Hmm.

I don't see where it says "Experiment with ball gags and chains, while exploring new modes of sexual intercourse with your friends!"

I don't think SL has anything to worry about.

Yes, but is there any shagging there? If not, there's no need for SL to be afraid.

ETA:
Scylla beat me to it :)

From the FAQ - "How is Vivaty Different?" ...

From: someone
No crazy dudes dressed like bears asking you to go private in their spaceship

Well, that's no fun then!

ETA: We're all as bad as each other, obviously :D

Having a FB account for my avatar, I went and took a look. From what I gather it isn't a "World". It looks "space" oriented..you can go from one self contained space to another.

It looks pretty insipid to me, so I'm sure it is exactly what LL is aiming for.

I found it through a link on Hamlet Au's blog. This post ties in nicely with it.

Be VERY,VERY afraid.

I'm going to have a tin of oxtail soup with a few slices of bread, and then go bowling. After that I'm going to watch football.

I don't think so. I think you hide it well, but I pride myself on being able to read between the lines of lines that already between the lines. I'm probably the only one who noticed.

It's not the future of SL, but is something that should be able to pull in a mass market.
From a brief look, it appears to be a platform that allows people to set up a in space and pull in content from the leading 'social networking' services.
It would
1) integrate content from a variety of sources already familiar to the users.
2) do it in a 3D space that gives a sense of presence and personal space.
That's a good idea as it builds on pre-existing knowledge and experience of the users.

Most of the variable custom content would be streamed from existing services. That keeps a huge 'texture' and database server load away from the Vivaty servers and network.

I would guess that the process of the decoration of the space by end users would be very simple - as in Blue Mars. There, the user has sets of objects that can only go on a particular type of surface and can be positioned on that surface. It's a doddle.

It's probably like a WYSIWYG web page design, but doings it on a set of 'pages' that can be seen as organised in 3D.
That's going to be really easy for most consumers.

LL could approach that sort of consumer-friendliness via HTML-ON-A-PRIM, with library prims that automate the placing of social networking content on the face.

SL and Vivaty are for two completely different types of users.
They can be seen as competitors for eyeballs, but they are not competitors for activity types.

Ah, but it's what the dog can DO that is the important issue . . .

True, but I think that eyeballs are more important to the current regime at LL over activity types or anything else, for that matter. I can see them falling for the crap from the Zygo guy quoted in Hamlet's blog and saying "Yeah..THAT'S the way we want to go."

I watched the demo video. I didn't see any aspect of it that was as good as SL.

I read the discussion thread below the video and there just had to be someone pointing out that virtual worlds are not games but social networks!!!

Yes, I found that posting rather disturbing too. Just what the LL accountants ordered, eh?

Well, LL could set up sims full of a range of standard buildings - having specially scripted wall to display content from out-of-world.
That would allow them to try to compete for the same market that Vivaty will take.

However, if what the muppets and bean-counters want is for SL to be a Vivaty, then it's a case of "If you want to go there, I wouldn't start from here."

Is it free? Maybe I should try it. Maybe I'll meet the man of my dreams and we can . . . cuddle.

My unsolicited review:

--Terrible lag. Horrible. Makes Second Life's worst lag days look great.

--No real option for user created content.

--Unappealing textures and scenes.

--To add to the charm, after logging in, I found out that your real life name and location is completely disclosed on your profile in-game until you luckily happen to find the place to see it and change it.

--Most importantly, there was no hockey.
