From what I've read and seen you really can't travel the world in a vehcle. The void prevents flying to an island. You can't rez a vehicle on public roads. You could wear a vehicle but it really dosn't act like a vehicle at that point.
So are vehicles just toys to play with on private sims?

They look really cool parked outside the house. And fun to ride choppers under water.

Dunno, seems to be a pretty enormous geographical/social community revolving around sailboating: http://slsailing.com

There's nothing like making a slow majestic entrance at an outdoor event in a hovercraft.

Vehicles in SL are for what everything else is for in SL: enjoyment for those who like to make or use them, playing out a fantasy not realizable in RL, and bugging the hell out of people who want something to be annoyed about and have latched on to this category of SL item rather than some other.

There's a JIRA somewhere to get LL to make protected land build with a short auto-return.. Even if you can't build on linden land, you can usually find something nearby pretty quickly that has build on.

Some folks are afraid of flying. Aretha Franklin, for example.
Some folks are afraid of teleportation. Bones McCoy, for example.
Thus the need for roads in a virtual world.

On a lap around the old mainland I found quite a few empty plots and stores next to the road with build enabled, IM me if you want a list

What side of the road do you drive in in SL? I saw a right hand drive car for sale in a Japanese sim. I thought, wow that could be dangerous. Nothing in the community standards about road rules.

So there's no way to use vehicles as transport instead of teleport?

[commercial=on] I sell a bulldozer that actually does terraform land.[commercial=off]
Vehicles can be used for fun as well as transport, there are a number of go kart racing places as well as more up market racers and and racing tracks.
And I second whatever anyone else has said about sailing. There is a wide variety of boat types, most of which can take passengers and sailing areas covering huge areas of water.

I've built two cars - the Yosu and the Yosu Mk 2. I've sold a few and I think they look nice. They drive OK within the limitations of SL, but they often crash or bog down in solid tarmac on sim borders like all vehicles do. Second Life is all about imagination and creativity. OK, we don't need cars and I don't drive very often in SL, but the by the same argument we don't need buildings, water, dance clubs or whatever. Come to think of it, we avatars could just be spheres, coloured differently to make identification easier! But then SL would be so boring nobody would stay. As for which side of the road to drive on in SL - we all need the full width of the road and even then we go off the edge, so, when meeting oncoming traffic, the best advice is to go whichever side looks easiest at the time!

From: Screwtape Foulsbane So there's no way to use vehicles as transport instead of teleport? "The purpose of vehicles in SL" - is FUN! Vehicles are a great way to wander Linden Protected land and water. I've travelled extensively and seen weird and wonderful builds that I might never have come across in Search. The Linden road-related builds in the old continents can be wonderful. There are some beautiful bridges and cliff-edge roads. A lot of people just build for fun and creative exercise. They won't have keywords in land descriptions. They won't advertise or promote in any way. They only way to find the builds is by simply coming across them - accidentally. Travelling is a great way to increase the accident rate - so to speak In general, I've found that the best roadside builds are built in sympathy with the location. The best way to approach them and view them is from road level. One could do that travelling by flying, but a vehicle gives the process a completely different feel. It has to be experienced in order to understand it. Words don't do the job. (Just like most of life! ) A multi-seat vehicle with friends gives the best experience. It's way more fun than trying to fly in a group. The trick is to slow down at sim crossings. Prayer might also help. If the grid is laggy, sim-crossings can be dodgy. The newer continents seem more problem-free. Slow vehicles are best - unless you want to cross an empty water sim in a hurry. Corsica is particularly good for sim-crossings in my experience. I've done a huge water circuit of the central landmass, passing through over 50 sims in one continuous voyage. I've sailed from Corsica down into Nautilus. All over the place, there is a fantastic variety of builds. It's wonderful. - and yes, there are some awful places too I pity the poor creatures whose experience of SL builds is so drastically limited by Search and TP. Travelling in a vehicle of some kinds adds a certain something to the experience. It just feels more like travelling. --- Plus it's great fun when sitting in company. One person does the driving. That frees up a whole bunch of attention time. More can bee seen that way.

I have a friend who has a nice convertible and he's taken me to a lot of places that I've never seen before. Some quite beautiful and other than the lag caused by crossing sim lines we've encountered no other problems. There are some strange things up there in that sky also.

I use my bikes to move around at ground level at a faster speed than walking or running if I'm in a big area. Places like Scion city are perfect examples. The Blacklist too... I use my wearable bicycle for that Sim since you can't Rez objects on the ground. BTW that's a good idea for anybody who likes to zip around at ground level...just look up "hobo" on Slechange to get the free wearable, moddable hobo bike. No rez? No problem. Anyway...when I can't fly and there are rows and rows of stores to go through, I whip mine out in a flash. (That sounded unintentionally pornographic.)

all the positive replies have a point, but they're ignoring the impracticableness (whoah thats a word) of getting on your airship and sailing the sims, as I often have, without meeting an untimely end underground (as i often have, physics or otherwise). From what I've heard and I think, remember, vehicle aren't officially supported, which I think goes against the vehicle being actually fun and functional, to more of a novelty that needs to be hacked and worked around to get consistent behavior. Lot of fourth-wall breaking but I guess thats what you get when you build a world backwards.

There's an entire section in the Linden Scripting Language spec regarding vehicle physics and behaviors, so I don't think they are unofficially supported. Highly supported? Not really, or we'd be able to traverse sims at our leisure without driving/flying/sailing underground.
With all that said, I usually drive my quad cab pickup around my sim to pay my tier boxes, but it does have roadways. Occasionally, I'll get adventurous and drive around the neighboring sims.

Most of the millination of Caledon has paved roads and there are large stretches of open water. Admittedly, you'd want to be riding a horse, driving a carriage, or flying something old and/or blimpish, but it's generally a pretty low-lag area. I find that riding a penny farthing along the rail lines is quite enjoyable.
Mr. Desmond Shang, the owner, foresaw the value of public thoroughfares and built accordingly. There are several vehicle vendors, too. I make several ultralight flyers available for free near the telehub in Caledon Primverness.
On a good day/night, the Firth of Caledon (the inland sea you can find on the map) will have several boats on it and flyers above it. I've routinely flown from one end of the country to the other without getting ejected. Check with Mr. Edward Pearse to buy a copy of his "Flyer's Hazard Map of Caledon".
Good travelling!

I like to ride my motorcycle underwater! A) it is safer for all citizens of SL for me to ride underwater where I do. B) it is just plain fun.

I put on a pair of rollerskates last night and had a ball skating all over Orientation Island.
I tried to get the new residents interested, but didn't have many takers.
I was having a blast, and all around me I kept hearing things like "What do I do here? What's the point of this game? I'm bored..."

"you can't really travel..."
I don't know about that, just two days ago i took my tetra for a really long cruise from caddo to mowry, and then even further east to wethereal (/me tips his hat to verkin) and then even further... almost two hours of continuous sailing... the high-speed loop around introduction island under main and spinnaker was especially entertaining, all those newbies standing and staring...

For longest period I did really get the fun or adventure of vehicles or travel. Travel few times I have done its usually fun with friends but sometimes I still will login with alt and go exploring if I am in need new experiences then the usual. Recently I was given this wheel chair car and I had lot of fun zooming around the sim a friend and I share. And then I had friend take me on tour through privateer space a couple of times. That was very interesting.
