It's not the ugly avatars that irk me, it's people trying to force us to use irl instead of RL.

I think some people think that even if they want to be realistic, they have to be a cartoony version of reality. But it's not necessary to do that, there are lots realistic avs about - not necessarily beautiful, but realistic.
I think it's important to note that not every human AV wants to look maximally realistic. And to some of us, the really spooky freak shows are the avatars with the most photo-real skins, ideally-proportioned shapes, perfect hair, and photo-sourced clothes. And that's because all of that is overlaid on a *very* limited avatar mesh that at all but a few viewing angles puts the lie to even the most sophisticated techniques for trying to trick that surface into looking real. Apply even the best animations and the result is a disconcertingly distorted "reality" that would scare dogs and small children.

When it comes to realism, sometimes less is more.

I must laugh, because a lot of the people behind the good looking avs are great fat ugly people irl, maybe the ugly av is really a beautiful person irl.

I am one of the first ones

I am no beauty in RL, it is nice to have what I can't have in RL, within SL

I do not think it is a bad thing, it is fun, and boosts one's level of confidence

*shrug*

and on the other side of the coin, some of us prefer a realistic human look, and things like furries, tinies, and inhuman of any type, can be really spooky freak shows

I personally do not care what another avatar (or person for that matter) looks like, what counts is what are they like on the inside

Oh god, my secret is out, I am really just a washed up old hag in RL... how did you know?

Too much wisdom, grace and style. You are an elegant woman who does not fall for the fad of the moment. Your poise and charm are so far above the childish attention-mongers it becomes obvious that you are not a girl. You are a woman; a lady in every sense of the word.

You're beautiful, Rhaorth. It's just a little easier to see that here in SL.

I met an ugly av last night, in Amsterdam. He was a noob wearing "Boy Next Door", but he'd made his shape thick, and looked more like a longshoreman. Worse, he was ugly on the inside...trying to pick up an escort, but at the same time referring to them as "scum".

On the other hand, I also met the most wonderful person this weekend, at one of my classes. This guy was about two years old in SL. He had absolutely zero custom skin or hair...his entire av was created with only the Appearance sliders. He appeared as a charming older man, a little stocky, balding, with an avuncular white beard and bushy white eyebrows. With a bit of padding, he could play Santa Claus. Not only that, but he had a RL photo in his profile, and he'd managed to get his avatar looking quite a bit like his RL self. Best of all, he was beautiful on the inside. Within ten minutes, I was spilling my SL life story to him, and getting his in return.

So...there are beautiful avs, and there are ugly ones. Talking to someone for a few minutes will generally tell you which they are.

Not as nasty as a drop-dead gorgeous one with a distasteful spirit... I never fail to be amazed by how much social behaviour alters depending on the presentation one chooses. Of course what would be mega-cute is a kind of "PinocchioLife" in which people vote on the appearance of others. If you're an ass, watch out, you could end up with a tail (and so on and so on)

... yet his arms are the length of a 2 year old babys!
Short arms a very common and people are simply unaware of it. I noticed it while making animations and people's hands disappearing inside their bodies. I had a number of people stand up in RL, hang their arms by their sides and notice where on their thighs the end of their hands were. Then I had them look at where their av's hands end. The difference was enormous. The av hands ended at the top of their thighs. If we saw it in RL, would look decidely odd but, for some reason, it isn't noticed in SL - but it *is* wrong.

Some of the default avatars in the Library suffer from this. I thought I was putting myself on the rack, I had to stretch my alt's arms so much.

Even the people who saw how their arms were too short had difficulty lengthening them to a realistic length. They had to keep on doing it bit by bit, but they did have their RL arms to go by, so they got there in the end.

Thanks hon, was not fishing for compliments, however they are nice to hear/see.

(the following is real life info, if you do not like to see RL info about another person, skip by now)
(and I do not care who copies this, quotes it or whatever)
Me and only me is responsible for what I choose to put out on the web for the public to see (yes I am growing up, learning, and waking up I guess)

I know in RL I am definitely not beautiful on the outside, I am a very heavy woman, 44 yrs of age and showing it more each day.

I have had a long hard struggle trying to come to terms with being a plain jane, and SL lets me be more, on the outside, than I can in the real world (plus I can change on a whim hehe)

I got the sticker shock when I ended up in the hospital and they put me on the scale, 275 lbs, yes I am putting it publicly because I need to. (and I am only 5'2";)
Putting the way it physically looks aside, it is the health issues associated with it that are scary, and the way it makes one feel, both physically and emotionally, I need to get it under control and get healthy.

No one seems to believe I am that heavy, I guess I hide it well
however becoming ill was a wake up call that it is now time to grow up and take care of myself.

I have this blood disorder that can happen anytime, add to that the weight, and then high blood pressure, not a pretty picture.

No wonder I have been so dang stressed out these last few months (dr's are guessing my platelets have been slowly dropping over the last few months)

so...
tonight I join weightwatchers with my mother in law, and I will be doing updates on my blog so anyone who wishes to follow along can, and hopefully going public with it, will also help me stay motivated

It was amazing, when they put me on the scale, I was at the ER because of the bleeding and such, yet I wanted to just sit and cry when I saw my weight :(

(I do not have any full length mirrors, and wear all loose fitting clothing, so it was easy to even hide it from myself)

Rha as I see her:
Dark hair, dark eyes. No nonsense and plain spoken. While she wants to lay out her feelings and intention up front so there is no misunderstanding, she is also closed and guarded. Slow to trust. Violently loyal to those who make it through to her heart. Romance is over rated and serves no purpose; it's usually pretencious and impossible promises anyway. Small expressions of affection, on the other hand, mean alot. Show, don't tell.

