Read peoples Profiles as well.
Lots of people who don't mind helping will have that stated in their profile so just jump in and say Hi, might be better to have a question in mind such as "where do you think it's best to go, how do you do this" etc. If someone has an invite in their profile then they shouldn't reject you IM.
BUT also don't get offended if you don't get a reply or they seem to brush you off or anything like that because behind the AV might be a hooman answering the door, just about to log off etc. Gotta get used to that sort of thing.

Oh, one more piece of important advice before you start meeting too many people. Actually two pieces: 1. Make a very friendly profile. Don't say anything mean or off-putting or people will read too much into it. You don't need to be as over-the-top as my profile, but do make sure your profile -invites- people to talk to you. 2. Decide real quickly how much crossover you will let happen between SL/RL. Things can get very complicated here. Some people enter SL to be someone they are not or cannot be in RL. Some people enter SL to be who they wish they could be in RL, but issues in RL prevent them from being that person. Yet more people enter SL with their RL self. - It can get very complicated if you're the first or second of those, meeting someone who is the third. If they start to bond with you, and you start to pull back. Likewise if its reversed and you're carrying your RL emotions into SL with you. - I suggest putting this in your profile too. In the First life tab. When you're new, it might be best to have a very hard line divide. I am newish, so I may not be qualified to judge this. I'm not new to virtual worlds, but I am new to SL. But it just seems a good idea for emotional safety to be clear about it. From: Zan Beck BUT also don't get offended if you don't get a reply or they seem to brush you off or anything like that because behind the AV might be a hooman answering the door, just about to log off etc. Gotta get used to that sort of thing. - Definitely. Just last night I had to answer the door while cybering with somebody... that was frustrating on many levels... and she ended up thinking I was ignoring her... It ended kind of cold as a result. - Please keep in mind that all kinds of things can slow a response. Lag, RL distractions, computer or network crashes, misclicks, virus-scanner deciding NOW is THE TIME to both fullscan the HD AND update itself... (yes, that's gotten me many times), and so on... Heck, I've even had a mouse break on me right at a critical moment... My nephew that plays WoW was apparently in a "raid" in combat when a cat knocked his soda over onto his keyboard... Now -that- is a distraction...

Hobbies: Programming, roleplaying, hacking. Three things I've always wanted to try: global causality violation, immanantizing the eschaton, and surfing the technological singularity. Three things I know I don't like: opera, rap, and blues.

From: Argent Stonecutter I generally click *near* where I see the dots, so I can see what kind of place it is first. Safer that way. Nothing quite like blind-teleporting into the middle of a Dolcett barbecue to really add some excitement to your day!

From: Lance Corrimal that might actually take you into someone's home.
happened at our place the other day, some newb teleported right into our bedroom. had about 10 seconds before our psyke kicked her out.
i don't really advocate that idea. exactly how many people did you have in your bedroom!?

From: Argent Stonecutter Three things I know I don't like: opera, rap, and blues. My siblings have spent tortuous years trying to get me 'cultured' enough to understand Opera. I get it, I just don't like it. Rap - I would say I don't like it, but there is a very limited small sample that I have enjoyed. Maybe 1 or 2 artists. Blues - I'm coasting in neutral on that one.

From: Clarissa Lowell Absence of complaint is hardly a rousing endorsement or invitation. I can't believe people are encouraging blind teleports. This ^^ What would kind of be amusing is someone "green-dot-clicking" into a group of dots and find themselves in a Gorean sim. Any number of things could happen. *grins* Wouldn't be a great welcome for a new person though, depending on the sim.

They'll end up in the sim landing point and get notecarded to heck and beyond, and either go "OK, that's too weird for me" or "OMG I gotta get me some of this".

From: Void Singer easier still... open up the map, zoom in a little... click where you see lots of little green dots (just be wary of the the dots that looked stacked... often these aren't real people, but rather bots, created for various purposes, and they don't interact much.) DONT map hop because you may find you end up somewhere you would rather not be. When you do this you dont know what the place is so please use search so you also do not end up in private places

My partner hopped down from our home-in-the-sky about a year ago to pay the rent box and almost immediately a naked woman landed next to him and said "Hey, baby!" He ejected/banned her. He told me this lil event when he returned to the house. I was puzzling over how in the world a woman (naked at that, mind you) just "happened" to land in front of him. His story sounded a bit suspicious to me. He said that some people see green dots and click there to find other people. I still wasn't entirely convinced. Green-dot-jumping can be hazardous to partnerships (especially those where one is a redhead )

From: calantha McAndrews Hi I am very new to SL and so far I like it. I would like some advice on where to go to meet people. Most area I have been to so far are empty.I tried the search option in SL, but again most area are empty.Would anybody be so nice and help a new lassie Info hubs are not a great place - there you will meet people who are either new, or griefers, or are stuck in that vortex of "OMG where do I go what do I do" in SL still after a year or more. Pubs, clubs, bars... Shopping places... Forum Cartel hangout.

i don't really advocate that idea. I have had some very interesting evenings when some newb teleported into my bedroom. It doesnt happen as much as I would like.

Not all Gor sims have landing points set, I remember from my early days in SL. Lol
Imagine the newbie landing in a dolcett sim. Granted, a lot of this will be mitigated once Zindra's gates clang shut.

From: Argent Stonecutter ORLY? The only exception I've found was a mall, and it didn't follow Gorean rules in the mall itself. It may be different today - I don't know. When I first joined SL this (map click) is how people told me to get around. First place I landed was a dungeon. Luckily they were nice and actually gave me a folder of things for my av. Lol I had to ask them, "Why are those people talking like that?" though. SL has been an education. haha (Kudos to them for not laughing in my face.) (The dungeon wasn't Gor, that's just one example) The rest of the time I landed places that were empty, or had one person who ignored me. Floating around SL, and flying for ages alone, going nowhere, was a lonely feeling and it's one reason I quit at first. That, and lag, and not knowing anywhere to hang out but the info hub (where people also didn't talk to me or reply. Ha) Using search is so much better in my view, and also a skill all should learn at some point anyway.

I haven't ever found search terribly useful for finding anything I didn't already know I was looking for. I did try jumping around to interesting keywords, but ended up having to map-hop after I landed to find actual people anyway.
As for ending up inside a dungeon, that's why I hop to a spot half a sim away from the dots... so I can sneak up on them varmints. Green dots are tastier if they've been stalked first.

Hi calantha
Welcome to the Forums
Join the Forum Hangout. It was created by many people in these forums and it's a great place to meet people
I don't know of any clubs in SL that has events, dj's or singers's going 24 hours a day. Most events are usually 2 - 3 hours long. Then the club may close down for a bit and later has another event.
If you liked the look at some of the clubs you saw, go back and see if they offer a way to put you on their list.
Some of the clubs that you found empty may have a great show, or dancing etc. Just an hour later or so.

I'll add my standard refrain about the Forum Cartel Hangout in Allana - it too is not populated 24/7. But if you stick around for a while, someone is likely to turn up. Many people wear the Hangout HUD which tells them when someone is there, and will drop by if they see someone on the HUD. At the times when I am usually in world, say 6-9PM SLT, more often than not someone is at the Hangout. And if not, when one person arrives, more people quickly follow - thanks to that HUD. Just go relax there for a while and be patient.
