...Many people also take substantial sums of money out of SL without even logging in, just letting a bunch of bots keep sending them money. If true, Tegg, I would hope LL is looking into it. Any drain on the economy like this hurts everyone in world. Do you suppose that's what the Bot Army At The Bottom of the Lake is? A hole in the SL economy out of which lindens are being siphoned? _____________________

If, as we're told, SL is a fantasy world, then any it's only logical to assume that any in-world investment scheme might also be mere fantasy!!!

First of all, I have to agree despite the lack of a question this is a great topic to bring up preemptively.
Not everyone is so keen as to spot a scam for what it is. Misleading wording of a scammer can be confusing to someone who has trouble understanding english. Some people have learning disabilities or other similar problems that keep their "scam alarm" from working at full potential. Many of these people come to SL not seeing it as a "game", but as a virtual world full of opportunity, whether it be social or business or whatever. I doubt these people being ripped off would agree that it's "fun" having those sorts of dangers out there. In fact, I don't see the fun factor in knowing that there are scammers and con-artists like that out there, at all. I personally agree with this statement. When asked what Second Life is, I don't say it's a game, granted like life is should not be taken too seriously, I say it's a virtual environment. Also I do have a learning disability called Dysgraphia, not to be confused with Dyslexia though many Dyslexics do have Dysgraphia as well. This effects my reading and writing and can cause me to skip over words while reading or writing. As far as the wording of a scam goes, this means I very well could skip over a word that would normally ring alarm bells. To that end I am very leery of changing from things that work for me and have been safe in the past. I am rather suspicious of anything that may be a scam IRL, and don't trust anyone with my L$ knowing there is no protection or recourse from loss. LL will not step in on my behalf for any dealings I have with another residents enterprise. |

Unfortunately there are a large number of new people coming into SL every day who mistakenly assume that Linden Labs will provide a some kind of policing and law enforcement to protect them in SL. No one at orientation Island is telling these good folks that SL is a lawless place and they can easily get ripped off if they are not careful. Time to dust off the FAQ that I wrote after a few months here: "Things Linden Labs don't tell you". Good point. Bring that FAQ back. Most people who enter SL have a reasonable expectation, that LL is going to police their product---especially since there are large sums of money being spent. The most successful online world, World of Warcraft, polices their product and naturally many people come from Warcraft and assume that LL would care about protecting their customers, at least at much as Blizzard. It is a reasonable assumption to make, from people who are not entirely cynical. Who would automatically think that LL, would allow ponci schemes, fraud, bots, scams, exploitation etc. to ruin their product? The surface advertising, does not tell people that SL is a lawless place, that makes even the open internet look safe, like a wolf in sheeps clothing. It does not tell people that the hidden, defacto "game" of SL became to some, how to be the most predatory and that in sinking to the lowest common denominator of avariciousness and having no loyalties to ethical behavior, one can rip off others and 'win" the game. LL does not seem to mind that SL can be used by the same kinds of people who spam email, send out keyloggers, specialize in the trade of identity theft, steal creations, phishing, cyber-terrorism, automated scams etc. LL doesn't seem to mind that their platform can be used for nefarious purposes, by the lowest common denominator and that their potentially great platform is reduced to being a very dangerous place, ruled by theives. |

Horrid nasty things, not fit for human consumption. I know this is late but I must stand up for grits. THEY ARE A MUSHY GIFT FROM GOD HIMSELF. Much like me... And SL only translates like RL if you wear your emotions on your virtual sleeve and get sucked into drama. Some are able to realize this is a game platform and have huge groups of friends that just build or otherwise cause silly chaos. Either way it's possible to get away from a bad situation by clicking on the X in the upper right corner at any time. And unlike RL, if you click that X, you can come back later! Not to insult anyone or point fingers but I've found that the ones that are emotionally distrought over SL don't have a very healthy or developed RL and try to use SL for what they think they can't accomplish in RL. _____________________

Mmmmm grits. I adore them. Especially on a chilly morning.
My Nigerian is an elderly woman dying of cancer. Her husband used to be the Minister of Finance until he mysteriously passed away. She's a good Christian and doesn't want her money to go to her scheming conniving in-laws, who are hovering over her bed, so no phone calls, please. We've exchanged e-mails several times, most of which consist of me trying to convince her to send the money to Union Carbide, who will make my special anthrax blend in mass quantities. I then plan to anthrax every non-Christian on the planet. So far she just keeps calling me a good "sister in Christ" but hasn't sent either me or Union Carbide any money. I'm starting to wonder about her... _____________________

Sorry Sally didn't mean to make you feel stupid lol. Thunderbirds was a TV show started in the 60s (i think). anyway it was made with wooden puppets on string, they lived on an island and when there was an emergency the island would come apart to let the air ships etc out of their docks (these were called thunderbirds 1-5). I never really watched it regularly as they were only on reruns when I was growing up. It was made into a film recently too.
Need to look at those links for the blue angels tho. never heard of them. lol |
