From: Yumi Murakami On the one hand, it's a good idea.. on the other hand, it's a bit of a telling sign.
You know that the goldrush is over when people start selling shovels instead of getting their own gold. The people that really "cleaned up" during the real goldrushs were 1) people that were very lucky, 2) people that sold the shovels (or pans, for the rivers).

From: Trout Recreant I'm ok with the oysters. Escargot gives me the creeps. OK, so Lindal and Kira are in, as soon as they finish with whatever you women do in the bathroom (don't tell me, please. I have a feeling it's better left a mystery). This has gone from a date to a field trip in a hurry, but what the heck, everyone pile into the bus, let's go to the movies. Milk Duds, Junior Mints, and I get a big box of those Everlasting Gobstoppers. I love those things. My dentist HATES them, but what does he know? Oysters, an order of buffalo wings, probably a couple drinks, popcorn and soda... My stomach is starting to ache just thinking about it. /me walks through the thread, sees the buffalo wings in Trouts hands, grabs a few and runs back out again...

From: Elora Lunasea /me walks through the thread, sees the buffalo wings in Trouts hands, grabs a few and runs back out again... Gee, she didn't even stay for the Coming Attractions trailers... I can just picture this field trip. A theater, with a small mob of avatars sitting together in the center, gabbing, passing the popcorn around, and being gernerally obnoxious. Every few minutes, someone gets up to go out to the concession stand, or comes back in with an armful of snacks, stepping on everyone else's toes. The other theater-goers have given the noisy mob in the center a wide berth, and are seated here and there around the periphery, occasionally casting a glare at us and going "Shush!" A few couples in the group are obviously not going to see much of the movie, being much more interested in each other. As the lights dim and the trailers come up, somebody asks Trout to Rate the actresses as they appear. This quickly degenerates into a hilarious shouting match, with cries of "4.3!" and "Nah, man, she's a 6.1 at least!" By the end, even the CGI monsters are being scored. A Good Time was had by all. What was the film? Who cares? Now...in a desperate effort to pull myself back on topic: Even the people who sell shovels in SL have a tough time of it. Take the folks who offer classes in scripting and building...very few of them see a good return on their invested time. I think those who have mentioned that the secret is to sell your product OUTSIDE SL are on to something. Books about SL. Software, like sculpty creation or animation software, that can be used to develop content for SL. Third party viewers. And there's a new blog post...some third party exchanges are now offering L$ trading in other currencies besides US$, and Our Hosts are encouraging others to do so. But maybe that deserves its own thread, to explore the ups and downs of that particular business.

I think it's the people who sell whiskey to the prospectors and shovel merchants who really make out.

Taunt

From: Soji Slade I have never heard of Taunt Hair Shack. I am so out of it. Andy, the guy who operates Taunt, used to have an incredible enthusiasm for SL and was a really helpful person. Check out his blog... http://taunt.com/He used to spill his every secret. I loved that blog. Real life stuff seems to have grabbed his attention and the blog has fallen into disuse. I don't know if he still advertises in the classifieds. He used to be near the top of the list for hair. Last I checked his island and store was still there.

Still, the biggest money was made in San Francisco, from those supplying the miners with their equipment, not from the gold strikes themselves. Mari

From: Trout Recreant I can have a hell of a lot of fun with L$13,000! Way more than 5 hours worth. Thats just enough for a quick shopping trip, perhaps 35 minutes and it would be all gone

From: Rioko Bamaisin Ha I wouldn't even need that long.. I'm figuring at least 20 minutes of that is relogging due to TPing around the place I figure is about right for me, I'd need to visit several stores slowly building up the outfits. or of course I could just spend it all in one hit, there is a rather nice couch I've had my eye on that costs about that.

We talk about men. Duh. Especially dangerous on dates, as you're likely to be the ones getting rated.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Well, the times when I was dragged into one were not for talking... but there may have been some rating going on. /me smiles wistfully... back when we were young and stupid... they 'young' wears off... still hoping on the 'stupid' .d

What do you think we guys talk about while we mill around outside of the restroom waiting for you all? Same thing. ok. I'm lying. We just stand there with our hands in our pockets looking like dopes. Unless there's a tv nearby. Then we stand there with our hands in our pockets watching Sports Center and looking like dopes.
