Just out of curiosity... and helping how to organize things at my store I was wondering if I could get opinions on the following. Do you prefere to have the items you buy packaged and have to rezz a beautiful bag, box or other thingy or do you like to have a folder created in your inventory upon buying? thanks

Pep (It would cut subsequent inventory management effort massively!)

I prefer to get a folder. Getting a box is just an additional step. And while they might be pretty, unless it's a gift, I never bother to look at it. Half the time I don't even let it rez completely before I open it, grab the stuff and delete it.

I can see the virtue of the file but you do not generally encounter it as much as the box.

i prefer to get contents, so i can use the item right away - and they are stored in a proper folder that i can drag it to the location i want it stored. so many places don't allow you to rez, and if it's (no copy) you can't wear it and place it in to your inventory. also, when getting items as "contents" you can clean up the folder immediately and remove from your inventory the unnecessary scripts, notecards and landmarks (and you don't have the original box to hunt down and delete).

Folders. Especially with fatpacks.

Folders.
With boxes - 90% of shops refuse to give me anywhere I can rez them... - And when I do manage to rez them I end up with multiple copies of them in various places just from assorted timing confusion on my end.
Folders are preferable especially if the item gets listed on Xstreet, as I often buy from there while doing various social things, and I don't want to TP away to find a changing room just to try out a new toy.

my preference is a folder because it's just more convenient. if no build is on then i have to go home to open it and often i don't even appreciate a nicely done box or get annoyed if it's some giant sculpty monstrosity with boxes within boxes.
i can see some instances where you might want to box things up like on xstreet where you basically have to if you want to include an lm or any instructional notecards. in this instance, i would keep it simple with an image of the vendor ad as the texture on the box so you can easily identify what it is especially if the name isn't all that descriptive. toss that texture in with the contents too especially for things like clothes when you might not remember what it looks like and don't wanna bother putting the whole thing on to discover it's not the look you want for the day. i can also see where gift boxes might be nice for transfer type things that you would buy as a gift such as jewellry etc. you could also offer to gift box items for customers upon request.

The issue with Xstreet is that you almost have to box things up unless you're only sending one object. Sellers often want to also include an lm to an in-world store plus maybe a notecard with instructions etc so you can't send multiple things to customers in a folder from Xstreet.

Unfortunately, you cannot give folders remotely. The receiver has to be in the sim. So XStreet can only deliver it as a single, packaged item.

Either one is fine, as long as your permissions are clearly posted on the sell plate. Boxed items that have no permissions posted, might as well be artwork, since all I'm going to do is admire them.

My rezz vendor system gives folder anyways. As for what to receive? makes no difference to me. I do agree however that giving a box and then no option to unpack while in the store, is a bad idea. ThatMy sister sells her stuff boxed on my sim, and therefor I have a rather generous 15m return policy.

Another vote for folders. I'm way more apt to buy something that's a folder because I can look inside before I buy and get a sense of what's going on (does the shirt come on all 3 layers, are there prims, etc.). This is particularly useful since many sellers don't feel the need to give any info about layers (etc.) on their displays.
One my most pet peeves is stores that sell items boxed and then don't allow you to rez on premises. I don't want to TP all over just to try stuff on.
Another is vendors using "Pay" instead of "Buy" because again, as above, it doesn't allow me to peek at the item before I buy. I often won't buy at all if the only payment option is pay.

My vote for folders... but then you have to deal with the people who don't realise they have a new folder with everything in and assume that because nothing has been delivered to them they haven't got it. PS and I also seem to have an OCD condition where even when I have rezzed and emptied a box I feel compelled to keep a copy of it in my inventory... EVEN when everything inside was no-copy and the box is totally empty!
PPS Please tell me I'm not the only one!
PPPS Disclaimer before I get roasted: please don't be offended if you are OCD in RL.. I'm in no way trying to belittle people who suffer from this (I have my suspicions that includes me anyway, I have a thing about locking doors and turning off cookers that drives my missus nuts).

I often won't buy at all if the only payment option is pay. The items that I use "Pay" with are scripted items that open/close on touch - doors, curtains, etc. I have them rezzed to purchase copies of so "Pay" has to be used by default then as clicking utilizes the scripting. But with the item being rezzed, it is in full display. Otherwise I agree with "Buy" vs. "Pay." And I prefer folders with most things except, as Amar mentioned, a lot of sounds, textures, scripts, etc. that are broken down into smaller boxes within one big box.

Folders! And I never buy anything on XStreet, it's always in-world so how they're packaged there matters little to me. From: Looli Vella Another is vendors using "Pay" instead of "Buy" because again, as above, it doesn't allow me to peek at the item before I buy. From: Rime Wirsing Boxes are OK but can be a pain if its something you want to get at right away and you don't have rez rights where you purchase. Unless you are a land owner you'd have to go find a sandbox. One trick for that - do what most of us do accidentally often enough, wear the item. Then, while it is dangling from your hand, drag contents to inventory. Saves a LOT of time. That said, I really, really do prefer folders, from the very bottom of my heart. A friend mentioned one item today though for which a box actually makes sense and is so much more stylish - wedding rings.

Ah, but it is worth the humiliation of having a billboard on your head? Thanks for the tip, I will have to try it next time I go shopping.
