Sandbox trolls

Just wanted to shout a little away from me.

I was, as usual, in Sandbox Island, creating a new building.
Suddenly there is this newbie avatar, just an alt I suppose, dropping an item next to where I build, and it sends out thousands of particles with nasty pictures on them, and shout text compromising the entire region with racist spam about 20 times a second, filling the chat on the entire screen.

The objects also cling onto you and push you around the land.

The owner can be reported, but it's just someone's troll account. Linden Labs can't do anything about these losers at life.

But seriously, Isn't there any way to save my work while I'm being thrown around the map, away from my unsaved building?

So here is my message to anyone creating and placing these things, which are obviously designed to annoy the shit out of the planet...

Die, get a terminal disease, but do it quietly.

You can turn off particles so you don't see the images, that will help you to concentrate on saving your work. I'll have to be back inworld to remember which menu it's on, but can tell you this evening.

They can. but they won't. Anonymous accounts are here to stay, I'm afraid. :(

view > beacons > hide particles

you can also try muting the object and avi to give you some time to save your build and to AR them.

I don't spend much time in sandboxes, but here's how I handled a similar situation.

I was testing a plane and flew into the field of a shouting object. So I flew out of it, put my plane away, walked back into it and put down a marker. Flew through the field to find the other edge and put down another marker. Then I flew to the other two sides and did the same thing. Dividing the distance between my two sets of markers got me to within a few meters of the object. I systematically muted everything around me until the shouting stopped then put up a large pointing sign that said "Mute this!"

It was gone in seconds.

Granted, there were probably other ways the search could have been done, But my method worked inside of 5 minutes or so. And, by sitting on a prim, and turning off particles, most attacks are easy enough to sit through.

All that being said however, I agree with you that pests like that deserve to have their alt accounts tracked down and IP address blocked.

One of the first things I made, upon advice of others is a building seat.

Mine is an old barrel. With a "Do Not Disturb" sign nailed to it.

So while building I sit on it. No getting pushed around.

And then turn particles off if I have to.

Finally mute and AR. :)

If I'm doing anything important in a sandbox I put a sky platform up above 2000 metres. I've never been troubled at that height.

One ploy I use when I do see trouble on the ground is to identify the griefer and announce what they're doing in block capitals in 'shout' mode.

That might not worry the serious griefer but it does work for the silly newbie trying to look clever type.

Or.. if you have a mystitool, rez the non-physical vehicle.

And this would be the reason I finally stopped using the sandboxes. I began to spend more time filing AR than I did building.

I stick with sandboxes that have on-duty security and land officers. NCI sandboxes are great for that, and if there's no LO around, you can still use NCI group chat to ask for one. (^_^)

Other than that... When building, find a seat (or make one). Your avatar doesn't have to be in the build you're creating... Just close enough withing the bounds of your draw/select distance to handle the prims. A prim-seated avatar can't be moved. (^_^)y

doesn't move lock stop you from being bounced around too?
i never get carried away..in fact i most times walk up and find them and try to disrupt it if i can..it's the tiny transparent ones that are the pain to find.

but ya i think move lock will stop you from getting bounced around.. ;)

For all their problems, I still like to go to public sandboxes. Sometimes you'll happen across something other than the dump of freebie items and discarded product casings.

In particular, I like to go to Goguen-Cordova public sandboxes. In addition to their close proximity to the usually empty vehicle sims, they also have a no-script sandbox sim connected to them.

So if you find yourself being swarmed by follower objects, stroll on over to the no-script area. As soon as the grifer objects hit the border, they are shut off and stuck.

It's strangely satisfying to do that. :)

I usually build up high but sometimes I build on the ground. I usually go to CNWL sandbox, have never had a griefer problem there...but usually when I am building on the ground a rez a cube and sit on it. The barrel is a great idea, I'm going to make one of those lol

edit: if you don't mind, of course :)

Every once in a while, just for fun, I'll leave my workshops and build in the sandboxes. Like another here, one of the first things I do is take a seat. That disables most of the badness. From there, most problems can be handled. Jes know that there's always gonna be someone out there with no life trying to disrupt stuff, an go about your business regardless.

has anyone ever felt like you would be blamed for all the mario's and other things that float around??
i'll sometimes try to get in close to see who the creator is .then this voice in the back of my mind says..Ceka what if someone new to SL thinks it's you and you get AR'd..
so i have backed out a couple times when i get that strange feeling lol

it's just too easy to be AR'd these days.

Buy/rent your own land or join a Private Sandbox group.
Land is dirt cheap shuld be plenty of Landlords willing to rent you a few hundred prims on a platform in the sky even only for a few weeks.

I stopped in at Cordova tonight and my screen was filled with triangles in two shades of blue.

I concluded it was a pattern formed by many (dozens, hundreds, thousands, who knows?) of overlapping megaprim pyramids.

Hiding particles and sitting down would not help a bit.

I just stopped in to see what the troublemakers were up to. It wasn't repulsive like the usual particle explosions of a guy taking a dump.

The megaprim overdose also existed in Goguen.

I have just discovered a vital use for sandboxes. When I'm building on my own land I can't rely on *Select only my objects and then surround my unlinked builds with a selection box to save back up copies in my inventory as work progresses. I can't figure out how not to select part of the building platform I'm on without a lot of time consuming shift clicking.

So I guess it's back to the sandboxes for me. I don't have much trouble with griefers -- it's the people standing around appearing to watch me agonize over every prim in my amateurish way that distracts me. I mean, don't you have some paint drying somehwere you could watch? (Maybe I need to wear a newbie avatar when building.)

unless you select each prim or link sets and then take them in.but that can be a pain with alot of prims too hehehe

I used to. We used to have a thriving sandbox builder community going, but then some childish griefers decided to take over. And no, this started happening long before 06/06/06. I have my workshop, but sometimes I would like to go elsewhere to build dress skirts.

I remember when newer users would ask me how I did something. I'd gladly explain it to them as they attempted it.

besides sitting down, its also a good idea to go high up in the air.
i ussualy made a 10x10 platform, put a cube on it, link it, take a seat and went up 6/700m, now-a-days you can go upto 4000m, almost ensuring "quite time" ;)

ya i'm sure it used to be really nice..i know i had a few that i used to just go and watch people before i ever learned how to build and i could sit there for hours just watching..
but now it seems if i can't find one way on the back pages where you end up being alone there isn't much to choose from..

i think the last 3 out of 5 times i have went to the bigger sandboxes..i couldn't have been there 5 minutes before someone set something off..

i used to love to go the the ones the lindens had when they were doing the building classes..i would try to make things but get frustrated and just watch everyone else. lol

I can't tell you the number of times I've deleted my floor or linked something to a floor by mistake when building on your own land so it is nice to build in a sandbox. I do lock things like floors and such now so that I at least get a warning if I try to link or delete something I really don't want to

Easy answer. Make and alt and have your alt rez the building platform. Or, just invite a friend to build your platform.
