Spring Break promises to offer plenty of game time for my uploading pleasures. :p

Not a signle thing I wrote was specifically directed at any one person, If you have an issue with what I wrote then that is your problem and not mine and I stand by what I wrote.

The fact that you take a personal affront to my comments is also an issue with which you need to deal IMHO.

The same can be said for the viewer client software.

Scripts aren't people, they're programs too.

You want scripts banned too?

The real issue is PEOPLE exploitating other people in secondlife.

Kindly stick to that issue and stop demonizing all the people that run bots without being exploitive.

Some scripts ARE banned. Specifically scripts that cause denial of service or $L fraud.

Oh, and the PEOPLE doing these things are banned too.

'banned' sounds like the wrong word to use in this context... but whatever.

So, you'll concede that bots are fine and okay unless used to violate the terms of the ToS/CS or real world law then?

(p.s. -- given that simply running a bot is NOT a violation of the ToS/CS nor likely to ever be one in this non-democracy)

If one is to stand behind a comment, one should do that. Your response shows that you do not. Said comment is not one which could be taken any other way, and is obviously directed at those of us who have differing opinions than you. As I count myself in that number (along with a goodly number of other posters) I felt the comment was uncalled for and said as much.

I think it is not I who has the problem here.

First we have tons of threads regarding the VAT. then tons of threads regarding content theft and now tons of threads regarding bots.

wah, wah, wah

If people spent half as much time doing something creative in SL that they spend bitching and moaning in the forums then they might actaully find SL can be a really neat place.

I will say right now, I intend t use two bots in my store to show off clothing designs. The bots are regular avatars that were created by a human player and one of those avatars I use to work on builds when I don't want to b bothered.

To those that do not like the idea of bots being used for this purpose, don't use them; but also do not try to take away the rights pof others to use them in a dictatorial fashion.

Remember. when they came for my neighbor I did not speak up. When they came for my mother I did not speak. When they came for me there was no one left to speak.

The best way to make SL better is to pressure LL to improve the stability of the system, instead of complaining about something that YOU don't like but do not take into account the others in world they can and do use them for quite legitmate purposes. You opinion may be different, so be it.

You're planning on leaving your computer turned on, and online 24/7. Ok. Why do you think you have a right to run a bot? I don't remember reading about this "right" in the Terms Of Service.

Would you be so kind as to point out the bot clause to me please?

SL is a privilege... for everyone. no one has any rights.

The ToS/CS doesn't specifically say we have a right to wear flexi-wings either, and yet can if we want to without fear of banishment.

Actually, SL is a service provided by and wholly owned by a private company, who can set the terms and conditions of use to anything they see fit.

(not arguing with you 3ring, just expanding)

...but not if the consturction or use of those wings resulted in denial of service or offense to others under Community Standards or TOS.

LOL no worries. i don't typically take anything personal, and when i sniff smoke, i put out the fire, or ignore it and let it put itself out. LOL anyways, good expansion. ;)

Bots, ToS and Community Standards

There are several parts of the ToS that could apply, the following (4.1) being the most appropriate:

"In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not:

(viii) interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers or networks connected to the Service, or disobey any requirements, procedures, policies or regulations of networks connected to the Service;....."

This could be read with Community Standard number 6:

"Disturbing the Peace
Every Resident has a right to live their Second Life. Disrupting scheduled events, repeated transmission of undesired advertising content, the use of repetitive sounds, following or self-spawning items, or other objects that intentionally slow server performance or inhibit another Resident's ability to enjoy Second Life are examples of Disturbing the Peace."

Intense use of bots on mainland is AR'able and has been done before. This applies even if the whole mainland sim is owned, as other (adjacent) sims are impacted by child agents.

If someone populates their own private region with bots, then the issue becomes a bit more woolly, as server would then have to be interpreted as a central server.

If you AR a bot, quote the ToS reference, it makes the AR easier to resolve and be pinned down to a violation.

Which would OBVIOUSLY violate the terms of the ToS/CS.

My POINT was LL has implied we have the right to do anything that does not voilate the terms of the ToS/CS (or blog-announced policy changes in some cases).

Which includes running bots. (unless the bots are used in ways that LL specifically or categorically prohibits.)

Countless threads on the forums about how some bots are unfair doesn't seem to be moving them to change policy to forbid them outright.

LL has had 4 major policy shifts that I'm aware of:

Sexual-age-play, Casinos, Banks, and Ad-farm-Land-Extortion.

Don't hold your breath for an 'all bot ban' to jump onto that list. LL would have to end the open-source-viewer project and sacrifice the massive number of contributor submissions and bug-fixes they get from their technical user community.

There'd have to be a radical change in LL's executive management for that to happen. And if that does happen, residents is going to have bigger worries than bots.

Ceasing the development of exploitative bots would be a most welcome...um... development.

I'm not a big fan of bots but I'm even less a fan of bot hunters who orbit the first avie they find that appears to be a bot. I own a rather large private estate that is open to the public and have friends who will use it to park their avies while they leave their comuter because they are playing an ingame game that they benifit from as long as they remain online. I have no idea how many bot hunters have been banned by me for finding these inactive avies and orbiting them. It upsets my friends when they return and have no clue where they are or how they got there. When they ask me I tell them to look on their Bumps/Pushes reports at tell me who hit them with a scripted object.

If you are bot hunting stay away from my land because I will ban you for that activity. I doubt that a bot has ever visited my land and stayed very long so everybody there is a real account even though they may be away from their computer. I find strangers left there all the time and I never orbit them, I let them return eventually and leave peacefully.

Really the only bots that rely on QUANTITY to get their job done are Traffic/Camp bots.
Most bots are designed to get as much work done as possible with as few bots as possible.

Umm there was a huge explosion in Landbots & Searchbots because they were hammering the grid too hard with their TPing in and out so quickly LL slowed something down, probably making it harder for normal residents in the process, the bot runners just went from 10 bots to 100 each to get around LL's fix.
And of course quantitiy is important, there are 16,000 sims to monitor, and if you want to be able to buy land the second it becomes for sale under market price then you either need a lot of them bouncing around kicking the crap out of the asset server or 1 for each bot runner sitting in every sim they want to monitor. Hence one of the reasons botrunners are trying to get a 16m block in every sim so they have landing/parking points.

Hmm because there are sides, botrunners aren't interested in any comprimise, they don't even realise they are grinding SL to a halt, making it impossible for resident s to buy land and products on weekends.

Getting rid of traffic would work real quick and they couldn't work around it.
Just make the classifieds based on who many dollars they pay to bump themselves, let the top dogs bump each other into bankruptcy for all I care.
Traffic means nothing anymore it's like trying to work out which basket has the best apples when someone keeps filling them as you look.

As long as the bots add to LL's total accounts, traffic and concurrency numbers, and as long as LL wants to keep them pumped up for PR purposes, the bots will stay and their tribe will probably increase.

SL will end up with all bots and die.

A sensible company would have the sense to extrapolate the ever increasing use of bots when they look into the crystal ball.

People no longer need to even log on themselves when they can use bots. Just turn on your bots and walk away. A culture of bots. Bots that take Lindens from other bots. Most bots wins.

World of Botcraft.

Bots need absolute banning. No exceptions.
