Just like open mic in real life, you will find a healthy mix of quality and disaster--I guess it's all subjective though.

I don't think musical talent is dropping--perhaps more people are realizing how easy it is to stream their music, and hence we get a few more talented musicians, and a few more 'I think I cans.'

*shrugs*

I can. I just don't want to inflict it on anyone.

Hmmm

For the older people from the UK who have childhood horror memories of the band "Dollar" ... that wouldn't be enough L$ to pay for the trauma therapy ...

I think some people are being over critical of some of our SL musical performers here. Sure most of them are not ready for the big time, but then again we have so called big time performers who are not ready for it either as they lip sync (badly I might add) in front of national TV audiences.

I would much rather be entertained (entertained being the key word) by some humble live SL musician than listen to some recording of some big shot RL musician with an ego out of this world who is only here to sell and does not give a damn about the community.

No ... live SL musicians are like the musicians we seen at the local clubs. They can be talented, then can be humble and most important they can entertain us. Isn't that why we go to see them? To be entertained? I support the live SL musicians. Do you?

as someone else said ... $0.50 is really only worth about L$130. :D

There are some great performers in SL and some not so great performers. Who says a performer has to pick only SL or Myspace to promote thier music? I would assume most working musicians in SL use both.

Well, if they ever bring Britney here, someone needs to get her some decent dance animations, first!

if you stream a previously recorded live concert into SL can you promote it as a live music event?

Not if you expect to have the respect of live music fans.

personally I'd rather listen to the sound of my own leg being sawn off,

Thank you SO much for that image...

/me looks nauseously at her western bacon cheeseburger oozing red BBQ sauce

Seriously, though, why does ONE artist showing up at ONE venue throw the entire musical culture of SL down the tubes? Gimme a break. And it's "losing."

That's us for sure, we've had a MySpace page for several years now. MySpace has been a great tool to get our music out to a lot of people, although it's gotten so massive that it's easy to get lost in the shuffle. If I was forced to choose between MySpace and SL, I would say that for us, at this point in time there's a bigger splash to be made in SL.

We actively promote our SL activities on MySpace with blog posts and show listings, and have met a few Second Lifers on there, but I don't know if anyone has made the leap in the other direction yet.

Well I guess, unless everyone on the planet unilateraly agrees on one type and style of music... the whole music industry must be an illusion?

Some artists seem a whole lot better live, others can't survive without the studio effects and are possible not better seen in person, in photo's or movies. For me, if the music and song creates the right emotions and atmosphere, thats good enough for me.. fo some others, it's more about the singer/band etc... Long Live Music in whatever form that apeals to the listener/onlooker. The world would be a very dull place without it.

Good point. I was sitting around at Galveston the other night listening to someone who was by no means the greatest singer in the world, but he certainly touched me with his music. I know a few musicians who haven't got the greatest voices, but can really put their music across in a beautiful way. I've also heard some people with great voices who didn't move me in the slightest. For me, a great gig is one that leaves me to TP home with a smile on my face. Which luckily happens quite a lot :)
