Both are "popular" because the media has Made a National Fad out of them. Personally, I've never Followed the Herd, i don't find either of them particularly "Cool", Probably because i Know the historical Truth behind Each.

I do too. Which is why I know pirates are cool. I'm an aspiring naval officer and a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval reserve in real life while studying at university - maritime history is one of my many passions.
