Hey all.

I'm thinking of having a small event to celebrate the opening of my new little business - more on that later.

I'd like to have a live musician - someone who is versatile and can play a variety of genres - stuff ya can dance to.

No folk or country music please!

Oh, and please....someone who can actually SING. I've been to a few live performances where I sat there thinking..."Um...WTF?"

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks Al, I'll check that out.

I would still like the opinions of others who attend live music events too!

Being a Non-Singing musician Why ?
You have artists like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai who hardly sing at all, Try getting a ticket to one of their concerts after tickets have been on sale for a couple of days, they go fast.
One mans meat is another mans poison I guess.

I enjoy performances from both musicians and musician vocalists, & occasionally a performer starts his set with some amazing musicianship , Great I think ... Until he opens his mouth and sings. Being a musician like I said at start, I know how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time, I can sing well, and play well , but both together the whole package suffers.

Thats why I use a multitracker .

Maybe look into getting a band to do your event.
Post the event when it happens anyway I like to witness any performance live with vocals or not.

Blues,

Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking me why I want someone who is a talented singer or someone who doesn't sing?

I myself have attended events where the person was an amazing musician but a "meh" singer, and vice versa. I have also been to one I can think of who could sing and play very good, but folk music - which is what I am not looking for.

I hadn't thought of the live band option, so thanks for that idea! Any suggestions? heh

no I'm saying solo "GOOD" musician/vocalists are quite a rare breed, duo's trios bands are a much better way to ensure each artist is actually giving 100% of his chosen field, instead of a kinda 70/30 split of talent,

Oh, and please....someone who can actually SING. I've been to a few live performances where I sat there thinking..."Um...WTF?"

Exactly what you said above actually , Rarely is a solo artist proficient in both vocals and musicianship there are not many of us who can process doing two (or more) things simultaneously, to a perfect level, those who can are usually very successful artists.

There is also the option of a musician who records all his own backing tracks, and just sings over them, The singing will get 100% concentration then .( Its still the work of the solo artist,) cheating a little but IMO for the benefit of the overall performance. :)
But maybe not cheating ,as every studio I've ever been in this is what happens, the vocals are almost always laid down in isolation.

Hope that explains what I was getting at a little clearer. And I wish you luck in finding what you need.

Dont forget post the event I'm always looking for Live performances to attend in SL , I attended a keyboard/synth instrumental performance a couple of days ago and although it wasn't something I'd normally listen too I stayed and actually found myself enjoying it even though it was really basic music.

Charley Ihnen (Charley is a female singer who sings with her sister Lesley while her husband Jae plays the guitar). Awesome performers.

Coda Cazalet is an awesome jazz performer who plays the sax and sings with her beautiful voice.

Maximilian Kleene. If you are not in the sim 1 hour before he starts, good luck. He sings a version of Plain White Ts' "Hey There Delilah" that just make me melt every time. Wide range of style. Sexy sexy voice. Large following. I don't know who to see about booking him, but I know he plays almost every night.

Max is very good. It's been a while since I've been able to attend one of his shows, but I am in his group.

I suggest you consult the folks at Blue Fusion Jazz Club, which has frequent live events and has had several VERY talented solo singing artists perform there.

Hi Solanghe,

If you need more suggestions, throw me an IM inworld sometime. I might have some ideas for musicians that would work well for a party.

Especially if you want to throw a smallish event, you might want to check out some lesser-known or newer people, or your guests will have a hard time attending the party :D

I can also shoot you the names of Max's contactpeople if you want them.

@P2....... Pillowfish are about as folk as it gets. Very good, but very definitely folk and I wouldn't consider Cylindrian's fabulous tunes exactly party music :)

We had Vienna for the grand opening of a sim and loved her so much she will be back monthly for us. She sings to tracks, but has an awesome voice as well as a GREAT stage presence.

Hi Sally

I was hoping you'd respond as I know you are a live music hopper. :) I will contact you in world - thanks so much.

Yes, the venue is smallish, so I have to consider that as well, thanks for reminding me.

I appreciate everyone's input so far very much!

Hear samples of many Sl musicians at: http://www.slusic.com/

Ope Beattie (the one time I saw him he was quite good)
Paisley Beebe
Thumper Boucher (seen several of his performances, quite good)
Srv4u Conacher
Pakito Crimson (again, just one performance by him seen by me)
Rich Desoto (the one performance of his I saw was good)
Orangelife Holmer (another one I've only seen one performance on, good singer)
Dexter Ihnen
Vienna James
Etherian Kamaboko
Edward Kyomoon
Grace McDunnough
CanTell Mizser
Preciousse Moody
Tukso Okey
Matthew Perreault
Cylindrian Rutabaga
Duzzy Ryder
Shantu Selene
Starr Singer
Melvin Took
Tone Uriza
Eliz Watanabe

Friendly Fire is a duo that performs together.
Los Shamanes - another band

There are several names that I have left off that have more country/folk in their systems (and others who I know I like, but do not recall their genre as it has been awhile).

Well, if you don't mind Elvis...BubbaC John is great. I book him regularly and he's a great impersonator - has actually won Elvis impersonation contests. His rate is reasonable and he really brings them in.

For rock tunes, I recommend Zac Claxton.

For blues, Von Johin.

Contact me in world tonight and I'll give you some manager names.

Srv4u is my absolute favorite musician. He sings great blues and his guitar just rocks the sim :) Very energetic artist!

Guy Goodman is another favorite for swing music.

Solanghe, one question for you... what's your objective for this event? Is it to celebrate your accomplishment with friends? Is it to drive traffic to your new business? If it is for driving taffic, what sort of demographic are you after? All these questions might help narrow down a suggestion for you. If you don't want to tip your hat about the demographic because you don't want to let out information about an unannounced business, PM me and I'll be happy to toss some ideas around with you. I think without those answers, it's a matter of everyone tossing out their favorite performers' names... which is fun to read, but might not suit your purpose.

If you have group room, join Summertime Blues Club - I book Bubba in about once a month and Von will be with us again on 4/11. I have the Virtual Live Band booked for 3/16 and they are absolutely great. By joining, you can get notification of who I'm having and when (although warning, we do hold events twice daily so you'd get some spam about that).

Hi HoneyBear,

Thanks for the info. Um...I think I'll be passing on the Elvis guy; no offense to those who enjoy "the King". ;)

I will come check out VLB, I've heard they are great.
