Are Linden's reading these threads? If so, can they (or anyone) remove some of the effing sky junk that is making a b*****y mess of this so-called educational and world wide intellectual computer virtuality? In Chaska and Mimas alone there are cages and Cessnas and whips and abandoned buildings and all manner of detritus. The skies look like a shipwreck.
Okay, please dont start a "Jig You BITCH" thread" but please let's start to get some of this crap off the bloody sl site and maybe there will be less lag and less aggravation.
I dont give a monkey's toss about what you think of my threads - let's just make this thing work. And please, please remove anything you left at someone's property. I just removed someone's hud for a penis from my land. Gross! eeeeeuuuu! Let's clean up SL for the birthday.

I would urge all parcel owners to turn on auto return as well. Many times I've been thrown from a ship , sometimes frozen and have to relog. I always try to go back and retrieve my aircraft, but sometimes I just don't find it. I usually send the parcel owner a nore explaining and apologizing.

Hey Jig :) /me waves- just wanted to say I didn't think you were a bitch - other than that I second the auto return thing. It is horrible to find the discards left behind- It is almost as a huge a blight as the ads.

If it's on someone elses property and not on linden land you just have to live with. Not everyone's idea of pretty is like yours........who's going to be the judge and deem it ugly? You? LL? Your friends or nieghbors? What if someone hates your build at 700 meters and wants it taken down?

Whole-heartedly agree with the auto-return. It's really pretty much the only thing one needs to set.

Sometimes, when I remember, I set my car to temp-rezzed before I take off on a drive, which prevents the car from getting stranded somewhere without auto-return, but it does mean that if I ever get out of the car, it will self-destruct, after which commences a hunt for build-enabled land with an object-entry-enabled path back to the road. I try to go back and find any non-temp-rez'd vehicles that don't get returned, but with sim crossings as they are, it's pretty hard to guess where the car may be just based on where one's avatar ended up.

I've wished--only half-jokingly--for occasional natural disasters to sweep through sims and clear all prims in their path, both sky and ground.

Incidentally, I've had more success than one would have any reason to expect, just IMing the owners of stranded sky prims--if I can catch them soon after they appear. I've had rather less luck IMing no-auto-return parcel owners, who tend to be long gone. When in a sim already full of sky junk, altitudes below 768 are pretty much a lost cause. Don't know how long it will take to junk-up the rest of the sky now that the build ceiling has lifted.

Btw, this isn't really about ugly builds, it's about stranded prims, at least for me. It's almost always that dopey Xcite cage just below the cloud layer, or a nondescript plywood prim escaped from the editor, or some trapped airborne vehicle.

It's the same old junk that you'd find on the ground where build has been turned on. The Lindens should put up a notice on their blog. 'Turn on autoreturn day' or something like that.

If you are complaining because you are seeing things from your skybox I recommend building above 768m. With the new ceiling you should be able to find an empty patch of sky AND you can log off and log on to the same spot.

As Desmond noted in another thread, there are 1.3 billion meters of land on the Grid right now. That's a lot of cleaning up to do without a mass auto return.

It's my understanding that the new ceiling hieght is only good with the RC. And, if you use the regular viewer and land on the skybox it will drop to 768. Unless it's been incorporated into the regular viewer somehow.......I doubt that though since we have not had a new viewer required update for the regular viewer in quite some time now.

You do need the rc viewer to build and move things around above 768. However you can still log in and out at above 768 with the current viewer. Apparently it was part of the server side update.

It doesn't always work, but a quick IM "hey, in case you were looking for your moss covered three handled family gradunza, it's at [slurl]" works a lot of the time. Some people don't care, others had no idea their stuff wouldn't automatically disappear or forgot where they were, and are happy to come get it.

I do not use auto return, however I am alway checking and cleaning up my land of unauthorized prims

(I hate renting somewhere and having to join a damn group first due to auto return or group only build, so for my little rentals I do not require ppl to join a group and no auto return, they can rent and put stuff out same moment without waiting to join a group)
I also dislike when trying to open a package on auto return land and just as I rez it the damn auto return gets me

so that is why I do not have it on my store land either

just as easy for me to just clean up, quick about land, check prim counts remove unwanted ones.

poof gone

if only more folks were actively keeping their land clean

(one thing I do is keep my draw distance at 64 avoid seeing a lot of the mess, and my store is at 900 meters)

The general thinking is to give residents as much control over their land as possible, hence, it falls on the land owner to keep their property clean. Much of the time, people operate on the ground, and just plain don't realize that they have prims, or have stray prims 'stuck' due to object entry or no entry barriers from cage guns and missiles and such. Lindens will not waste time running around deleting stray prims, just because it bugs you. The best you can do is keep your own land clean, and leave other people's land to themselves. If you wish, you could shoot the land owner a message informing them that some stray prims of theirs (or someone else's) is at such and such a location and altitude, but it will be up to the land owners themselves to clean up their parcels. What I'm wondering is why does a stray prim on land that is not your own bother you?

Most of the sky junk I see (not counting deliberate ads) appears to be above land owned by absentee residents who've left their land open build.

I think a lot of residents get embarrassed when they lose something on a SIM and I'm certain if I lost a prim penis it would be difficult to IM the owner of the land asking for it back.

Yes vehicles can be temp rezzed. It is how the group vehicles work (for the lack of a better term). And/or the scooters you see that say something like "rez to ride." You ride around on the scooters or surfboards, or cars, or planes, and then stand up. There might be some delay due mostly to SL acting up, but the vehicle will disappear after you get off of it. It is a setting in the prim. I can't remember which one it is (though it could very well be something like "temp"; for some reason the only setting I can recall is phantom, and it isn't phantom).

So the vehicle has to be modifiable, then? Never mind.

Autoreturn is good, but not everyone uses it.

It's not usually the object owner's fault...most of this stuff is just lost.

When I come across a piece of sky junk I send 2 IMs...one to the owner, one to the landowner.

heheh when I placed my art gallery at 600, there was some tacky building with a big spinning sign two parcels away. I moved the gallery down to 400 and there was some holy roller type bldg - always gotta be extremes in this place I guess.

Make sure the land is not group owned when using auto return. I deeded some of my land to my alt group and now everything is shown as belonging to others. That includes my skybox, coffee shop, furniture, landscaping….almost everything, and this will make it very difficult to sort out what’s not mine. :(
