Hello all

I was a resident of SL until the summer of 2007-2008 or so and then I left for personal reasons. I tried to come back, but couldnt really.
Anyway, recently I decided to come back to SL.I am in the process of installing the client and while doing that,I thought I would post here and check on what new things I need to catch up.

Anyone posting an update on this thread is appreciated

Thanks

All right then, I'll start us off.

If you're looking for the kinky stuff, try the Zindra sims. SL has been "sanitised" to make it safe for grown adults who get the vapours looking at nipples.

Also, there are more chickens about than this time last year. Bon appetit!

Hi Avguste! Are you looking to catch up on building, or scripting, or socializing, or RL work in SL (e.g. political activism), or ??? Help us narrow your question down a bit.

As for when you left, I'm having trouble remembering ... had the megaprim glitch happened yet, so that bunches of new megaprims were made?

Double prim mainland plots available in Bay City. So if your going premium that is your best investment. Welcome back.

Well,in real life I am a concert pianist and I am involved somewhat in the US politics, although I am waiting the 2012 presidential to get fully involved.
I would also be interested in earning money in SL

If you have the proper setup there could be some Second Life Art Galleries that would like a mini piano concert at their openings. And don't forget SL Weddings.

Concert Pianist ... hmmm. How are you on light classical requests :)

Live vocalists are very popular in SL, though I've never heard of anyone advertising classical vocals. I wonder if RL corporations throwing receptions etc. would, instead of a DJ or singer, enjoy having live classical piano?

Anyway, the sound tools etc. in SL are the same as they ever were, with the addition of SL Voice.

Other ways to make money ... building, scripting, etc.. The land business continues to be rather bad.

I would like attend a piano concerto in SL, I'm sure others would too. You can make upwards of 25K L$ plus tips for an hour long show once you're known in the concert circles.

Thanks for the comments.
Back in 2008, I did one live performance thanks to a few people who helped me,but I really dont know how to do it by myself.Like what I need and such.
Also, without being a live concert,I can for sure provide concerts by using my recordings and such. But still need to learn how to do that.

And obviously,I would love to make friends and socialize.Back in the day,I checked out the adult areas and to be honest, although I love adult fun, there is more to socializing than adult fun.
So I will for sure be looking for more socializing opportunities if any

I also checked in game and saw I still had a few guides on that.

Any other changes I should be aware of?

Welcome back.. I did the same.. left for a year sabbatical after getting too involved in SL.. now I'm just popping in to fly around and build and play on occasion. And although there are still some of the hotspots and sightseeing, most of what I remember has moved or changed. It is fun to go thru old lm's and see what's there now.

The biggest changes were the new "adult" content system (we are still in transition phase for that), the work they have done on the game engine, and changes to ad-farm rules and traffic bot rules..

Adult content is a new level. There was originally PG and Mature flagged areas. Now there is also Adult. Sexual activity or graphic violence get labeled Adult now. They made a new mainland continent and all the original mainland was/is being purged of Adult content. Private estates may flag their sims as any of the three settings, PG, Mature, Adult. Mass migration to Zindra (the new adult mainland) left large amounts of old mainland vacant and land prices have fallen through the floor.

Ad-farms were being used to extort areas buy charging extremely high prices for 16X16 squares to get rid of horrible and offensive builds. These were eliminated for the most part but a few can still be found.

Traffic bots were declared as against the rules for gaming traffic, but the crack downs have been universally against people running camp chairs. Many hurt feelings, newbies loosing a way to make the first few lindens and the hard core bot users are still in business.

Finally, new physics engine. Updated scripting engine. The ability to limit script time by parcel (sort of like prims are done) is added but I do not know if it is on yet. Shadows in alpha testing. Avatar alpha layer in the works and possible additional clothing layers. Also, the ability to upload avatar meshes are in the works.

So ... some crap decisions some needed changes with crap implementation and the promise of some really cool stuff coming. SL as usual.

Welcome back!

If you want some assistance setting up for a concert and a good venue to play in, plus a substantial audience, I can help. We do that stuff in Caledon all the time!