Other than hair and eye color (and I could be way off on those), I don't "see" your looks in my mind's eye; nor do I care what you look like anyway. At one time I did. I grew up. I have learned to take things at face value. If I want someone to accept me for my avatar, I have to show them the same courtesy.

that was scary

not sure if you have looked at my RL tab or not
dark hair yep, dark eyes, not really
blue at times green at others, grey sometimes (not hazel)

as for the personality you described, yeah sure does sound like me

That was a sweet thing to say hon

The biggest reason I laid it all out here, now, at this time, is because I need to face it, and the first step in getting my weight under control is to actually face it, admit it, see it, do not fear it.

I like me, the personality that makes me who I am, even with my quirks (which for the most part seemed to be magnified 100 fold lately)

but. I do not like the physical me, and I can do something about that, and WILL do something about that.

It is time... 44 ain't old, but it ain't young either. I wanna live to become a step grandmother :)

it is funny you say this....

just before reading your post, I had a flower delivery

when I read the card, I cried...

it was from my sis in law and family, people whom have only met me a couple times... yet accepted me into their hearts and their families, and even though they could not be here (east coast, I am in Arizona) they showed they are thinking of me and sent me flowers

none of my own family have done that, and only 2 sent me any msgs in facebook to wish me well

sad yes

I have been away from my family far too long :(

I totally stood up and did the arm check! I think my avi's arm length is ok. Her hands are nearing the top of her thighs...but she has bent elbows due to the standing ao I use. I guess I figured the shape makers know what they're doing, but now I wonder...

And as many have said...its a fantasy world where many of us reflect the fantasy "us" we dream we were. For example...my avi has bigger knockers than I do, I can make her eyes any colour I wish, add tatts I wish I was brave enough to get (bonus - they can be changed depending on mood too), and change hair colour and style on a whim. She's also a lot hotter than I am, but her personality is 100% me. I don't have an online and offline personality.

Ugly is as ugly does after all...and there are a lot of gorgeous ugly people around.

I think it's important to note that not every human AV wants to look maximally realistic.
I agree, I like the diversity of avartars and I wouldn't want to force everyone to have super-realistic humanoid avatars.

My point was more about people who seem to strive to create a realistic look but fail because they feel they need to exaggerate features in a cartoony way. I know some people probably do that on purpose, but I guess others just think a tough guy needs maximum shoulders or an attractive female needs maximum boobs and minimum waist!

44 is still young, Rha. You have taken the most important step, to commit to weightwatchers, and you are doing it for health reasons, not vanity. You say you are resigned to being a 'plain jane'. Well I bet that is not what your husband sees, nor your step children. Beauty truly is within a person. A smile of joy and pride for a child who has done well at school, the radiance on the face of the woman who is loved for her kindness, her gentle arms and her enduring love and the glow you have when you look at your man and the children you share are the things that make you beautiful.

Mere physical perfection is all well and good, but what does it benefit a person who cannot behave with compassion and good sense? How stunning was poor Britney Spears at the height of her success, and yet her world has crumbled and she is separated from her children by so much foolishness? What would she give just to be a regular 'plain jane' with a loving husband and her boys beside her? How beautiful was Heath Ledger, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, the Princess of Wales, oh so many stunning lovely beautiful people, but who would trade with them?

We ordinary mortals might not have great bone structure and perfect features, but we can all be clean, well polished and lovely on the inside! I wish you great good fortune with weightwatchers Rha, and I'm sure you will see those grandchildren, who will surely grow up knowing Granny's big beautiful smile and warm comforting arms as two of the loveliest things on earth.

Well people in SL are super critical of looks.

In 03 & 04 i used to be told that i had too many pierces, that it was extreme an unattractive.

I have been told directly or indirectly on several occasions that my avatar was ugly - most recently 2 weeks ago.

In fact, someone that had not spoken to me since October 2003, IMd me just to say "do you still have those ugly chains on your face?".

To each their own - but i guess we have to deal with the criticism because of our choices.

I do however agree with some points made. Maximum: height, boobs, shoulders, muscle in general i find cartoonish, unrealistic, and to me unattractive.

The "unrealistic" part i know irks some people to hear but when you go through the effort to look realistic in ever aspect and then blow it by making your waist 0, boobs 100, buoyancy 0 - it looks weird.

But hey, I am Elf in SL and look real in all aspects but my ears....and no, i do not use no stinkin cheap prim ears.:p Linden ears rock - pierced old skool style.

I personally like your chains on your face and piercings not that it matters it reminds of this
singer whose name I forgot years ago in my 20's I had crush on.
I love my big pointy UV Elf ears. My avatar from 2003 and this one always has them.
I don't care if others think my avatar is ugly or strange. I am ugly by lot of standards these
days in my first life too.
I work very hard sometimes to be ugly or different looking intentionally.
I get to look whatever what I want too, I don't have to look like everyone else or look a certain way because someone has issues with it is their problem.
They can always find some Barbie or Ken looking avatar to look at, their tons of them in Sl.
