I've been in SL for two weeks now, and love it! I spent most of my time shopping and fixing up my avatar. I also took a few NCI classes. Yesterday I started to read the forums. I still need some help!

I would like to find some nice places to hangout and socialize. I've discovered that going back to Help Island and the Ahern Welcome area are not good ideas once you have an attractive av! I must admit to teleporting out of two uncomfortable situations after following "nice guys" to another location. Even the ladies changing room at NCI Kuula caught me with a "lady" offering me a free animation. So now I know that there is a class of citizen who hangs out trolling for newbies like me! Live and learn. Part of the fun of SL.

So...any suggestions for someone who wants to stop being a newbie and meet interesting people from around the globe?

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

hehe well probably to narrow it down you might like to say what things you like to do cause there is a hangout or 30 for just about anything you can think of :)

you can try typing in hangout in the search engine as well.

I dont do a lot of hanging out i'm kind of a recluse and sight seer mostly. (translates to i use sl as an artistic outlet and then once and awhile i go shopping or just look at new builds using the search engine)

The Shelter is one of the best places to hang out and meet friendly new people. And great music too :)

I would try looking at the events search. A lot of gatherings are event driven and much of the interesting happenings are not 'happening' all the time. While you are at such events you can certainly check people out and try talking to them. Discussing the event itself is a wonderful way to begin the conversation.

Yes Lori, those small one-sim InfoHubs were never intended to be used as gathering areas. But griefer groups don't need invitations to prey on noobs in the InfoHubs. Linden Lab defines InfoHubs as:

"These spaces, called Infohubs in Second Life, are distributed throughout the mainland grid. Because these spaces vary in size from very small plots of land to larger ones, we are considering two types of builds. The smaller of these would function as an information center for centralized distribution of Linden Lab news and announcements as well as resident content. The larger type of space would be used as a public gathering space for meetings, events, or general socializing."

Mainland sims usually only hold no more than 45 avatars at one time - so the tier paying land owners in mainland infoHubs get the shaft from Linden Lab when they do not enforce their own definition of the Linden Land in the sim.

Hi Lori,

I'm a two weeker too! (actually maybe it's just a week??) either way I understand where you're coming from!

This Forum and the wise words that these good people bestow on you is your best bet.

So far I have found a nice friendly crowd at The Blarney Stone (just type that in places under 'search' and off you go) also Taffs Bar (I search under Cymru in places and off you go) also there's the Forum Hangout at Allana but so far its been deserted every time I've gone but I think I've just been unlucky.

If you're bored and I'm online, I'm always happy to sit on a barstool with you and exchange noob experiences and discuss random topics.

Sandy (I'm a bloke by the way and I must get a picture on my profile! - perhaps a helpful experienced person could help me with that?)

Hi Lori and welcome!

To add to the above tips...... many live music events are also fun for socialising, although it does depend on the venue and the host (if any). First couple that spring are mind The Hummingbird Cafe and the Pond. The Pond is a fun social place anyway.

Also (shameless plug for a place I have not particular stake in), there's a beach in my profile picks that's very friendly and welcoming and a nice place to explore, chill, chat and have a laugh.

Just adding: the busy-ness of a lot of places can be very timezone dependent, so if a place looks like it could be your thing but is relatively quiet, just check back at different times.

Feel free to contact me inworld if you need any help :)

/me waves at Sandy : give me a shout, I'll do you a profile pic :)

Very important point. If someone refers you to a club and it's completely empty when you check it out a few times, don't be disheartened. Many clubs, may appear deserted all the time but will have a huge crowd if you show up during an event.

I popped over to the Forum Cartel Hangout yesterday for a brief visit, only other person there was Sandy, who was also popping by a look.

It is however a nice area, if only we could view the forums more easily from inside the SL web-browser, then I could just waste time reading the forums AT the cartel hang-out.

Excellent idea Haravikk! I looked in at the hangout last night .. deserted so went to Taff's. No Sandy and in about 2 minutes, 300 hoots I pushed off back to the hangout. 20 minutes later, got bored with shuffling my inventory so went and played with my alt.

LOL. Not what you think, obviously:)

An alt is another avatar. The thing you keep trying to play with is your friend's appendage, no?

ha ha I knew that really, it was just an irresistable opportunity for a cheap gag about appendages (regular readers will have spotted that I'm getting obsessed).

However, I hadn't really picked up on the whole Alternative Avatar thing until last night. Do most people have them?

(I've gone off at a tangent again)

/me waves at Sandy!

Not everyone has an alt. Some people create them to express other sides of their personality.

Some people create them to run away from people, because too many people know their main alt and it's gotten to stressful for them to be the main alt. They need a little piece an quiet!

Some people just like to have a lot of names.

Lots of reasons.

For me, it started out that I wanted to be a furry, and I wanted a specific name, which could not be Elora. It was a name I had already used on other boards, for many years, which expressed the furry nature and had a deep connection to me for specific reasons. However, that evolved for other reasons. So now, she's just a completely different person.

I love tangents. A lot of people have alts, for any number of reasons; sometimes just to work in peace. Others go for opposite sex alts to see what it's like.

I suspect I may be an alt, I'm just not sure whose:)

Have you checked that with Brenda

Yeah lots of people have alts. Adding to the above examples... people who run businesses for instance may have alts to get a little peace and quiet time in, or test their products.

I pledge 500L$ to Children In Need that by the time the Taff's event closes at 7.00pm PST, Sandy becomes addicted!

IM me Sandy and I'll tell you why I got 4 avies. Won't do it here again ;)

Lori, I don't think anyone's suggested yet, that you pick a keyword, any keyword for something you like, music, hobby, whatever and enter that in Search. Usually good for a few suggestions :)
