Second Life is a poor platform for FPS gaming. You mentioned that you wanted an FPS experience. There are a ton of great Army games that are out there. I'd suggest you look into one of them. Heck, the US Army has one that it sponsors that's pretty fun. Look up America's Army. It's not as good as others, but there you go. The problem with SL as a FPS platform is that everyone experiences it differently based on their Computers. Lag is much more of a problem, the rendering engine doesn't work well, there's no way to swap weapons in mouselook, no way to take cover, and any number of other problems that just make it not feasible.
That renders most of the "Armies" worthless for actual combat, but it doesn't stop their roleplaying. Just make sure you are in a group that isn't griefing people. Forcing your roleplay onto others is griefing IMO. A lot of armies/police forces/etc. run around bullying other people and generally being assclowns. Avoid those guys.

Check out World of Warcraft, or some other on-line multi-player game that is designed around combat activities, rather than Second Life. Second Life is a very poor platform for FPS combat, and most of the residents here don't do that sort of activity.
Seeking a great FPS/Army Combat activity in SL is like looking for hot group sex at a religious tent revival meeting. While some people there may be into what you're looking for, it's the wrong place and the wrong time to find many willing participants.
