Have you made arrangements with any of your RL family or friends to contact people inside SL, if something happens to you? For instance, my RL husband knows that if something happens to me, he has to get online long enough to tell my general manager, who will handle things from there. She knows to contact specified people (the ones I really care for and love), who will, hopefully, announce to anyone else who needs to know. I couldn't stand the thought that my friends might think I cared so little about them as to simply walk away and never look back. Am I the only one who has made arrangements?

Yes, I did this a couple years ago. I have asked two of my RL friends who know what I do in SL to notify a handful of my online-only contacts in case of something dire.
The funny thing is, every time I hear about an SLer dieing in real life, and the message being conveyed by a supposed real-life spouse, friend, or sibling, I am instantly skeptical, because I have seen MANY fake SL deaths first-and-second-hand.
There are people in-world who deserve to know. I guess I should think of some form of authentication, so people know it's for real, not just yet another faked SL death. Honestly, I can only think of three or four SL deaths that I believe were legitimate (and they were all corroborated by known residents who had real-life ties to the demised), and I have literally heard of dozens aside from that, all of which I believe to be hoaxes.

Sad, that. Should you ever hear of my death being reported...trust it. I think faking a death is a cowardly and truly screwed-up thing to do. I won't even just leave SL without a word - I have a sim, people I rent to, people who genuinely care about me, and...there's no way I could just walk away without a word to anyone.

Not to be a cold sonovabitch...
I couldn't give a rat's patootie.
Oops.
I guess that blows my desire not to be seen as a cold sonovabitch.

Last Will and Testament...
02-09-2009 12:02
To assist people with this issue, I created this free, full permissions, Last Will and Testament scripted object. It will send out an IM message, notecard and/or object to the heir you designate if you fail to log on to Second Life for 30 days. I am very close to releasing an improved version of this device which 1. does not require that the Owner come into contact with the scripted object in order for it to know they have logged into SL, 2. it will be possible to keep the scripts inside of any object the owner keeps rezzed in SL, such as in an XStreet vendor box, 3. sends the Owner a reminder every 7 days if it does not detect them as having logged into SL, and a final 24 hour notice that the script is counting down and will send out the Owner's Last Will and Testament to the heir if the Owner does not log in. I will keep the latest version of the script and associated devices available here in the XStreet Marketplace and at my store in Shona.

Not directly. There are a few special people, like my SL Partner and some of my closest friends, who have at least an e-mail address that they can try, if something seems to have happened to me. But no, if my Player actually dies, the last thing I would want my RL mate to have to deal with is trying to make sense out of the many strange "relationships" that my main and my alts may have in SL.

Well, my husband and I are quite open about SL. But what would be the problem of giving your RL mate ONE name and email, and making sure that person knows to spread the word?

From: HoneyBear Lilliehook Well, my husband and I are quite open about SL. But what would be the problem of giving your RL mate ONE name and email, and making sure that person knows to spread the word? Actually, that would probably happen anyway. My best friend in RL is also a resident in SL. So if anything happened to me, I am sure they would at least get an announcement out in SL. And they are part of my Household Group, so would have a list to start with for directly notifying those who shared my home and lands.

Considering to many people on my friends list, I have already disappeared, and the majority of them haven't noticed. So, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. (>_<

(>_< Seriously....do you not have ONE person on your friends list that you'd hate having think you just bailed? My friends list is filled with designers and models, who I'm sure wouldn't notice me missing ever. But likewise, I have people I've known for over a year (some since I was 2 wks old), that I talk to every day, and we've shared personal contact info too - RL names, phone numbers, addresses. They'd need and want to know if something happened to me.

I often lose interest in various things, including SL, for periods of time often exceeding 30 days, so I don't think this would be too helpful for me..

From: HoneyBear Lilliehook Well, my husband and I are quite open about SL. From: Sgeo Comet I often lose interest in various things, including SL, for periods of time often exceeding 30 days, so I don't think this would be too helpful for me.. The time period can be increased or decreased, depending on what works for the individual. The individuals needs vary depending on if they have a business to run, lindens to sell to cover tier payments, etc. etc. There is no one size fits all. Every individual needs to decide for themselves what they want the device to do.

No I have not made arrangements, but I will do so. At the same time, I will tell all my video game characters that they'll have to carry on in their digital world without me.
