According to LL's own metrics 1/4 of all sessions have an abnormal end. Isn't 25% failure rate a bit high for a multi-user platform?

Do 25% of sessions actually crash??? |

I rarely crash while using SL, but probably a third of log-offs end in a frozen client, which probably shows up as "abnormal" even though it doesn't affect me playing SL.

Well, I keep getting threatened by rain, so I have no choice but to log off. Is that abnormal?

I believe the statistic. When SL is having a bad hair day, I'll have to relog from several crashes during one session. Each one is an "abnormal" ending from LL's point of view.

I guess now we need someone to define "normal" ?

Well personally, I haven't had a session that didn't end in a crash in the last 2 months, so I think thats a little low.

I'm using Nicholaz' viewer, so I rarely crash at all.

using nicholaz also, rare crashes, except when visting overtextured areas with 30+ av's ... at which point I blame my video card for not keeping up...
25% is a bit high, but I'll be if you sorted by hardware, that number would good WAY down for wired cable connections with good vid cards... things that cause frequent crashes in order of highest lieklyhood slow comp/vid card wireless /bad isp connections dsl or isp that does strange traffic shapping high ping times to the server (non-us connections mostly) those aren't including things like viewer memory leaks (I can stay on24hr+ on nicholaz client) or server and client errors _____________________

I'm using Nick's viewer too...and I still end with a crash about 50 to 70% of the time. That is, my session ends unexpectedly when SL crashes. Deliberate exits usually go smoothly.

I found that I crashed more often on my new laptop, which has a middling Intel mobile graphics system. I never saw my head disconnect from my body and end up in my nether regions except on that machine. The desktop uses an ATI Radeon X1300/X1550 card and works fine.

I got a great pc and still crash every 40 mins or so... in a good day i will go 2 whole hours withtout a crash. I don; think I ever had a whole session (4 or more hours) withtout a crash.
Most of my crashes are 'client disconnects' - The client looses connection with the servers and I need to re-log to get back in-world. .d |

25% doesn't seem unreasonable to me. However, I think alot of people don't realize that the viewer can freeze for a minute or so and then come back to life... I believe alot of people just kill the program when it freezes.

I crash to desktop, with the SL crash logger coming up, about every third teleport.
I'm only using the official SL client, and my system specs are far in excess of the minimum. So I'd say probably about 70% of my sessions end in a crash; I rarely get to log out normally, rather thinking "stuff it" after I crash again, and go off to do something else. Broccoli _____________________

Isn't 25% failure rate a bit high for a multi-user platform? MORE than. I hardly ever report my crashes anymore; it just adds more frustration and time to trying to get back on. Probably there are others the same. coco _____________________

25% of all sessions?
no way. can't be that low. Over the last weekend, i had 100% crashes, with sometimes not more than a minute between crashes. |

There will also be a lot of people trying to use the client on Vista which SL still doesn't run that stably on. The Mac client is also still prone to crashing if you play in full-screen, but then it's a lot better playing in a window at full-screen size anyway as you can do other things while SL is open.

/me drops a pebble in the pond...
I depends how they are counting crashes. I've noticed a fair number of crashes I get don't fire a "send crash report" at the next login. I was also testing compiled from source versions of the viewer, and they didn't have the crash logger at all. There are also times when SL will leave me able to turn in circles and type in chat to no-one, but if I select "Quit" to re-log, the client manages to exit gracefully. So that's not a crash either apparently. One way to judge how often you crash is to see how often the log in to last location picture is actually in the same place as you were when you last left. For me. It's not all that often. Maybe 50-60% sessions end in crashes. And another thought. The LL count doesn't include all the times you need to log out and re-log because of excessive lag, no account balance, no friends list, no groups list .... So those probably count as "OK" sessions. "Viewer Crashes is the percentage of sessions where the user did not explicitly logout" - So from now on I'm just going to kill the window if SL crashes or otherwise borks rather than use "Quit" from the menu (if that's possible!). Interestingly though "Region Sessions Terminated is the percentage of sessions where users were kicked off a Region." I'm not sure but that might mean that after the crashes I get when my first re-log gives me a "Region is something or other, please try again in a few minutes" might be clocking in to that metric? And while I'm here If one takes a browse through the blog you get a pretty good idea of how smooth SL is running these days: [RESOLVED] Temporary Issues Within Second Life - Monday, November 12th, 2007 [Resolved] Network issues - Saturday, November 10th, 2007 [COMPLETE] Rolling Restart: Coming Soon to a Sim Near You - Friday, November 9th, 2007 (New server code caused sims to crash and required another restart). Most of my sessions end in a crash, or a region re-start or a bad logout where the blue sausage thing stops just short of the right hand end and stays there for 5 mins.
But it's not unusual to get a good hour and a half plus in-world before the crash occurs! _____________________

Using the current Mac client, It's been remarkably stable recently [ gasp ], runs for hours on end without a problem normally, the occaisional 'redmap' and brief 'stall' while camming around. Actual client crashes have been happening rarely for me, I'm plucking a number from the air here, but a guesstimate of better than 1/10 [crashes to logins]

When I ran SL on XP, I rarely crashed, and that was a on a much lower spec system, too. |