Just drop a notecard to me inworld and I can give you some names to hook up with, and if I'm not bombarded with land business at the time I can show you the venue too.

Prowess Rayna gives live concerts of her own music and that of others. I'm sure there are other piano composers/performers out there too.

Also new is, that the slogan "Your World - Your Imagination" is gone.

The new slogans are (even while unwritten/invisible):

"In brands we trust"

"In traffic we trust"

"In censorship we trust"

"In FIC we trust"

"In our own blabla we trust"

"In the incompetence of our customers we trust"

So, there is a new biz theology and brave new world evangelism in game.

Ah, and we have a new CEO. Mr. Mark Kingdon. ("In voice we trust";) He explained on the last SLCC (Community Convention) that Second Life 1.0 is over (OVER) and exactly in this moment Second Life 2.0 will start (messed up - as everything and anything).

https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2009/08/15/m-lindens-slcc-2009-keynote-presentation

This gives a feeling to older "residents" (vulgo: customers) to be slapt with a Facebook - so to speak.

Additional to that we have windlight and shadows (Shadows are great - they're working perfect on a Supercomputer like IBM's Roadrunner, Jugene, Cray, ASC Purple, Columbia, MareNostrum, SGI-Altix, BlueGene/L, Blue Gene Watson, Albert 2, etc. if you have such a machine at home or in your garden-facility).

Interesting,very interesting.

In the meantime,I think I found to make some money: chess, french and my recordings :)

I am going to have to sit down and get a business plan on going, but in the meantime, where could I go and teach french and chess?Preferably a quiet spot.

Since I cant use all the tools available in SL due to a old computer(my mic not working and such),I have been mostly thinking about what I would like to do in SL,how I would like to live my second life.
First I need to say that my original foray in SL was mostly for fun, meeting ladies and discovering the game.At the end of the day,SL is more than a game.It is a double life.I should have realized this before, but to be honest,I just realized it by watching a movie about SL on cinemax.
I saw so many things to do,so many places to visit,so many people to meet that it gave me things to think about as far as SL.
I was thinking about deleting my character and starting a new one,but at the end,I havent been an active resident long enough to warrant that or to have gathered any type of reputation. In addition, during my past tenure in SL I did began to work with my music. So I decided to keep my current avatar.
But what else did I decide to do in SL?

Well,I decide to live in SL as a full time resident, acknowledging and promoting my real life activities(music, games, politics), meeting people, working in SL as pianist, private teacher.
Live this virtual life to its fullest, meeting people, making friends, discovering new lands, dating and more.

So when do I plan on starting on this?Well, this post is the first step.
Then I want to wait till I get a new computer to be able to run everything appropriately.Hopefully this will be done by November/December,

In the meantime,I will be reading forums, connecting to the game and walking around, talking to people if and when possible. And basically getting re-used to SL.

Please feel free to comment on the above

Hmmm.

New things?

You can only do the naughty in public in a place called Zindra. You can still mate with barnyard animals at home in private as long as it is Mature and not PG land.

Sculpty prims might be new. Those are now used widely to make stuff with to lower the prim count.

Linden Lab bought On Rez and X Street, merged them into XStreet SL, and now you log in there with your SL avatar name and password.

There is talk about bringing in more teen/20 somethings, so a meld with dating and social sites is rumored too.

There is talk about bringing in more brand names, corporations etc. Universities are being wooed.

Copyright infringement is beginning to be looked at as a serious threat to the SL economy, perhaps because of a lawsuit.

What did you do back then that you are concerned about changes in, today?

Oops you just answered that. Sorry. You wanted comments about it? There is a lot of live music in SL still.

well, I just got my new computer and now I need to work on a business plan for teaching french and chess.
As I am working on the business plan, I need to figure two things:

1. a quiet spot to teach chess and french.

2. how much I should charge for 1 hour. I am thinking about charging 5200 Linden for 1 hour.

Comments?

In my experience, the going rate for private sessions in SL is much lower. As a general rule, most people do not want to pay RL prices for services in SL. 5200$L/US$20 an hour is way above RL minimum wage, and more than many SL residents earn in RL.

That said, it's worth a try... if you can command that price, more power to you!
