have been able to buy 15000L at once. Though I try not to use my real money on here. Was just some left over birhtday money that i didnt kno what else to spend on.

Nah, must be some technial problems. Many people dont pay for the accont, myself included, and are doing fine.

Constructive feedback, in no particular order.

1. if you're using wireless... get an ethernet cable. Really, seriously.. SL and wireless are NOT a good combination. Wireless is officially "not supported" by SL's system requirements. One lost packet during a teleport and bam, you're in limbo. Same with sim crossings. Seriously... lose the "air".

2. Consider the possibility of running Linux and trying the linux client. Just to see if, perhaps.. it's an OS issue (which I highly doubt).

3. Consider your drivers. Did you update your sound card or sound drivers around the time that voice died? perhaps backtracking to an older set of drivers, might help.

4. consider buying lindens from another source. Ansche Chung, or SLExchange.com. The lindex has some really hard-to-live-with limits sometimes.. and you may have better luck on SLX. (that's where I sell my lindens, and people definitely seem to be buying there).

5. Visit the Ivory tower of prims, or other educational sites within Second life, and learn how to use SL's built-in building tools. As a moderately successful business owner, I can tell you that "importing" is NOT required to do ANY building in Second Life.. and while there are some cheesy workarounds to allow people to import models from Blender, and there was a rudimentary method for SketchUp.. the results aren't really any better than builds made inworld. (the only upshot in blender being that one can render "baked" lighting textures.. while those of us building in the sand, have to fake that.

6. one more regarding voice. Locate your settings files for SL (on a PC I know where they are, no idea about a mac).. when you uninstall the PC client, it deletes the program folder, but NOT the settinsg folder (with your settings files, chat logs, etc)... uninstall the client and delete that folder. Then reinstall. If voice doesn't come back after that, consider filing a support ticket.

7. try another browser. Install the RC client, or perhaps some Mac flavour of Nicholaz or Henri Beauchamp's CoolSL.

BINGO! I was just gonna suggest that.

Between my Desktop (wired) & Laptop (wireless) I notice a BIG BIG Difference using SL.

One culture may see slavery as unethical, yet another finds it ethical to enslave others

There are several other areas where ethics vary in ways between regions and peoples.

Some cultures find it ethical to swindle and cheat outsiders, but not those belonging to said culture

Ethics and morals both are like that

Give me a break.

Even you have to admit there are countries with different ethical, moral and social behaviors out there.

Humanity has fought wars over moral and ethical disagreements between cultures (especially the religious cultures )

Doesn't take much effort to find those with different outlooks, problem is getting folks to understand their outlook isn't the right one for everyone.

Ooh- I love a good de-railment, and this one has great possibility! In fairness to the poor abused OP, can we either give this one it's own thread or take over to the Immortal Thread? I think several folks would love to discuss this further - I know I would love to read others' views on this and toss in my .02 Lindens worth.
