Why is this such a big deal in the first place.

It all sounds so rather uptight.

But then again, i do not mind being mapped.

Cos the OP doesn't want this person in their house, and they feel encroached upon since permission wasn't asked or given.

To answer some questions, I never gave her permission to see me on a map, at least not knowingly. The apartment is also a skybox...there are several above me. Having gotten to know her there is absolutely no way any malice was intended.

I talked with my landlady and she says that the subject is 1) a very nice person (which I knew) and 2) has been in SL for a long time and is a very long term tenant. Subject has no recollection of being evicted and is quite sorry if she caused me any stress, and we are all just fine now, if not a little confused! We may never know what happened! Oh, well, it was interesting at least :-)

Thanks to all for the counsel. Jackie

I would love to have her come visit me in my house, just not unannounced! :-)

Well, suppose I were "engaged" in my own house? And neighbors decided to drop in without knocking? :-(

But this is SL, not RL.

People can drop by whenever unless you turn off access to your land.

Well whatever...The problem is solved and that is good since it was annoying you.

It wasn't annoying me...I thought she was brand new and was in some kind of trouble...just wanted to make sure she was OK...sorry if I gave the wrong impression!

In general, should this kind of thing occur, one of the first pieces of advice I'd offer would be to hide the pet bunny, and the large pot.

Even if new to a game I'd know not to go into a building that looks like a house. But that's just me.

After 2 years, I'm still not sure what is and what isn't a house. I've seen stores/galleries/museums that look like neat houses, and houses that look like stores/shoes/coke bottles/etc.

I just had another conversation with my landlady (she is a Genuine Saint)...her detailed description of the culprit was something like "nice, been here a long time, never causes any trouble but is a bit ditzy". :-) That explains a lot! Boy, you get to meet a lot of interesting people in this place... J.

The question that that begs is "well why don't you add me to your list?" And just be honest: "I only allow a few people to come into my home when I am not there, and we are not good enough friends yet to make me feel comfortable doing that."

I agree with Cristalle until I caught my sl sister and her friend "engaging" in my home. So I have hardly anyone on my white list. It was funny when I saw their butts in the air then a gasp, omg there's Sable. LOL, I should've taken a picture of them.

/me wonders why people apply rl attitudes to virtual property situations with tp capabilities.

I wonder if your new "friend" is playing orb games. I used to do this sometimes. The only reason I stopped was I got more involved with making clothes which is more interesting.

There are several fun games to play with security devices.

1) In the old days and with older orbs, there's the butt sit. The orb gives you thirty seconds to leave (or any other time frame.) You sit down. The orb goes quiet. You get up again. This resets the clock. You move closer to the house or wherever you want to go. You sit down again. This resets the orb. The object is to reach the landowner's front porch, and then either touch it or else take a photo of yourself as a trophy.

2) These days the butt sit has morphed into run like the infernal regions. One can no longer foil the newer orbs by sitting down, so one runs or flies to the trophy point and then either just touches it or gets a picture of oneself standing there before being ejected.

3) A variant of run like the infernal regions is the chute swoop. You need a parachute for this and a flight feather/flight collar. You get up high over the orb owner's property and then drop down and sail through. Usually you can sail to safety before the orb gets you or at least that's the object of a 'chute swoop. Sometimes you can also take a trophy picture of yourself swooping.

Ban lines have their own fun and games.

1) Climb them. This takes patience but they are climbable.

2) Bounce on them. This game is not my invention. I heard about it here on the forum. Climb or fly down to the top of the ban lines. Then fly up and let yourself drop on to the ban lines. The ban lines over property act as a trampoline and yes you can take trophy photos of yourself bouncing away.

Note: When I played these games or if I played them again, I always felt that I was not hurting a real human being. I was simply making trouble for a stupid machine. The orb is a machine. Trying to outrun, outtrick, outwit it doesn't hurt any body.

One avie's security software is another avie's attractive nuscience.

And, the visual effect of the white particle cloud going up and down is entertaining :-) I can say for certain that this was not a game, though!

What you said earlier, about not 'knowingly' giving permission to find you on the map, you know how to check that, right? On your friend's list, the middle 'checkbox'? (Friend can find you on the map'.

I agree with you about privacy in SL, but many don't. I feel if I am paying for a space, rl, sl, whatever, then I ought to have some rights over it, but in strict reality, it's not true. People can cam into your space, they can 'sit' through your walls, you can be engaged and look up to find you have additional company you weren't expecting. It will happen sooner or later, so don't be outraged. Some just figure it's SL and they have 'rights' to be anywhere even if YOU are paying for it.

I used to bounce on them. And I did the other day when I found myself suddenly up on top after an odd set of circumstances. So I just went with the bouncing.

Just a thought .... your security orbs arn't by any chance set to push and bounced the poor girl up and then back down again between each other repeatedly when she logged in?

I'm going to chime in here, even though this thread is already a few pages long and I haven't read ALL the comments.

A lot of newer folks don't get the idea that there are communities within SL. They see the whole place as a gigantic sandbox where they can go whereever they want and do whatever they want. Hence a lot of folks turning greifer when they find access to free weapons.

Once you've been in SL for a while you begin to take material possesion over stuff like your house, furniture, or land...even though all of the items are virtual. A lot of new folks just don't get this. They don't realize that walking on your rented property without annoucing themselves may bug people.

Unfortunately, most seasoned SL folks tend to treat these newer folks poorly and make a bad image for everyone in SL. I've done my share of exploring random areas and run into MANY folks who pulled the whole "pull out shotgun, 'get offa mah property'" routine.

It's sad, really.

But yeah, newer folks just don't GET the etiquitte system in SL. I usually try my best to help teach ones I meet.

Nope. This happened at my rental apartment which has a security system provided by the landlady. My orb(s) are in my skyboxes some distance away. Nice thought, though. Jackie

Which is why my first reaction was to find out if she was alright and not stuck somewhere due to a problem. In one of my earlier posts you'll see that my landlady talked with the perp and nobody has any idea as to what happened. She was unaware even that it was happening to her. The important thing is that it ended well. In fact, the poor person involved is the one who is starting a user community among the tenants of the place I rent, and not some miscreant. Looking forward to meeting my co-tenants. Jackie
