Continent Names...?

So there I was thinking the folks at Linden hadn't even bothered to name the continents and all the time they've had names. Can someone tell me the names and which continent is which. We have five continents, two in the top right of the map and three to the left (though the top two on the left now appear to be joined by a stretch of water populated by a couple of ships and an oil rig). I know one's called Nautilus; but which one, and where's Corsica going to be in relation to all this (near Nautilus apparently) ?

To avoid confusion let's temporarily label the continents..

Top Right - 1
Bottom Right - 2

Top Left - 3
Middle Left - 4 (now joined to 3)
Bottom Left - 5

So anyone know the names of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5...?

Nautilus is the newest continent, the one currently at the top right (#1 on your list). According to the blog post, Corsica will be north of Nautilus.

To my knowledge, LL has never announced official names for the other continents, but residents came up with names for some of them.

From the SL History Wiki, the top left continent (#3 on your list) is called Heterocera Atoll:

http://www.slhistory.org/index.php/Heterocera_Atoll

But I have also heard it called "The Atoll Continent" and "Patagonia".

The now middle left continent (#4 on your list, and the first continent made) was referred to as the "Southern Continent" when the atoll continent was made, but now there is a larger continent farther to the south (#5) which is what most people mean by "The Southern Continent".

I have heard other names for the old continent and the new southern continent, but I don't remember them. And to date, no one has found a name for the southern eastern continent (#2).

Which is the in continent?

Actually, I've long wondered if there was any sorta name for the land mass I call home. I would be interesting to know!

I've heard the continent in the far south referred to as Korea or the Asian continent, probably due to the names of many of the original sims there.

All current mainland continents. In order of creation (names are what I call them, not official except for Nautilus):

1) the old continent - left center
2) the atoll continent - left top
3) the southern continent - left bottom
4) the eastern continent - right bottom
5) Nautilus continent - right top

I found some answers!

First off, there's this old site, for those interested in SL maps an stuff:
http://www.slmaps.com/

Anyway, I found the answer on my own 'puter. Unfortunately, I dun remember where I got this thing in the first place. It's an old-looking map, titled "Grid Agni." It lists the three older continents as follows, from top to bottom:

2) the atoll continent - left top: Heterocera Atoll
(This is confirmed via http://www.slhistory.org/index.php/Heterocera_Atoll - bt the site was being buggy today for me)

1) the old continent - left center: Sansara (the little sandy hook-shaped piece to the lower right? Where I live, is also marked as Islandia. The snowy area to the bottom is "Snowlands region."

3) the southern continent - left bottom: Jeogeot

This leaves only the Eastern continent without a name.

those look neat, when you bring them in that way.

i like the looks of the atoll continent best, from this vantage point.

The 'SL Maps' site has some excellent maps and using the 'Timeline Map' feature for the main grid you can get a clear picture of the evolution of SL, definitely something I can work on. So we have names now for each of the continents with the exception of one, number 2, that's Ava's 'Eastern Continent', any takers..

I've heard these, but a search of the forums indicate they were actually assigned by residents, except for Heterocera.

Sansara was originally one of the possible "world" names the Lindens considered before settling on "Second Life", and it was resident Dyne Talamasca who later assigned it to the first continent in March 2006.

In the same thread Argent Stonecutter announced the now southernmost continent as "the Korean continent" because all the region names are Korean. One problem though... that's when it was incomplete and all the region names WERE Korean. Now fully built out, the western portion of that continent does not use Korean place names. A December 2006 / January 2007 thread about what the continents are named showed an inworld map by Dyne Talamasca that names it "Jeogeot", but again, the continent is only half built. From what I can see, this is the first mention of Jeogeot as a name, so I suspect this is another name declared by Dyne.

Torley mentions the name Heterocera a few times in November 2005. In January 2006, in response to a question, Torley states that this IS the official name, and that she got the info from Ben Linden.

Threads:
Dyne names Sansara
/108/d4/96140/1.html

Desmond Shang links to pic of Dyne's map
/327/b6/154850/1.html

Torley states Heterocera is official
/108/1d/84544/1.html

That said, I'm happy with the names. That still leaves the "eastern continent" to be named...

Many of us asked about continent names in comments to the Corsica blog post, and I see that Jack Linden has responded:

From: Jack Linden
Several of you have asked about the names of the other continents; I’ll see if I can rustle up a grid map with those on for you. In the meantime I have put up a map of the new Corsica region in the foyer of the office build on Linden Estate Services, so you can see how that will look.

Heterocera = (Science: zoology) a division of lepidoptera, including the moths, and hawk moths, which have the antennae variable in form. .

Sansara = (Description and Meaning): [Sanskrit, "the running around"]
The rounds of birth and death and rebirth, reincarnation. Cyclic existence, the beginningless and endless wheel of rebirth. The world, the realm of desire.

Jeogeot = that over there, that thing

Nautilus = originally referred to the Argonauta, otherwise known as paper nautiluses, because they allegedly use their two expanded arms as sails

Corsica = the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus.) It is known as the "Scented Isle" or the "Island of Light"..

So much for a common theme.....

No, definitely no common theme, although Sansara and Jeogeot weren't assigned by the Lindens as far as I can find.

I just spent some time looking at the region names in the eastern continent to see if there was a theme there that might help us name it. Although there are small groups that adhere a theme (fictional animals, Dr. Who villains, James Bond characters), there is no unifying concept as far as I can tell.

Thanks for posting the great maps. Hope this doesn't take it too OT, but is the old continent the only one with snow? And, would you say its borders are pretty firmly established? DO the shapes of these continents continue to change? I just love the snow and was thinking about a mountian get-a-way.

Again, sorry if this is too OT. :o

As a general rule the older continents are finished, although Jack Linden indicated that they might do a few touch-ups where they left some unfinished (I think they meant that weird gap down the middle of Jeogeot).

Sansara is the only MAINLAND with snow, but Anshe does have a winter Dreamland estate.

http://dreamland.anshechung.com/index.php?fct=DREAMLAND_ARCTICA

She charges about $9/month for a 1024, but it seems there isn't a lot of land available there. Still, if you want a nice place, this might be your best bet (not sure if she has mountains, though...).

From the SL History Wiki, the top left continent (#3 on your list) is called Heterocera Atoll:

http://www.slhistory.org/index.php/Heterocera_Atoll

But I have also heard it called "The Atoll Continent" and "Patagonia".

It is also known as the Moth Continent because most, if not all the Sim names are of scientific names of moths. Moths are insects of the suborder heterocera of the order lepidoptera.

I want the name of the eastern continent to be Satori.

I wonder if it was named when they built it?
