Hearing people in the house next door

I'm a new landlord and have set up what are basically rowhouses/townhouses. Is there any way to prevent the people from hearing each other in the next house? A script or a security product? There's not 20m between.

Thanks

You need 20m between them to not hear. Sorry. You can stagger by elevation to get the same effect.

You see many townhomes and highrises out there that are connected without the 20m limit. I presume people simply chat in in private IM's or maybe their just lucky that their neighbors aren't online at the same time. I have noticed that rent on these type of set ups are usually less than the norm.

As Cristalle said, there's no way around the 20m rule. If there was a script that would block out your neighbors it would be very popular.

My neighbors actually live more than 40m away, but they love to Shout for some reason. So, needless to say, my mute list all of a sudden has names on it. Just goes to show though, with some people even the 20m doesn't help.

I don't think the 20m privacy rule is a big concern for people. I thought it would be, as when we set up (and still do when we add) our rentals, we always ensure there is 20 m between rental homes for chat privacy. But after looking around, I realized that so many personal homes and even other rentals don't deliberately create this way.

So... I'm suspecting it's not a big deal and people simply chat in IM.

Some people can't deal with the proximity, and other people are fine with it. There are a lot of cool build configurations that would be lost if we always assured that dwellings were 100% private. As long as you explain this to tenants up front, and ask that they be courteous to one another, many will prefer to deal with the chatter and live in the interesting build.

At home I almost always use chat. But mostly that is because I can then use the bottom chat line box and never have to have the Communicate windows up - saves on screen real estate. So, I really only use IM when I'm in a location where I expect to have people within 20m of me and I want to talk privately.

I usually IM them and tell them that I can hear them. If they don't take care of the problem then, I do mute them. Nothing much else that you can do.

There are many interesting builds that would be foregone unnecessarily if we set all the places apart by 20m. You couldn't replicate the feel of 1920s rowhouses like at the Four Deuces if you had to get them all 20m apart. Many people don't mind the proximity too much but some people just can't deal with it. It takes all kinds.

This is probably something that could be dealt with in the viewer. Maybe an open source coder can be convinced to add the ability to restrict chat visibility in more flexible ways than currently possible. Without changing the server code, we'd still get the same chat as we do now, but the client could apply addditional filters before displaying the chat stream.

Chatting in IM is OK for two people, but gets tricky if there are 3 or more, as you then have to set up a group, invite your friends into it, then chat using group IMs.

Be aware, be very aware.

You don't have to set up a group.

You can do a calling card conference call.

so how far does voice go?

Is there the same issue?

-------

For the Text problem -

This would have been easily addressed by making the OUTER walls 20 meters apart

Usually its prims not space that are the limitations on a parcel

I'd suggest its poor planning.

For apartments right next to/on top of each other, isn't much you can do.

The house we rent has a wonderful feature in the house menu called Quiet/Loud. If you set it to quiet mode, no one can hear you as long as you are on your property...even if they are right next door. On loud....seems like EVERYONE can hear you. I am thinking that there must be a script you can get somewhere to add this to your home.
We learned about it only after hearing all the moaning, groaning and "oh babies" coming from the neighbors house...we put our house on quiet right then and there, and advised them to do the same.

Cheers,

My notes, from when I first started say to put a slash in front of your chat text and it only goes 10m instead of 20m -- called whispering.

/this would be a whisper

I've not a clue if it works - I've never tested it. But it would still only affect text and not voice.

Me too, please. I would love to offer this feature in our rentals.

No, it doesn't - that just removes the typing animation sound.

There used to be a product on SLX which apparently "soundproofed" a room so long as it only had one entry point. Presume it was something scripted ...

In the About Land menu you can check Restrict spatialized sound to this parcel: Checking this means that sounds from outside the parcel don't enter, and sounds from inside the parcel don't leave.

I wonder if this controls voice sound as well?

It does not effect typed chat.

I'm skeptical, I think Blu must be misinterpreting what this house menu setting does. I don't believe what he describes here is possible in SL with or without scripts. I can find no scripting function in the LSL Scripting Wiki http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_Chat
that can control chat in this way.

Perhaps the house menu Quiet/Loud settings are simply controling how loud the menu chat is, off/whisper/say/shout/owner say, etc.

If this house menu really can control chat I would love to see it in action.

I was wondering about this,

If you ban someone can they hear you speaking on your parcel? I had heard you cant hear them on your parcel

If so maybe it temporarily bans people who are in nearby parcels.

For voice, you need to have the parcel use a private channel, not the estate channel.

Anyone not on the parcel, even if not banned, will not be able to hear something on a different channel.
