Hi all, is this a sign of things to come as content creators in SL start impacting the RL: (interesting about it being entered into consideration for the Oscars!) So what does this mean? Is SL really going to make it as the next platform?
From today's Hollywood Reporter: HBO has acquired a documentary film that was created and produced entirely within virtual world Second Life.
Directed by Douglas Gayeton, the docu, "Molotov's Dispatches in Search of the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey," chronicles an avatar, Molotov Alva, as he travels through the virtual world learning of the complex social interactions that take place within Second Life.
Gayeton is an industry veteran, having co-written and co-directed the interactive CD-ROM movie "Johnny Mnemonic" (the version that does not star Keanu Reeves) for Sony Imagesoft. In the 1990s, he also was a member of Propaganda Films along with directors Spike Jonze, David Fincher and Alex Proyas.
The 35-minute docu was produced by Amsterdam-based Submarine and will air sometime next year, HBO said. In an interview with blog New World Notes, Gayeton said that HBO intends to submit "Molotov" for Academy Award consideration in the animated short-subject category.
The deal is a milestone for Second Life, the 3-D virtual world launched in 2003 that now boasts more than 9 million residents worldwide. But other companies, including traditional entertainment brands, are starting to leverage virtual worlds as part of their interactive marketing programs. Among those is Warner Bros., which is working on a Second Life co-promotion to raise awareness for "Gossip Girl," its upcoming TV series for the CW.

From: Brenda Connolly Agreed. Congrats to the filmmaker, but I won't be watching it. Now that's just silly. It's wonderfully well written and produced and well worth the time. Didn't we all come here from real life or did I miss something?

I saw this on the web a while ago, it's actually pretty cool and very well made. So congrats to the makers i guess.

Even though I never wanted to be in SL and mix it with my RL, anything like this is good for thse of us with businesses here, I feel like. The more people that see a good side to SL, the more people will sign up. I just hope it boasting things in SL besided camping and free sex. It should give SL a good light if they focus on the right things.

From: Brenda Connolly Agreed. Congrats to the filmmaker, but I won't be watching it. I watched part of it yesterday, and found it to be quite an intriguing piece. Similar to something I've been involved with, too. Mari

Why NOT watch it? Thank God something GOOD is coming to the public eye from SL. It's not porn, it's not gambling, it's just a little movie. Heck yeah I'll watch it!

That has cameras in people's living rooms, home offices, and basements - filming them as they go about their Second Lives, In-world and out.

there's a famous one called red vs blue or something like htat. It seems like it was made in something like Halo if I recall well and they have become decently famous with their little machinima things. My husband watches them.

Well no - if you recorded what goes on in SL and made a "movie" or a clip of it - then its machinima

It will be a momentous day when an SL film wins an Academy Award.
